YES!!! for anyone who does not have to deal with specialists on a regular. This doctor is RARE. Most will only deal with mind or brain and will pass off everything to the other (in my experience)
The neurologist talking about the 'divorce' between neurology and psychology as they relate is quite saddening. I wish every person could go to a specialist that actually takes the time to connect all the dots for them about their brain in regards to their personal history. People take the meds prescribed to them and then feel like a failure when they don't work but they very well have an incorrect diagnosis
That was a very basic and un-nuanced description of the actual situation (and he said ‘Psychiatry’ not ‘Psychology’ - important difference...). Psychiatrists are doctors and have the same fundamentals in neurology as any medical doctor (and slightly more due to their specialty...) Psychiatrists [good ones] absolutely take in to account neuro-physiology and physical condition of the brain (including traumatic brain injury) and in cases where required, absolutely refer people to a neurologist (i.e. in the case where someone says “I struggle to ‘think’ straight” or “I feel like I’m in a ‘brain-fog’ at times”... This Neurologist wasn’t ‘dissing’ Psychiatrists, simply acknowledging they have different specialties.
@@BuzzLightyear9999 respectfully, @anonymous above was absolutely correct in their statement. As a person who has dealt with neurologists since she was 7 and is now in her 30s, and has dealt with psychiatrists for the past 15 years, they could not be more divorced. Neurology in itself is barely a specialty as there are so many subspecialties underneath of it. This doctor is essentially a unicorn and I doubt that there are more than a handful of doctors who are trying to truly look at a patient as an entire person despite their specialty. Yes that divorce has become the norm but it absolutely shouldn't be because as he said you wouldn't give me high dose heart medication for chest pain without testing because it could very well be a pulled muscle. I can tell you anecdotally, I have never once had a neurologist ask about my mental health and I most certainly have never been asked about any type of brain trauma or brain illness by a psychiatrist.
@@BuzzLightyear9999 No, I live in other country and can say the same. Glad for you that you are luckier than most of us, but not need to be a gloating BITCH about it, have some empathy!
I LOVE this Doctor!!! I am a psychotherapist and love how he is using actual science to explain mental health issues! I want him to see all of my patients to do evaluations!
There’s nothing scientific about all this - it hasn’t been published in reputable peer-reviewed journals and it’s a racket. Look at his wiki: “has been condemned by scientists and doctors as lacking scientific validity and as being unethical, especially since the way SPECT is used in his clinics exposes people to harmful radiation with no clear benefit”
@@stuffwithmalla If you were in the mental health field you would understand what he is talking about. Obviously you are not, so don't speak on things you don't understand. You can find any web page that will say bad things about anything. your point is invalid.
Effie M everything new has been condemned by others. Just because he does a brain scan to assist in his treatment doesn’t mean it’s the only information he gets. Look at all the other tests he required. And he is making a lot of sense to me, and I’ve worked in mental Heath care for many years
@@sarahmcneely4618 "Don't speak on things you don't understand. Any web page says bad things about anything. Your point is invalid. Everything new has been condemnded by others" Holy shit are you for reals? I will speak up when I see bullshit that affects vulnerable people. The website has references, and I posted it because of them, for it is easier for you to look into them when they're in one place. DID YOU LOOK? You said, and I'll quote: " I want him to see all of my patients to do evaluations!" You want all of your patients to be subjected to radiation and pay over 3k for it when there's no evidence backing up the need to have this scan? I guess all your patients are rich as fuck, willing to pay for bs.
There seriously needs to be more doctors like this! He's thorough and actually listens! I totally need this doctor! I've had so many different diagnoses over the years, and none of them ever seem to fix anything... it really sucks to have to continue to struggle with these problems..
I was just telling my husband that I sufferer from low grand cronic depression. I too have had brain trama, about every 10 years of my life, recent was 2 years ago when I fell and head hit the corner of couch. Diffenently asking for a scan. This is incredable. Love to you both and Affie
Two flights of stairs. Wow. I’m so happy you both have a brighter future thanks to your being committed to getting healthier. Steve, your mom will most likely feel terrible but she will be happy to know you can be completely cured.
