I saw Jon posted this on his Instagram and it was interesting to see how triggered people were in the comments section, outraged that an abuser was being given a platform. I highly doubt these people watched the interview. Personally, as a woman who experienced physical and emotional abuse at the hands of a man I found this conversation healing, and I’m incredibly grateful you shared this. THIS is masculinity, THIS is how we heal masculinity. When men are given safe spaces to be radically authentic, raw and vulnerable they heal, and we all heal. I don’t wish for the demise of the man who abused me, I wish for his redemption, I wish for him to heal, so that he can be a better man and treat women with the love and respect that they deserve. Can’t wait to see more open and raw conversations likes these.

His deliberate effort to refer back to what he Shio says earlier in the conversation is a way to demonstrate his listening. It's when you are going through this change that you can really appreciate the living for the here and now. The one day at a time. What will come will come. And to have trust in Him, Shia will never be alone and will forever be loved. Not that my comment or feelings matter, but I am happy for him, continue to have peace 🙏🏻❤

I am at a complete loss for words. This interview was so incredibly moving. As a woman, not once - not ONCE - have I thought about the lack of societal support and resources men have when they’re in search of any type of rehabilitation, whether it’s drugs, alcohol, anger management, emotional/physical abuse, etc. Listening to this raw, untethered interview brought me to tears so many times because I am quick to judge men like Shia. I am quick to point fingers and write them off completely. But all people deserve second chances. Men like Shia deserve the opportunity to get to the root cause of their issues and do everything in their power to make amends. Shia - if you’re reading this, I want to thank you for sharing your truth with the world. It was the most profound interview I have ever listened to. To Jon - I am so grateful that you chose to give Shia this opportunity and be a true friend. You did not just talk the talk - you walked the walk. The world needs more people like you.

Yes! Thank you for pointing this out because that’s so profoundly important to realize. The problems men face are valid & resources need to be there so they’ll have the tools to gain an understanding on the root cause & gain the self awareness to change. I watched this documentary about people who facilitate the rehabilitation of domestic violence offenders & the utter vitriol & hate they get is shocking. People want to just write these offenders off. Almost wanting to euthanise them. I understand that it’s difficult to separate the sin from the sinner but there should be room to actually offer support to those who want to change. The most influential of people are usually the ones that were the biggest sinners. The most inspiring to those that struggle are the ones who also struggled but came out victorious. Imagine if we just wrote everyone of them off & subsequently also writing off the lives they were able to save when they did change.

Want to see a truly broken man? Talk to the guy at the bar, who sits alone staring at his drink which he pounds back to back every night. Waiting for some stranger to say something so he can get his pictures out of his kids who he no longer see's because his wife left him, took the kids, took half of everything he had, takes half his paycheck now. The only purpose the man ever had is now gone. Taken from him. And people don't think about that, they only think about the woman.

This isn't just a Shia thing. This is a whole generation and then some of broken people. The ego, the self-centeredness, putting career and craft above all, finding validation in shallow pursuits, lack of delayed gratification, victim mentality, nihilism. The list goes on. It's a cultural thing. It's systemic. It's engineered and applauded. These are the ideas and behaviors that have been sold to us as "progress" and "empowering" when in reality they are LITERALLY the opposite of those things, and lead you down the opposite path that you intended to go down. There are no mistakes or coincidences. When so many people are led down this path there is an intention behind it. You've been sold a shit playbook for life. Realizing that, and the roots of how and why that happens should be enough to make you want to change your habits. Tomorrow's a new day.

Interesting you guys see it that way. To me it came across totally different. From my perspective I saw what he also said to Shia: He loves him, he wants to help & support him and he did with having him on his show. To me, actions speak much louder than words or looks he might give. I could also sense that in his whole behavior while listening, he was totally empathic and felt with Shia. So now that you saw something he might have hid from Shia or some hate, is it maybe that deep in yourself, there is something feeling like this? So you believe to see it in someone else? Since this is only text and no voice, be aware I say this with the intention of support for you, since in my own experience I have many times seen & maybe disliked things in other people that actually where things in myself I needed to fix. So for this could be a hint for you where to look for further self-development. Where are all on our own way of development, but also we're in this together. I hope my intention comes across the way it was meant.

What’s even more inspiring is Shia was placed/given the literal modern American dream for men today of fame and money, and the insight and rawness, seeing his purpose and content in walking away from it and serving other people from literally the most humble position he could find (by all American standards). He’s been on that track for a while despite it all. He realized his mistakes and decided to fight his demons. I’ve always loved Shia and heard of all his problems but decided I’d stand behind him because he felt like a brother. A troubled brother. I identify with him a lot and man, I cried a lot during this whole interview. To see him coming out the other side as a good man, the same man I thought he was, is just beautiful.

Recently, I had a moment of clarity when speaking to my son. I was talking to him about some other guys picking on him at school. He's 8 years old and is softer than I was growing up. I love him for that. I looked him in the eye and I told him that men will test you because that's who we are. I told him in no uncertain terms that men in this society draw lines in the sand. But real men build Bridges. He looked at me with these big doughy eyes on the verge of tears, relieved. He thought I was going to tell him to hit the other boys or to never be pushed around. I told him to use his words and to ask questions. I told him not to worry about appearing tough or wanting to be stronger than the other boys. And in that moment I know that it was God speaking to me too. Knowing that I've come full circle as a man known for his strength. As a man now known for his welcoming smile. All love to these two guys!

Good job. Part of being a father is being a guide to a child, showing them a path to the adult they don't yet know they want to be. That little talk, it might save your kid so much time wondering and wandering to see if being who he is, is valid, is allowed for a man. Good on you for seeing him for who he is, and guiding him to find what strength will mean for him.

Thank you Jon and Shia.. Im in a dark place in life and I have not been the best man, the state i live in unfortunately doesn't look at mental health, or anger issues as a main issue, very limited facilities here to help young men as myself who actively want, and seeking help, thankfully I finally found somewhere but this, this gives me more hope for myself and the future generations who have issues not knowing where to take the extra energy, the ones who know what they are doing are wrong and want the help. We have to control our emotions fellas. Even when things are the hardest, and you want to cry, break a window, whatever the case.
