ITS PAINFULL HER RANGE IS SO INCREDIBLE. it's wild rewatching hoe many times at the end of an episode Shirley has like,,, no resolution to what little arch she did get.
@@willkoestner4159 really did. I grew up with ladies like Shirley and like I feel like the show kinda only scratched the surface of all the hilarious potential of her character :( I think her and Annie had GREAT chemistry! more of them would've been dope. I think her and Jeff also had incredible chemistry, they served as both great foils and allies to each other. I mean this with so much respect to the other actos but I do feel like she was one of the more skilled performer while still being underused
@@victoriacisneros4662 Oh yeah, no shit! And no disrespect of course. I think Jillian Jacobs is a terribly underrated actor too(Convo for another day), but Y.N. Brown? She is at LEAST on par with Chevy in his prime. Always giving 110 and always keeping it tasteful. And with none of the spotlight on her, no less.
The fact that Shirley was the only one who could really "break" Jeff in an awkward or comedic moment was such a fun, unique spin on their relationship.
Some might disagree, but I think Shirley and Jeff had the best friendship in the group (excluding Troy and Abed of course). Both have confided in and supported the other in moments of need, and even when they butted heads over meowmeowbeenz it was because of their similarities rather than any genuine animosity.
@@aychbhomas6608 Jeff and Shirley had one of my favorite friendships honestly! They bond over experiences that go way back to when they played foosball against each other. I just like how they overall compliment each other's personality.
@@aychbhomas6608 I wish their friendship was explored more, but also I kinda wanted the two to end up together, it would be a good thing for Shirley and there were multiple times that I strongly disliked the love triangle story. With the number of moments where they seem to be attracted to each other (or at least that is how I interpreted them), I wonder if this was something that the writers considered, like how Pierce and Troy were supposed to be a duo before Abed and Troy
I loved how Troy and Abed were so in on the dead bird plan. Shirley was definitely the mom of the group and I think she helped the younger ones learn to grow up.
Shirley was an integral part of every single study group member's emotional evolution; Britta/bathroom trips, Annie/getting over Troy, Pierce/the pantsing debacle, Abed/ABED: The Movie, Jeff/supporting his jealous search for Britta's ex, Troy/being his literal protector as a double-wielding pillow fighter, Chang/assisting with her birth. The group would be nowhere near the same without her.
One thing I really like that makes Shirley an amazing character and Yvette a phenomenal actress is that she works really well with everyone in the group. One thing I love about this show is that the main group really fit together. The inner friendships built inside the group feel so organic and relatable, when they pair off it usually never fails. They truly feel like a misfit group of close friends
I was sad when Shirley left the show honestly. She was one of the funnest, funniest, and more relatable characters there. Imo, she should have stuck around till the end of the season. Would have loved to see her interactions with the newer cast members.
Both the character and the actress left to take care of her ill father, which is good, IMO. If a future movie ever gets made she would easily come back for it.
shirley's character is one of the best in the series imo - i view her kind of like abed, where they don't develop much emotionally throughout the show except in shirley's case it's because she's already the most mature of the group. i always remember that scene in digital estate planning where annie kills the blacksmith and shirley ties up the loose ends despite obviously disagreeing with the ethics - in the earlier seasons and in her past with andre & the stripper she's acted outside of her objective moral code but without the incentive of protecting a friend. i like to assume shirley is so devout in her faith because it helps her cope with her 'thinly-veiled rage issues', as abed puts it. we know she's been struggling with anger issues since she was a kid but it's not explicitly addressed since so often her outbursts are lulled into snide or passive-aggressive remarks often concealed beneath pious indignation. this probably helps ease her guilt since she can disguise her anger as righteousness but doesn't solve the problems this raises in social scenarios. her other study group kicked her out for being a gossip, and everyone shunned her at the end of app development when jeff ousted her for being manipulative - it becomes a problem with tone and unspoken tensions, which is most obvious when we see her interacting with abed or jeff. while i'd describe abed as a 'foil' to shirley, she and jeff are definitely far more emotionally compatible even if neither cares enough to bother with small talk. she's 'the only one who truly gets him', and while that seems like a one-off joke it's rings true far deeper than a lot of fans and even characters care to notice. they're roughly the same age, and i think that was written brilliantly since i'd argue they show identical levels of maturity. shirley's relationships with the individual group members aren't too distinct: troy, annie and abed are treated kind of like kids she has to babysit; britta is her younger sister/friend that shirley gets to teach about relationships and life while respecting her solid views and sometimes even learning from her; pierce is the co-worker who should have been fired years ago but she'll happily help if he asks. jeff, however, is her equal. they're both manipulative, so jeff can call her out without playing into her victim-complex and shirley can help ease his insecurities without having to psychoanalyse or pry. i really like that they knew each other as kids, especially considering she bullied him and neither recognised each other for years - it's interesting to me that shirley was aggressive by nature and improved herself over the years, whereas jeff was born quite passive and his environment pushed him into 'toughening up' over the years. i also just love the little moments like in digital estate planning where they both complain about the weight sensors - it's superficial, but it's cute.