You guys. I've been to therapists and on medication since I was 9. I turned to drugs and alcohol to help manage it and that obviously only made it worse. Mix in some trauma...my brain is legit mixed up. So seriously from the bottom of my heart thank you for the courage to post this. I feel less insane. There are more options than just anti depressants and more causes.
My son fell off his bike when he was 14 (5 yrs ago) and has had so many issues ever since. These videos have helped explain a LOT! He has an appt with a neuropsych doc in February and I hope they find out some good stuff like this for him!
Rim blown away!!! I’ve suffered from depression and anxiety since I was a kid. I’m going to save every penny I have and all the loans I can take to see this doctor!!!!!!
Wellll my brain is screwed. Many years of drug use and multiple head injuries. I greatly wish I could see this doctor. Thank you so much for sharing Stephen ❤
Aww Stephens face...he looked relieved. Bless you both. Your videos have really helped guys. My gorgeous boy 19 yrs old has a big cannabis addiction. I lost my brother to drugs and alcohol. I also have an addictive personality. On another subject congratulations on your pregnancy. I am a midwife so love watching your journey. All the best...gorgeous little family xxx
Now I really want to get this done because when I was around 4 I fell on a metal slide and hit the back of my head hard enough that I still have a scar. I deal with a lot of mood issues (irritability, depression, anxiety) along with unrelated CPTSD, brain fog, fatigue, insomnia and I have two endocrine disorders.
I was about 7, I think, when I fell and hit my head and had to have some stitches in the back of my head. I have a lot of the same issues you mentioned. I was a clumsy child. I also fell backwards out if a door way when I was rolling around in my little walker thingy when I was super teeny. There's an incident I think I remember out in the barn at my house but I think that's the one where I had to get stitches in my head.
I need this so badly but am way way to poor w no insurance. I’ve had many concussions in my youth & have crippling depression & anxiety. This could explain so much. Wow. Thank u for sharing your journey.
OMG I need to see this doctor! Laura and Stephan, THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS! No one ever talks about this real life stuff. As always thanks for leading by example! 🙏🏽❣️
Actually refreshing seeing a specialist using oxygen chambers and light therapy. Both extreamly effective for both conditions! Not really used cause of cost sadly 🙄
I think these Brain related episodes are awesome. This doctor does a great job of explaining and helping the patient understand their brain. As well as giving them various options for treatment.
#1. Thank you SOOO much for sharing this! #2. This actually showed me I need to get to a doctor like this. I fell out of the back of a truck when I was around 7-8 and it paralyzed the right side of my body for about 20-30 minutes because I hit MY HEAD! And I never got any scans done to see if that done anything. (It was the 90’s, I lived on a farm.) A year later I wrecked my bike and hit my head and actually had to have my head stapled shut. So that could have very well done something as well. 3. I so much love you and Stephen for being so transparent. So many of us are dealing with the same problems and you 2 single handedly are making it less “horrible” to talk about and taking that fear away. 4. Thank you, Thank You, Thank you! From the bottom of my heart! ♥️
I’ve actually been looking into doing something like this thanks to you guys. I’ve been so curious especially with all my own problems. I am currently talking to my psychologist about it. ❤️🥺
Just as the good doctor said, for one to treat the mind (Psychologist) one should also treat the brain (Neurologist) It cannot hurt to check on the health of your brain with a scan as it is the Engine for all of your body's function - emotional, mental and physical. It could give you an actual visible reason to some or all issues you are seeking help for. It could answer questions you've been asking for a long time. Getting answers to your "why?" is absolutely worth it. Wishing and hoping for the best for you and sending you positive vibes.
