I was born in British Guiana in 1962 of a Brahman father and Kshatriya mother. From the stories passed on to me, the indentured labor system was a re-invention of slavery after the slave trade was abolished. The British used cruelty to control and maintain power. Atrocities abound. Today, we are a free people, we must remember our history. I live in Florida, but no matter what land I call home, “phir bhi dil hai Hindustani.” Jai Hind.

Um on the topic of English and Hindi languages coming together and being called Hinglish, isn't the accurate way we call it here, in Guyana we call it "CREOLE". While it came from the early Indian indentured labourers due to having to learn to speak English and it left a twang on the way they would speak and it became common throughout, we call it Creole English. In conclusion, we are a country of many people and cultures, passed down to us from our forefathers, and we all share it because WE ARE ALL GUYANESE: ONE PEOPLE, ONE NATION, ONE DESTINY, we (after our forefathers that came to this land) were born under one flag and grew up on the land known as Guyana. Hope this helps to add some more perspective. The video is lovely, great job.

Great video! As someone of Surinamese descent this was quite informative as is it is parallel to the histories of the wider Caribbean, African, and Pacific South Asian diaspora in Suriname, Trinidad, Guadeloupe, Mauritius, Fiji, Jamaica, Seychelles, Belize and much much more. It should be noted though that we are not "just Indians" that happened to arrive there, but we have our own distinct cultures and local traditions that are influenced by our local ancestral lands from UP and Bihar mixed with the cultures of our countries we call home. This is why I prefer the people of Indian ancestry to be called with Indo-[country] because we have been in our countries for 5 generations and counting at the least. I just wanted to highlight this because our histories just go so unnoticed compared to our brothers and sisters of African descent with whom we share culture, food, values and our countries with. Our countries show that diversity truly is a strength. Like the Jamaicans say "Out of Many One People"

@@riazedn4728 I see where you're coming from, but if we have to be very specific we are Surinamese Indians or Indo-Surinamese in English. The prefix 'Indo' here denotes of Indian/South Asian origin broadly. We are Hindoestaans in Dutch, which has a different context in English. Hindustani means Indian which we are not. We hail from UP and Bihar. We are just Hindoestanen . Among other Surinamese people, we are just Surinamese and that's it. No Indo- or Afro- anything. But when we talk to the outside world, it is important to explain the diverse Surinamese population that seems to randomly exist in the jungles of South America. Thanks for telling of the struggles and hardships that Indentured workers from India endured! They deserve their success through the sacrifices they made to educate their children and contribute to the overall development of Guyana ,Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and the Fiji islands!! God Alone knows what Indian people endured and suffered at the hands of the hypocritical British and other jealous minorities in those countries! Thankfully, they never forgot their traditional roots and language which kept them together as a people! Fa❤🙏🏽❤️👍👍mily closeness, respect for Elders , taking education and responsibility seriously, matters very much to these fascinating people!!

The history of Indian migration to Suriname is very similar to Guyana. The migration of Indians, particularly from Bihar, to Suriname in the 1800s is a significant part of history. This migration was primarily driven by the system of indentured labor that emerged following the abolition of slavery in 1863 In the period between 1873 and 1916, more than 34,000 people emigrated from British India to Suriname to work on plantations as indentured laborers. The majority of these immigrants were from modern-day Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, with smaller numbers from Haryana, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu.

The true history of Guyana begins with the indigenous Indians. Caribs, Arawaks, and several other smaller tribes who were all fiercely independent of their way of living. The Dutch were the first Europeans settlers, then came the French, and lastly were the British who brought many slaves to labour without wages cutting sugar canes on their plantations. When slavery was abolished the British brought indentured labourers from Medeira to work on the plantations, but many died of malaria from mosquito bites and heat exhaustion. The British then brought the Chinese who found the work too hard and the pay too little and wanted to return to China, but the British would make no effort for the Chinese to return to their homeland. Many revolted, some of them killing themselves rather than work like slaves for the British. Lastly, they brought Indians from East India with the promise of owning a piece of land after X amount of years of servitude with little pay. And the rest, as they say., is history.

Even 600 years before the nut head Christopher Columbus People from Africa used to trade with South and Central American continent. State of Mali in Africa had very great relations with the indigenous so called "red indians". Africa was the source for trade to this continent and continuous people movement across the Atlantic . I was just discussing this topic with a person from India. The simple reason why Indians are found in most if not all British commonwealth nations is because India was the biggest and most prosperous nation part of the commonwealth, providing about 1.2 million army men for the world wars. They carried British passports and were very much part of the empire. So, they are just like any other race who travelled to these far shores to settle like all the Euro races did. Anyone surprised about Indian race spread around the world..this is a history lesson for you, its simply because they were part of the British Empire and free to travel and settle in any of these nations.