there are two members of the study group inside you. one is a devout Christian with thinly-veiled rage issues. the other is a bit of a self-righteous wild card. both are telling you to love your friends deeply and a little insanely anyways, same
The great thing about shows like Community you can always come back and notice a character you didn’t really like much but see characteristics you can relate too or sympathize with. Shirley’s character had a chance to unravel and grow like all of them.
Yeah. I legit hated her my first run when the show was still new, but on the second and subsequent views I realized I only hated her because she reminded me of real people I know and that's legit a god damn feat of an actor: to make the audience think your character is a real person.
honestly shirley in the wedding episode was one of my favorites. firstly, she was absolutely stunning in it, secondly, she didn’t back down to someone she loved even though one of her main values was to be married and she probably felt shame from it (at least earlier in her development).
Honestly Shirley has her flaws, but what she did for Abed when she destroyed his movie was one of the most selfless things. She didn't mind getting all the hate to protect her friend even if she didnt agree with him.
Shirley is criminally underrated! YNB has such a talent for putting on that sweet voice that disguises her darkness. Some of my fave episodes are the episodes are the ones that explore Shirley’s backstory
Yvette is the best actor of the entire cast, it's a shame she didn't get much to work with. Shirley had so much potential to be a great character but she ended up to be one-note in places
Shirley was not my favorite character (that's reserved for Troy and Abed. Separate or together) but I can't deny she has some of the best one liners and attitudes. Pierce's will: Did you know that I was intimidated by you? Shirley: *with the confidence of a calm Helen from Drake and Josh* Yes
I feel like a motherly figure is so important in a friend group. I always end up as the mother of the group because I'm just naturally maternal and want to love and protect, so I love Shirley so much! Tho, i am aware that she's very manipulative, but it's something that they always talk about and yet they still choose to be friends with her. If it's not for Shirley, who will be the caring and loving one of the group.
One great moment you missed: Can you believe he called me Jackée like I'm some stereotype? He's lucky the good Lord wasn't watching otherwise I'd have slapped him upside the head.
7:20 I just realized Shirley calling Annie "Hannah Montana" which is probably a reference to Alison Brie's first acting role as a minor character in that show.
No joke, I literally only watched community because I saw Yvette Nicole Brown was in it. (Also Donald Glover, but to a lesser extent if I’m being honest.) imagine my sadness when I realize how much they underutilized her!
@@geekyvors2837 Tbf, season 4 did that to all the characters. The dean became highkey annoying for me, and I eventually grew to dislike him even in the seasons where I previously loved him in. Basically everyone lost 3 seasons worth of character development for a running gag throughout the next two.
The fact they have the BLUE Chemistry textbooks on cookie trays just like some other show about good people breaking bad is such attention to detail. That is why I love this show
I love Shirley and wish they'd done more with her character. She has such a strong personality and goes overboard and gets manipulative and controlling but they (mainly jeff) call her out on it. She is kind, smart and ambitious, not to mention she is one of the funniest characters. Her being overly religious can be irritating at times, because she tries to hold other people to her own standards, but I do think her unwavering faith is a testament to her confidence and passion and headstrong personality. The show could have done so much more with that, but I digress. She does show some growth in regards to her manipulative, passive-aggressive nature,, but there was was much more character development we should've gotten considering she was on the show for 4 seasons plus. Also, of course, Yvette Nicole Brown is seemingly endlessly talented.
Her being a badass would always be the highlight. Just disregarding her angel attitude and when she just... Like in the second paintball. She was one of the true heroes I didn't like Shirley all too much. She was always too nice and at the same time so judgemental... Yet when she was manipulative and powerful she was the best character