Bladed Emissary are you a medical professional? Do you know how much radiation you’re exposed to when you do thess scans? Are you aware this guy’s claims have not been published in any reputable peer-reviewed journal? He sounds like a snakeoil salesman because.....
@@embunchofnumbers www.fda.gov/radiation-emitting-products/medical-x-ray-imaging/what-are-radiation-risks-ct So - yes I do know how much radiation you're exposed to, as it is available to anyone with internet access which also brings us access to RU-vid. And my responses did include the word "could" not should. Wishing and hoping you have a blessed day
What a great success story! I keep watching this because I still have a little depression I’d like to fix. And Steven is a wonderful man and SO lucky to have Laura! And Alfie!
This was absolutely wonderful, thank you for being so open, honest about this Stephen! Your honestly helping so many people to be ok with mental illness and the journey to finding better solutions to help with your mental health. Thank you xx
Laura and Stephen, thank you, thank you! Wow! You have opened my eyes to why my husband has ADD, depression and mood swings. He had a head trauma when he was little. No wonder he has these issues. Thank you for sharing this. I need to get Dr Amens book. Thank you so much!
Thank you guys for posting this, it honestly makes me want to get more help for my mental health issues and it makes me realize that it’s okay to get help. There is no shame in trying to be better.
What a great psychiatrist...if only that level of thoroughness and suggested therapies was more widely available to everyone. Good luck to both of you with your ongoing treatments. 💞
I went to the clinic in Atlanta GA after watching Laura’s video. I am hoping it will help me so I can get my daughter in next! I would love to have an appointment with Dr. Amen!
I have had the exact same bad thoughts about myself! That I'm worthless and dumb!! I've had an addiction for most of my life! I think I'm getting a brain scan! Thank you both for this!
This video may have just saved my younger sisters life and the lives of her children. We have a relative one town over from Costa Mesa and I’m going to send her out there to see this guy. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
This video makes me so sad about my life, but it is so informative. My children are shaken baby survivors and thank the Lord they were able to recover with no external physical damage. I know that I am definitely now gonna take them in to get their brains scanned bc they show a lot of symptoms of add. I don’t want them to have a lot of the meds that used to be used bc I saw it damage my cousins life (he had adhd). But if there’s something I can do therapy wise to know how to help my children be very functional in life and prevent any negative effects in their life. I like that this doctor isn’t focusing on prescription drugs to treat. He is using therapy and supplements. I hope I can find someone like this for my family. Thank you so much Stephen and Laura for sharing your journey. You have no idea how many questions you’ve answered for me, Stephen with my children and the direction I should go for preventative care for them.
this is so enlightening, I find it that many neglected to check the actual brain health if theirs any head injury whenever they have some mental disorders they will resort to taking the medication without really knowing the underlying cause of it. thank you guys for sharing your journey and it will help a lot of people to open up their mind to these possibilities of optimum brain health. Praying for your entire family's welfare.
I have ADD and your videos have helped me seek out a better alternative than my Adderal since that medication doe not make me feel like myself at all. I will also seek out a brain scan specialist in my local area to see if I can fix whatever my brain looks like. Thank you so much Laura!
I wish this doctor was here in Holland!!!! He's the best!!!!! He knows so much.... more then any other with this Profession. This Knowledge is very important!!!!
im really thankful for this video. It opened up a whole new window for me. just need a dr as caring as yours. i think you just made alot of peoples days. :)
OMG Thank you for posting this. We're getting our brains scanned! I was dropped as a newborn and partner hit a vehicle with face. This explains so much.
Thank you so much for this video! It was super informative! My son did a backflip into the pool at the age of 4 (in those 10 seconds when I turned around to get his towel). So it would be very interesting to see if it has any effect on him in the future. Thank you so much for all of you candid videos! They bring a lot of kindness and humility into the world.
When the doc went questioning Steven's beliefs with him, that's the concept Byron Katie is promoting too under the name "the work". It can be very helpful, I recommend looking her up!
