Clutching in a ship's propellers viewed underwater from the safety of a go-pro. From an icebreaking ship located in the great lakes. Each propeller shaft is rated at 4,400 hp @200 rpm. Each propeller is 9.8 feet in diameter (3m).
Not a place you would want to be diving or swimming..

This may sound stupid but i don't know nothing about ships ... So here is my question ,Coulds someone tell me why the 2 propellers don't turn the same way ?? The right one turns clockwise and the left one turns counter clockwise ... Is there a reason for that ?? Thanks !!!
@markushicks3614
@markushicks3614 4 года назад
I know more about planes than I do ships but the same principle applies. 2 propellers don't turn the same way due to torque. This happens because the downward blade produces more thrust when turning. As a side note, if they were turning the same way, the ship's rudder would have to counteract for the torque. For example, if the ship's two propellers were spinning to the right, there would be a noticeable effect of the ship turning to the left. If the ship's two propellers were spinning to the left, there would be a noticeable effect of the ship turning to the right. The point is they use counter-rotating propellers (opposite turning propellers) to make life easier.

Ducted propeller such as these are the pinnacle of fear for submechaophobics The nightmare begins, as a strange force pushes you from the deck, were you fall from the ship and get sucked into doom. Your body will jamb between the prop tips and the shroud duct, The blades, as the swing around without mercy, will tear your body apart and your pieces will sink following the long anchor chain to the bottom of the ocean floor. Your brain, as it sinks into the abyss, will remain semi conscious, while your fading awareness will be filled with horror of what just happened, and the horrors yet to come, as deep sea creatures dissect you slowly, consuming your total being, forever Mean while, the rotating propellers move on without a care, waiting for the next victim to be divided up and sent plunging through the depths to the Ocean's bottomless world. For that is their true purpose. Pleasant dreams.

Beautyful how you described it! But do you know what´s even more beautyful than ship´s propellers? Transverse thrusters. Because imagine you are swimming in front of a huge 100m sized ship, thinking "aw these propellers are so far away nothing can harm me here!", und suddenly a loud sound of rushing water becomes audible and a huge vortex begins to form on the side of the boat because a whole array of transverse thrusters have kicked in for some maneuvering. And the captain is always looking on the other side of the ship, not the side you are swimming... :D
