This series has not only brought back memories of the 1980 mini series but some personal memories as well. I remember my mother having a crush on Richard Chamberlain. My father taking the novel to work to read during his breaks and me flipping through the novel as soon as he got home. I was only going to watch one episode but this series is so well done I watched the two available episodes back to back Even the CGI is nearly flawless. The characters, the exploitation and power plays are so well done and written. Looking forward to the next episodes.

Great video ❤ I have watched Shogun back in 1980 and the latest. And I read the book I think they are great. The latest is in depth though. With intricate stories with the characters. Sorry for correcting you though Anjin-san John Blackthorne is English not Dutch. He is the English pilot of a Dutch ship. It's in the book Shogun by James Clavell. As well as in the 1980 series. And Shogun is based on a real a 17th century English seaman name William Adams who arrived in Japan in the 1600s and met Tokugawa ieyasu. Mariko-san is based on Hosokawa Gracia a Japanese convert died as a hostage in Osaka in 1600. Sorry for the long explanation. I love Shogun and Japan. Ever since my father was stationed there in the 1950s. And heard about the Japanese culture and it's people. I fell in love with it. Thank you for great reviews.❤

Blackthorne is actually English sailing on a Dutch ship probably connected to the Dutch East India Company. I watched the original mini-series when it came out as a child. I am pleased with this new adaptation. It is beautifully shot and the sets are gorgeous. I am enjoying the subtitles. In the original, there were was a narrator interpreting the Japanese thoughts and impressions when there was no one in the scene to interpret. I think the subtitle makes me the viewer feel like I am experiencing the atmosphere more fully. Enjoying the reaction too, btw.
@songwright

John Blackthorne is based William Adams, the real English pilot from history who worked for a Dutch company of merchants based in Rotterdam. Adams also sailed with five ships and also lost four of them before he made it to Japan.

They have done some really intersting things with translations for the viewers. There's a couple of time they state they are speaking Portugese when they are obviously speaking English in the scene. It makes sense to move the exposition along. They're also doins some creative editing when other languanges are present.
@songwright
@songwright 4 месяца назад
@@Syntell Yes when we hear English we are to understand that they are speaking Portuguese to each other. The only time this convention doesn't work is when Blackthorne is speaking to his sailors. He should be speaking to them in Dutch, but I guess the showrunners didn't want to go through the trouble of having them speak Dutch. Also, when the priests are praying in Latin the subtitles say "Speaking Portuguese," which makes no sense.
@Cbricklyne
@Cbricklyne 4 месяца назад
@@songwright That is from the Japanese point of view. According to the Japanese at that time, the only foreigners and foreign nation were the Portuguese and Portugal - and that was thanks to the Portuguese themselves who kept the fact of other European nations' existence a secret from the Japanese just as the existence or whereabouts of Japan was kept a secret to other Europeans by the Portuguese (....up until then). So as far as the Japanese were concerned, any time they heard the "Savages" (any white person) speaking a foreign language, they were speaking Portuguese. That's why they keep referring to it as "Portuguese" even when it's obvious they're not speaking Portuguese. The story is being told from the Japanese point of view - unlike the original miniseries. Hence more subtitles and hence also why those subtitles are showing what the Japanese are thinking and not what the English translation might necessarily be.

No, that's not a westernized version of Mariko. The Executive Producer of this series is Hiroyuki Sanada himself and he's super hands-on in all the behind the scenes production stuff and ensuring the story is absolutely faithful to Japanese culture and how everything would be, ,....... and when I mean hands-on I mean, HANDS-ON. Everything down to how both women and men walk in Kimonos, how high a woman can actually look when she's talking to a man of higher status, the fact that they're using an antiquated version of Japanese that's no longer spoken in modern Japan (their version of Shakesperean English), the costumes, the architecture, how props are actually placed on set, and where they would correctly face. There's no way he would let them put a "westernized" version of her character on screen. On top of all that the other two Executive producers are two Japanese women, one of whose job prior to this was script-doctoring for movies and shows to help them ensure authenticity to Japanese language and culture in shows and movies.