So excited for you two, brain health really needs to be taken more seriously, it truly does affect literally every aspects of our lives, our bodies, our selves and all of those around us. Alternatives need to be more mainstream as well, I'm currently taking _another_ antidepressant that not only isn't helping, but the cons far outweigh any pros - and I know when I tell my doctor that I'm done with this medication he's simply going to recommend another. It's exhausting. Best of luck to you both! And best of wishes!
Thank you Laura and Stephen because of your generosity in showing your journey discovering what is wrong with your brains. I am just like both of you and am doing things that Dr.Amen recommends.
It’s probably why he’s so very creative! Sometimes, people’s brains (people themselves) adapt to a “malfunction” and strengthen other parts/neural pathways in their brains. It’s similar to someone becoming blind and their hearing becoming more acute. DON’T WORRY!!! Both of you are beautiful, healthy young people and should use this information as purely informational and not freak out about it. Peace! 😘❤️
Wow that was so interesting to watch. My son was also diagnosed with ADD but doesn’t have any hyperactive symptoms. It’s interesting how many people automatically associate ADD with hyper kids/people usually. Thanks for sharing guys I learned so much listening to that knowledgeable doctor! I wish I could have my brain scanned!! 😂❤️
I have been on Prozac since my husband was dying of kidney failure and it was upped after he passed. I have since dropped down to a low dose but can't wing myself off. I am ordering happy Saffron and light therapy. I really don't want to be on it anymore. Thank you for doing this video to let me see there are alternatives.
Doesn’t EVERYONE have holes in their brain for blood flow? I wish everyone could afford this so mental health could be more widespread to all, regardless of socioeconomic status...just sayin’
I am watching this and thinking it’s wonderful to see such detail and actual involvement in treatment. I also know that it is not affordable for the majority of people. I applaud this doctor and the treatment that both of you are getting. I am saddened that it is unattainable for all.
Its not affordable in a lot of countries. I'm lucky enough to live in Australia, where you get either free or heavily subsidised psychology sessions. You also get inpatient treatment free of charge under the government Medicare scheme.
@@mackmarshmallows I think they were specifically talking about america. I honestly had super cheap therapy session. I paid $40 but they proscribed me depression meds and anxiety meds and then messed up my scheduled appointment 3 times before I just left.
4 mins in and I'm balling like a baby. Thank you both for bringing awareness to this. Just watched it and it motivated me to make an appointment to check my hormone levels and go to the endocrinologist. Anything is a start. I'm also hoping to get my brain scanned eventually. Thank you 10000 times for this.
I am sitting here on the edge of my seat because I have literally never associated brain trauma with ADD or depression. When I was a little kid I ran into some cinder blocks face 1st and hit myself just under the eyes and I had black eyes for a few weeks. I think I was probably 3 years old at the time. So I was never dropped on my head that I know of but I did definitely plow face 1st in the some cinder blocks. I have ADD and I suffer with depression and I'm kind of wondering now if it might be related to this injury that I suffered when I was a young child????Mind blown. What kind of doctor did you go to to get a brain scan?
Im in the same boat I was 2 almost 3 and I climbed a bookshelf which then fell onto my head. I still have a scar from the stitches and deal with the same exact issue. Also always secure your bookshelves to walls if you have kiddos. And dressers. Or anything else that they can climb on really. Loll
We had really dangerous stairs growing up. I fell on my head several times as a small kid. I know my mom dropped me as a baby down the stairs but I don't have any information if my head was protected or not. It would explain a lot though.
Thank you guys for sharing this information. I am 47 and just starting to try and find out how to make my brain work normal? I do not have insurance so hopefully I can find a doctor that can help. Bless you guys and I hope your journey in getting your brain better is successful.