Hell, have you ever heard Hindus talk about Muslims? "Fullaman this and Fullaman that and everywhere Fullaman go is problems". Let's not talk about politics and how the PPP carry on Despite the obvious racial intermingling in Georgetown, country Indian parents used to encourage their daughters to drink gramoxone (a common poison) rather than have relationship with a Black man. You never heard of the reverse happening. NEVER. That kind of thing used to happen in Trinidad as well I am not Guyanese but I am West Indian from a close island and have many close Guyanese friends. Many of them live in the US and Canada (NYC, DC, Florida, Toronto) but many live and work in Guyana and they are from all walks of life: carpenters, mechanics, lawyers, a High Court Justice, a Government Minister, teachers, etc. They are of every racial category you can think of: Black, Indian, "white", "Portagee", Chinese, Indigenous (aka Buck), Syrian, plus all types of mixes you can imagine. There isn't much you can tell me about Guyana or the West Indies in general

@Sooopa_Doopa

@sanjaydoshi7968 There were levels to oppression. I'm not saying that it was a cake walk for Indians but the simple fact is that the Indian experience in the West Indies pales when compared to the Black experience. Indians were never owned. From birth to death, generation after generation after generation for hundreds of years Blacks were OWNED. Millions died and were just pitched overboard on the passage from Africa to the West Indies. As possessions Blacks were subject to rape, torture, killing and maiming. One could rape a Black woman and then gain a new possession to exploit. There were countless revolts but with every revolt, collective punishment was meted out throughout the various islands and territories in order to maintain order. Family members were sold to other islands other countries, never to be seen or heard from again. That was NEVER the Indian experience in the West Indies Attempting to minimize the suffering of other groups and/or draw false equivalencies in order to crown yourself as The King of Pain accomplishes nothing except to drive wedges between communities

Indentureship though cruel is nothing compared to slavery there definitely is an attempt to equalise indentureship to slavery maybe later on to press for reparation There are some groups in which mamon is most sacred.

Indian hindu from India: in the carrebean countries the hindu population is declining due to desert born religions. It is very much of concern. Hinduness with centuries old philosophies can only bring peace and prosperity to an inviduals and Guyana as a country.

The only problem with Guyana is that it has among the highest crime rates in the world. This despite a population of less than a million. Vast deposits of oil have been discovered offshore by Chevron and these promise to make Guyana into a very wealthy nation. Tourism has great potential as well with it's pristine wilderness. Retirement communities for elders ia another area which has tremendous potential. But crime has to be controlled and, at the moment, it is completely out of the capabilities of the current system.

Namaste Gee, Vedas:Svetashvatara Upanishad chapter 4 verse 19 As well as in: “There is no image of Him” (Svetashvatara Upanishad 4:19) It is mentioned in Yajurved Chapter 32 Verse 3 “There is no image of Him” (Yajurved 32:3) It is also mentioned in Yajurveda Chapter 40 verse 9 “They enter darkness those who worship natural things (for e.g. air, water, fire, etc.). They sink deeper in darkness those who worship sambhuti i.e. created things (for e.g. table, chair, car, idol etc.) (Yajurved 40:9) Idol worship, which is very common amongst the Hindus, is prohibited in Hinduism. It is mentioned in Bhagavad Gita Chapter 7 verse 20: “Those whose intelligence has been stolen by material desires they worship demigods i.e. idols.(Bhagavad Gita 7:20) * Hindu Scriptures: "There is only ONE God, not the second; not at all, not at all, not in the least bit."[Brahma Sutra] * Hindu Scriptures: "He is ONE ONLY without a second." [Chandogya Upanishad 6:2:1] Hindu Scriptures: " O friends, do not worship ANYBODY but Him, the Divine One. Praise Him ALONE."[Rigveda 8:1:1] Hindu Scriptures: "I am the goal of life, the LORD and support of all, the inner witness, the abode of all. I am the only refuge, the ONE true friend; I am the beginning, the staying, and the end of creation; I am the womb and the eternal seed. I am heat; I give and withhold the rain. I am immortality and I am death; I am what is and what is not"[Bhagavad Gita 9:18-19] Hindu Scriptures: "There is no likeness of Him." [Svetasvatara Upanishad 4:19] * Hindu Scriptures: "His form is not to be seen; no one sees Him with the eye." [Svetasvatara Upanishad 4:20] * Hindu Scriptures: "That which cannot be seen by the eyes, but by which the eyes see, [Kena Upanishad] * Hindu Scriptures: "The Formless Supreme Spirit that pervades the universe can have no material representation, likeness or image." -- (Yajur Veda Hindu Scriptures: "He is bodiless and pure." [Yajurveda 40:8] Scriptures: "Of Him there are neither parents nor lord." [Svetasvatara Upanishad 6:9] Hindu Scriptures: "They are enveloped in darkness, in other words, are steeped in ignorance and sunk in the greatest depths of misery who worship the uncreated, eternal prakrti -- the material cause of the world -- in place of the All-pervading God, but those who worship visible things born of the prakrti, such as the earth, trees, bodies (human and the like) in place of God are enveloped in still greater darkness, in other words, they are extremely foolish, fall into an awful hell of pain and sorrow, and suffer terribly for a long time" (Yajur Veda)
