Karlstahl was one of the few survivors fighting when the legion first invaded, which is indicated by his dirty boots. He’s a broken idealist, seen what his nation and the people have become, and after years of being unable to change it, he’s accepted reality. I think the scene between them highlights how he’s always had her best interest in heart, otherwise how would she have gotten away with her ideal preaching back in cour 1? It was just that he was stuck between his duty and what he truly cared for. His ideology is vain, but he’s a realist too.
He was definitely covering for her all those years. I think here he realized his time was up, and he wanted to 'test' her to make sure she was gonna double down on her beliefs so he could let go of the reins. Essentially saying, you're a big girl now, I won't be there to protect you. She acknowledges this by calling him by his rank, and not 'uncle' because the girl who relies on his protection would've used the familial term, while a mature and professional officer would use the rank.
Shin was so eager to die that he didn't even blink an eye when the glass shattered (any normal person would've squinted at least at that moment), and his smile is literally the joy of anticipating his death this is just crazy..

Remember that Shin could hear the Legions? He would have heard the Legions is the Republic and thought that the Republic might have fallen (and Lena possibly dead)
Shin came very close to death today. In the episode at the 11 minute mark, Shin's Reiginlief takes a shot, which causes the shrapnel in the cockpit that cuts his cheek. Seems to have been machine gun fire. Anyway, after the fight when Frederica scolds him we see two things some 15 minutes into the episode (8:00 in this video) 1. The bullet that penetrated into Shin's cockpit hit exactly where the headless knight mark's head would have been (if it had a head)... a very obvious omen of death. 2. Shin's left breast pocket, where he keeps Rei's nametag is torn open.... yes the bullet hit Shin in the chest, and he didn't even notice! So some cool symbolism; the heart is offset to the left of the chest, so Shin keeping Rei's tag in his left breast pocket makes it a sort of external heart for Shin. But more importantly, Rei manages to save Shin from beyond the grave yet again. Regarding Lena, how much mental strain do you think it causes to synchronise with so many people?

Between seeing Lena lead the 86 into the most important battle yet of their lives, to seeing that flash of deathly light on Shin and the gang.....I have eatched all of 86 at least....13 times? Round about. Could be more, probably not less. I still am wrak to every single moment that the author, and the anime studio, want us to FEEL. Yeah. I'll feel Eighty Six every damn time.
He’s sweating because he has the ability to hear the voices of the Legion from far distances. Although he’s used to it, it grew a lot worse due to the amount of Legion that were heading in their way.