I also had 2 brain injuries when I was a child - age 3 or 4 - I have a scar on my head for it. Plus duing my alcoholism Addiction, ADD (ADHD as a child), depression always there and anxiety but I've always held down a job and a life but have always struggled in secret. Because of this video I went to the GP and asked for a brain scan. GPs are wonderful but they are Jack of all trades master of none so tried to not do it. I used what I learned from this video to explain to my GP why I need this scan and they changed their mind. I told them the treatment and as I have a good job im not looking for the NHS to fund it, ive sourced it and will pay for it myself. I already take 2 flaxeed oil tablets a day which is omega 3, 6, 9. They have referred me! I have to wait for an appointment in the post. Thank you so much guys. If I have the same thing I don't know how to contact you but I will find a way to thank you for saving my life xxx
Thank you for posting this. There's a lot of correlation between myself and your husband and... I'm not going to get into it right now but... Thank you.
Its true about what doctor said about nobody looks at the brain for depression or such things. My Dad was in total depression right 1 yr before his retirement. Doctor said confidently that it was a depression thinking about his retirement and started antidepressants. But after 8 months a brain scan said he had menigitis which caused all this and it was pretty serious. Luckily got the surgery done in time. He is healthy and sound now.
I loved this this gave me some insight, and some awareness. I acquired a head injury 4 years ago from getting hit by a truck on a bicycle and this gives me hope.
Wow. I kinda wish I could get a brain scan now just out of curiosity ! Anyway I really hope the treatment goes well for you Steven and that you'll be feeling much better in no time!!
Everything that doctor said to Steven felt like he was talking to me. I injured my head three times as a baby/toddler, and several times as an older child. I’m on Prozac which is doing nothing to help me, I have struggled with substance abuse issues and other impulsive behaviors. Now I want a brain scan! I wonder how much it would cost!
If this were my family and he’s been diagnosed with potential TBI I would get a second opinion with a specialist in neurology and TBI therapy. I know you guys really love this doc and all but def would explore varying opinions and potential treatment plans. The sauna idea to me was a bit off putting to treatment for TBI. Still very interesting and a good start to future treatment and better days for Steven. Best of luck to him.
Yall have inspired me in so many ways in life!!! I also surfer from anxiety and depression.. I have began looking for a good doctor near me in Virginia so I can get a brain scan! Before it's to late and they cant fix me. I've had alot of trauma in my life.
This was amazingly enlightening!!! I still need this Dr. Where is he??? OMG....I may actually have a chance to live a normal life after 58 years of hell !!!!!
Oh wow. TBI as a probable cause for depression? That does make sense for me. I fell down a small, rocky hill and blacked out when I was in 3rd grade, and I remember my symptoms started when I was in 4th grade. Thanks for sharing, Laura and Steven!
Who is this man. Everything Stephen is saying about his childhood is everything I went thru. We have all the same symptoms. Wow this is crazy. I need to see this doctor ASAP.
Thank you so much for sharing this video. It has been very eye opening. My whole life I have struggled with almost every symptom of ADD and I'm just now realizing.
Alot of this reminds me of my mom! She was born 3 months early in the 50s! It's a miracle she lived! I think she might also have some brain damage from that because she has extreme add, can't concentrate on anything! I'm going to definitely ask her to get tested.
Very cool video. I'm excited for you two with this doctor. Really wish his work wasn't unique. More mental health professionals need to use this approach. We'd all be much happier. Good luck, guys!
Just had my referral to Neurology so that I can get scanned. Always found it strange that they guess what's wrong with your brain rather than actually investigating. Hoping for some positive results from this. Been on various anti-depressants since the 90's and nothing has ever truly allowed me to function properly.
Oh my goodness im so happy for both of you to get your diagnosis and now you know how you can get better and reach your goals. So proud and happy for yous
Thank you guys soo much for showing us your journeys. Its been extremely enlightening and has filled me with positivity that I can feel better. Thank you again
Such an interesting doctor visit... I need this doctor in mah life!! I wish I had health insurance. I love you guys and am excited to see the plan in action for getting those brains healthy! The joy in this video is palpable!
