John Blackthorne is based on the real life 17th-century English navigator William Adams, who was the first Englishman to visit Japan and became a samurai.

Just a point regarding English. No one is actually speaking English in the show. Blackthorn is speaking Dutch to his crew and Portuguese to everyone else

One bad scene in the first episode. Otherwise, the story goes from strength to strength. Best writing and acting ;-) Not Game of Thrones ... Game of Sushi.
