Ohtani purposefully lived in dorms most his life and gave all his money to his mom for the majority of his career. It is SERIOUSLY doubtful he is gambling or involved in crime.
Joe stereotyping Ohtani. The Yakuza isnt what it was anymore. Theyre dying off in Japan. Hes apeaking on a allegation he knows nothing about. Get with it Joe.
The yakuza is still very real and thriving. You don’t hear about it because you probably don’t live there. They stopped being a frontier of crime and instead control companies and corporations. You’d be surprised how much of Japan is still controlled by the yakuza
This actually might be the dumbest take I’ve ever heard from Joe. Absolutely nothing is proven that shohei gambled a single penny and he jumps straight to he has ties to the yakuza ??😂 cmon man
@@maldad9073 I'm a huge fan of the game but I don't see why they would post these two guys blathering-on about something they obviously know very little about.
I agree, and Ohtani should sue all these media's of telling lies about him, including that espn Iady who did the interview has no credibility as a jounalist should be sued to try and ruin Shohei by printing two misinformation statements given by Ippei whose a known liar without checking the facts. And now the dimwit trolls telling bunch of lies and blaming Shohei of this home run ball. Even saw haters coming on blaming Shohei for gifting a car to a teammate. The trolls will knock him for anything, but only end up looking like haters and fools.
Ohtani's contract is 10 years for $700 ($70M a year) but he's deferring ~97% of his salary ($68M a year) for 10 years so he'll "only" be paid $2M a year for the next 10 years (and only in 2034-2043 will be getting that $68M per year). I don't know, this doesn't sound like somebody with a multi-million dollar gambling problem to me (or maybe he's just gambling away all that lucrative New Balance money??).
@@oli.y I think it has something to do with MLB salary caps/luxury tax. If he agrees to a deferment, they can get more high value players without hitting salary cap and paying the luxury tax (to punish teams that try to "buy" a world series). I am not an expert by any means, but I think if they pay Ohtani when he's not playing for them they can avoid counting that 68M/yr towards the cap (thus allowing them to pay him and other players more in the long run since they are saving so much by not hitting cap).
I think he fully knew what his interpreter was doing but scandals are always political, the person whose gonna have to take the fall for optics is not going to be the one signed to a 700 million dollar deal.
Yeah I don’t think they actually think he’s in the mob. Just exploring the idea lol. The interpreter is viewed as the fall guy by the MLB fans, so it’s in most people’s opinions that Ohtani is a degenerate gambler like most Americans and needed a fall guy 😁
@@Umega101 Agreed. I’m no professional on the issue. I see how each NFL game garners more tv viewership, but the massive amount of games played (MLB vs NFL) far exceeds that. And the massive amount of income from fans (hotdogs, beers, etc) actually at the game means MLB can afford these salaries
What are you talking about? Are you bad at math? NFL is more profitable. And the average team salary is higher in the NFL (about 220m in the NFL and 165m in the MLB).
He didn’t ohtani wrote the checks. His name was on them. Two 500,000 checks. Ohtani said he was paying the debt for his interpreter who was like 4 mill in the hole. If it’s true or not he can’t be involved with gambling whatsoever. So even paying the debt for gambling is not allowed for. His interpreter was his best friend which sounds like he’s a real friend and is just taking the blame at this point
The potential issue, no one is talking about, is how the illegal bookie knew the money was coming from Ohtani. Meaning he had blackmail on Ohtani. It's unknown the bookie used that leverage but for the bookie to have that power over the best player in a whole major sports league is an insanely big problem.
His interpreter is a con man. He lied about working for the Red Sox. He got close to a guy that doesnt speak English and was able to talk his way into Ohtani's life and getting him to trust him, even with his money. I can see how Ohtani could've been fooled by him. Look at Fabia and how he got into Diego Sanchez's head. Even Tom Brady's guru Alex Guerrero is shady and i think used Tom. And now they have decided to part ways as business partners on the TB12 brand. Brady is going to rebrand.
*I love the grounded reality of this channel!!!* Retirement took a toll on my finances, but with my involvement in the digital market, $27,000 weekly returns has been life changing. AWESOME GOD❤️
Only God knows how much grateful i am. After so much struggles I now own a new house and my family is happy once again everything is finally falling into place!!
The way the statute was written in the Bank Secrecy Act, "willful blindness" is not a legal defense. Ohtani is legally responsible for his own financial transactions. Plus his accountants, agents, etc, all should have been monitoring his money. Somebody should have red flagged the missing $4.5M.
Brian I just wanted to let u know I am someone who lives for baseball. Been playing it since I was 4 and watch 162 Phillies games a year. It is the best reality show in the world. U get to know the players so well by the end of the season. I drove 13 hours with my father to clear water and didn’t sleep for 36 hours just to watch Phillies spring training with my dad. It’s hard to truly understand what makes baseball great to most ppl. Especially in the adhd go go go world
The news reports say that the bookie knew the interpreter's BFF was Ohtani. The bookie also dropped Shohei's name to help grow his business. And the bookie knew that Shohei's real last name was Otani without the h, because that is the legal name on the bank account of the wire transfers.
