Improved light quality in this clip, but still a little ratio problem for the "readers" on smartphones and tablets I think. I cannot fix it better. La Scala Milano, Giorgio Strehler, Claudio Abbado 1976
I mean... I don’t understand how someone like Netrebko even dares get close to this role when she is 1/20th the singer Verett was.. I mean the coloratura here is flawless
La Verrett is simply thrilling here, she truly was La Nera Callas, Lady Macbeth is truly the test for a female singer, range, flexibility and temperament. Verrett has it!!! Brava
Verdi's music, to me, captured the sweetness, and the agony, of the human experience better than anyone's. No one emoted through the music with more conviction and commitment better than Verrett. The combination of Verdi and Verrett was an enthralling tapestry of sound and emotion that unfolded like a supernatural world. Verrett will always be one of my favorite sopranos.
Look at these costumes! And the artistry with which they are handled! Is all this gone nowadays? And the the grandiosi Verret and Cappuccilli. Complete marriage of voice, musical insight, INTELLIGENCE and technique. Shall we ever ever witness such harmony?
Meravigliosa!
WOW! This is an example of true art. Golden age of opera performances. No silly inventions of the director that need to be complicatedly explained in the debates after the premiere, because they do not correspond at all with the libretto and music. Here ve have "just" a wonderful performance of what the librettist and composer created in the best singing and acting quality.
Viva Verdi!!!!! This is pure class. The singing and acting are just incredible; when he sees the ghost for the second time and falls to the ground he is truly a man possessed and the look of terror on lady m’s face! Wow! Glorious singing, superb conducting and a view of the stunning la scala; it doesn’t get much better! Thank you for sharing!
Good heavens. I'm breathless. It's this level of artistry that made me fall in love with opera in the first place. I'm so thankful this performance was preserved. Thank you for sharing it with us.
I absolutely love this opera. The modernity and realism of this scene are astonishing! Just listen to the lady when she says "il delitto è consumato, chi morì tornar non può"... unbelievable!
To think some would have been lucky to have seen both Verrett and Callas in this role at La Scala as only 24 years separated the productions. Such lucky people. Thank you for posting this fabulous clip
and Cappuccilli most probably the best Verdi baritone of the last 50 years. I saw his debut and development in the world. Amazing, believe me operafriends.
Abbado meraviglioso
Shirley Verrett & Piero Cappuccilli's vocal and acting skills are unsurpassed, that goes without saying, and those qualities are enhanced by the exceptional staging and direction. One of Verdi's finest masterpieces.
What can one say after watching and listening to this film, This is Supernatural Singing!!!!!!!!! Bravi!!!!!!! This literally helped me transport to .........
It must have been both electrifying and magnetic experience! A real strong memory. Everythime i watch it, i got shivers. The unity of music and stylished acting are fantastic.
In Gent (Belgio) in Madame Butterfly, Il Barjazzo cuando fu in completo sviluppo, e tanti anni dopo in Verona, Don Carlo e Rigoletto. e alla Scala.
of course THE REFERENCE forever historic opus at the Scala where the existed public doesn't wait for the final and applauses chears as far as the middle of act II sending roses to them !
As soon as i read your commment I knew the Callas queens (toxic bunch that they are) would come out of the woodwork. Don't you know that there has never been a singer in the entire history of the world as fabulous, amazing, breath-taking, tragic, blah blah blah as La Divina? Shame on you, shame I say. The cult of Callas bores me and her acolytes are indeed, very, very tiresome. Their unquestioning devotion leads me to wonder what is missing from their lives that they are so invested in these silly war of words. Ok Girls, let me have it!
As others note here, this is not a "coloratura" role. It is a dramatic soprano role with coloratura demands and most lyric and light coloraturas avoid this like the plague, as they should or they harm their voice. Sutherland could have been a great Lady Macbeth but it would have revealed what a third rate conductor Bonynge actually was if she had done it. He prevented her from singing a number of roles which she could have made a great mark on because of this, although she always said it was "because they want me to sing those loony ladies." When lyric coloraturas take this role on [thing Scotto] they generally do it late or they leave it after very few performances. Nilsson was a good Lady Macbeth because she was a great musician but her technique led to a little faking in the fast, complex parts.
@@NLidarAh, after looking at your channel I see you are a fully paid up member of the coven, therefore any cogent or insightful comment I might make would be pointless, one cannot not argue with a zealot.
@@dudeforcaster8630 A channel that has more than 30 different artists that aren't necessarily Callas? The foolish phrases you write here say more about you than anybody else. And unlike what you think, no, you're not anything special.