I am thoroughly enjoying the series. I read the book when it first came out. I don't remember much detail, but I do remember that it was a page turner. I saw the series with Richard Chamberlain. Don't remember much detail, but I didn't come away with anything negative. I attended San Diego Comic Con last year. That's the first time I heard they were revisiting the story. If you've never been, networks will do what's called hotel wraps. There was a huge wrap over the front of the Hilton Bayfront Hotel, which is very close to the convention center. It was a Samurai on a horse. It was awesome!!! What sealed my interest, however, was one of the bags every attendee gets. It was a picture of a Samurai with his sword drawn, standing on a rocky shore, with a tall ship coming towards him. Initially, I wasn't given that bag, but I was determined to trade for one. Not only was I able to trade for it, but at the end of the convention, you're able to pick what you want if they have a surplus. I was able to pick up 2 more bags. I've cut that panel out of the bag, and framed it. That's how much I love it. Oddly enough, I've only really seen Hiroyuki Sanada in Avengers EndGame. While he only had a few minutes screen time, I was hooked on him. When I saw he was in this series, and that he was playing Toranaga, a smile came over my face. I'm definitely looking forward to the rest of the episodes, and your reactions.

@ZhangK71
@ZhangK71 4 месяца назад
Not quite, but the difference really isn’t that important to understand and appreciate the plot. “Shōgun” is the supreme military commander. “Taikō” is the title for “for whatever reason I couldn’t get the shōgun title, so I’ll just be called taikō while having basically the exact same function and authority”. The emperor is the “third” ruler of Japan, but he’s the one with actually no political power. The dead former taikō didn’t have the pedigree to become shōgun in name (though in effect he was exactly that). Toranaga has the pedigree to be an actual shōgun.
@leetman102
@leetman102 4 месяца назад
Taiko literally means "retired chancellor". Historically this was Toyotomi Hideyoshi's position when he retired from his Daijo Daijin(Chancellor of the realm) position. Hideyoshi couldn't get the Shogun position since he wasn't of Minamoto blood (Minowara in the the case of this show).

Toranaga wants the title "Shogun" - he just knows that if he admits to it, he'll never get it. The book and the series are how he maneuvers to get it. This is a Far East Machiavellian tale. Toranaga's best weapons, besides his samurai and his brains, are Mariko and Blackthorne/Erasmus. The book is a great read. He is not someone who doesn't want power - the role model for Clavell started a dynasty which ruled for 265 years. The real-life model of Clavell's Toranaga is Tokugawa Ieyasu - look him up - he clearly wasn't a person to hold power for someone else's family. You can learn about the real heir to the Taiko - Toyotomi Hideyori. Taiko isn't the emperor as this was a class-conscious society. Taikō (太閤) a title given to a retired Kampaku regent in Japan-see Sesshō and Kampaku. It commonly refers to Toyotomi Hideyoshi - the real-life role model for Clavell's Taiko. Back then, a person from a peasant background could never have the title "Shogun" or "Emperor", though no doubt he was the most powerful man in Japan at the time. There was and is an Imperial House of Japan - which dates back to 660 BC - but what they were doing in the 1600's - I haven't bothered to look up. I still have problems with the new actors, the faces of Richard Chamberlain, John Rhys-Davies, Toshiro Mifune - are still in my mind. Still, good show, the cast will grow on me, I guess. I enjoy your take on this show.

You bring dishonor on yourself, it taints you're entire bloodline - you're all "bad blood" from that point onward. The baby would have a dishonorable status for his entire life. That is why the mother, Fuji, wants to die as well and why Mariko understands completely - she was also "saved" from seppuku by Toranaga's orders though she should have died alongside her father. The dude didn't just disrespect Ishido and Toranaga by making a scene - he broke a hugely important etiquette rule by drawing his blade in the home where he's a sacred/untouchable guest (not to mention the presence of all the highest level lords in the country). He might as well have shit on the dinner table and killed the family dog, while threatening to kill all the lords present. So yeah - he wasn't just rude, he wrecked himself completely. For a good reason, for a loyal, passionate reason. Doesn't matter. Blackthorn is English, hired by a Dutch trading company. Rodrigues is Spanish, hired by the Portuguese. They are, within the context of the story, all speaking Portuguese, but to do that for real the entire show would need to be subtitled and that just wouldn't attract a wide enough audience (I'm sure that's what the producers would assume). Since the Protestants and Catholics of Europe are at war, Blackthorn feels justified in whatever actions the crew has taken against any Catholics and his whole purpose was to break the monopoly Portugal has on trade with China and Japan.