The dumb trolls accussing him are actually the ones that bets on games, bunch of loser's 😅 I knew right away Shohei was innocent, there is no way he would be wiring money from his own bank account to a illegal sports bookie.
All the short bus riders claiming Joe was the one who brought up the whole yakuza association is ludicrous. Check out the internet. This is over a half a billion! There’s definitely sticky fingers involved.
Remember Pete Rose was'nt a player but a manager in the dugout when he was gambling, just like Ippei is a translater whose in the dugout. For them betting was part of their action because they not player's. But people are delusional and nuts to think Shohei was gambling which he has no history of, he makes over a hundred million dollars in endorsements, have everything to lose in his prime and risk his entire career. Even his own teammates said he refused to go to casino's with them.
Even if ohtani didn’t bet, it is obvious he knew about it. No one just comes out and immediately admits they stole millions unless they are taking one for the team. Ippei would just let his lawyers talk instead of admitting to make story go away. If you don’t realize this, you are out of touch with reality or a dodger fan. Or both.
For the first time since I have been watching and enjoying your show, on this topic Joe, you don't have any idea of what you are talking about. Ohtani is possibly the greatest baseball player ever... you are just talking misconceptions without any facts.
If you bet on yourself to win, you own the liability of "taking it easy" today for the big bet tomorrow, or risking injury today at the expense of sitting out or taking it easier tomorrow when the winnings are less or void. This is doubly true when management of teams is involved. There are, unfortunately, no ways to allow those involved with the outcome of games to gamble that do not result in conflict of interest.
Yes, it's also rumored that Pete Rose would gamble on a game on Saturday, not use his closer for the game on Friday, then use his closer for that game on Saturday that he gambled on. Gambling potentially changed how he managed.
1. He never owed 4.5 million at one time. He owed smaller amounts $500k at a time which he paid off. on several occasions. 2. How does the bookie know what the guys salary is. If he knew he was connected to Shohei there would be multiple reasons to let Ippei rack up a big debt. 3. He paid off his debts, so why wouldn't he keep letting him rack up more.
40,000,000 in sponsorships and deal each year also for a 10+ years, So that’s another 400,000,000 no one talks about Fun fact, his deal makes him more money than most mlb player’s actual salaries
My guess is he was betting on baseball, threw his interpreter under the bus knowing damn well the guy was managing his burner account, but it will all go away. He’s waaay too valuable to MLB.
I knew right away Shohei was innocent after I watched his press conferance. First of all there is no way he would be wiring money from his own bank account to a illegal sports bookie. Second in his statement he said I never bet on sports and I had no knowledge and was robbed. If he is lying then he would not be totally denying everything, because the truth will come out soon and he knows if he totally denies then it will be his lagacy and career over and tarnished. Even Pete Rose in 1989 deny but partially admitted he bet on sports (later he said he bet on baseball) And players who used steriods deny but partially admitted by saying the trainer injected without their knowledge or say did'nt know it was steriods. In this case a guilty person will not totally deny unless he is totally innocent like Shohei, and the hater's that knocked and accused him will look like fools.
Money doesn’t mean a thing. I know a couple of multi millionaires and they are miserable. They even bought me a 38k rolex and a gold bracelet, and I gave them back because his son was dating my daughter who is a RN. I told them after their son threw a iPhone at my daughter and I choked him out,I placed him in their Mercedes and said never contact me again. We have enough money to live comfortable lives.
Joe talking about talking during baseball because its casual viewing and not talking during fights while he hosts a fight companion where him and all of his boys talk while they're watching fights. Classic.
@@maldad9073 no, that's money that was earned in the US, it gets taxed. Unless he has an accountant or tax lawyer that knows how to manipulate the system and loopholes, but the IRS is still getting their cut, guaranteed.
alas japan got rid of the yakuza and then agreed to mass 3world immigration, and surprise surprise now have loads of problems with crime from the usual suspects
1. Shohei's name got brought up bc his interpreter was betting w an illegal bookie 2. A BASKETBALL player would go play a few minutes than say he's injured while people were betting his unders so they'd hit 3. Jamie should've been more on top of this part of the episode bc lord there was a lot of uncertainty around both of those situations 4. It amazes me how Joe Rogans brain automatically thought of the Yakuza during this lmao
Many people don't know this. Tod Bohley who is part owner of the Dodgers bought Chelsea FC for 5.2 billion dollars. The dodgers have money. They just can't flex it. A side note. In the past year Chelsea have spent 1 billion dollars on buying players! They also have a Saudi Arabia investor. Just food for thought.
Highly doubt it Also highly doubt a guy going to a foreign country and randomly starts betting on that country’s sport which they know nothing about Literally is the most outlandish take that Ohtani actually bets considering it’s actually a profession to sports bet because you actually have to sit down and think and know everything to predict who’s gonna win. You actually think Ohtani has the time to do that is why Scam callers have jobs because gullible people like you exist in this world that would believe the most ridiculous things
This is a prime example of what happens when you don't follow a topic and try to discuss it. That was easily the worst "baseball" segment I've ever heard.
