I remember going to a game in the late 00's when they played the Mariners and seeing the Japanese fans coming out in full force to see Ichiro play on an otherwise pretty mediocre team. I love the passion of Japanese baseball fans. The behavior of the Angels fans on the other hand was pretty shameful. A group of Ichiro fans stood up wearing shirts to spell out I-C-H-I-R-O and in response, Angels fans started throwing food and aluminum bottles at them...

I'm a lifelong Yankee fan and remember the old stadium days when there was no beer allowed in the right center field bleachers because the bleacher creatures were too rowdy. I've witnessed countless hats and jerseys from opposing teams get tossed onto the field lit on fire in the old stadium. I went to the series opener this year when the Angels came to NY and they were selling Ohtani jerseys in the stadium, in the team store. Outside the stadium, a dude with a little kiosk is one thing, but inside the stadium? Anyone familiar with Yankee Stadium knows that's absolutely unheard of.

Shohei has been donating money for many different people and projects but giving out 60,000 gloves to elementary schools in Japan recently has added more to his likability for many people. ❤ He is very genuine. He picks up trash still to this day (that was a thing to do in his high school team). His coach in Japan named “His personality” when he was asked what impressed him the most about Shohei during the interview (probably he wanted to ask Shohei’s ability to play) He is so humble and he has been that way all of his life. Any Japanese TV shows I have watched with Shohei in it alone proved that.❤ Shohei is our pride and joy. Everyone in Japan has become his father, mother, grandparents, brother and sister. 😂…although we all wish to be his lover and spouse ❤️ Well, recently we wish we were his dog 🐶🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣❤️❤️❤️ We love you and we are so proud of you. I mean we used to see superstar athletes from across different field (nba, mlb, nfl, nhl, football, etc) they got big contract and go flexing, buying mansion, sport cars, expensive jewelry and often times this behaviour become boomerang in the future for them... but Ohtani REALLY different from that, his dedication, work hard, focus and humble personality is a good and best role model for the next generations ❤❤

Finally someone got it right - this analysis nails the whole financial picture with Ohtani, both in terms of his insane real value and his admirable choice to put achievement on the field before money. I'm so tired of all these baseball pundits talking like selling his services to the highest bidder is his top priority when it's probably at the bottom of his list! He knows he will make more money wherever he plays than he could ever spend, so for him it's obviously about being on a winning team in a location that suits him. He understands that without being on a team with a strong roster he won't see the post season, and those other 39 players have to be paid as well - so you can guarantee that he will take less money to play for a team with a deep lineup than get more money from a team with a questionable supporting cast. Don't be surprised if he doesn't sign a long term deal - I'm sure the fate of teammate Mike Trout is not lost on him. Lengthy contracts are signed for optimizing financial return and stability, and I don't think either of those are of particular concern to Shohei.

He is overhyped. Because people say things like "possibly even better than Ruth". And I take part in the mania. I love Ohtani, I'm in awe of what he can do. But he's been in the league for 6 years, and has played the full year as a two way player a couple times. He is not anywhere in the vicinity with Ruth as a hitter, or as a pitcher. He does both once every 6 games, when he's starting, and for 6-7 innings at that. Realistically, he is a two way player 1/9 of the time he plays, the rest of the time he is a DH. A very good DH, but a DH none the less. A position that did not exist in Ruth's era, or surely he would have been the Red Sox DH on days he didn't pitch. 0:43 Fun fact: Both Ohtani and Messi share the unique quality of being two-way players. Messi is known for his exceptional abilities as both a playmaker and a goal scorer in football/soccer. He has the vision and creativity to create scoring opportunities for his teammates, while also possessing the skill and precision to score goals himself. And like Ohtani, Messi is known for his humility, making them true legends in their respective sports.

It is insane putting into perspective just how much money he generates for both himself, his team, and the sport at large. I really hope he keeps it up when he comes back next season, wherever it may be. I don't think I've seen a player so unanimously beloved by everyone no matter who they root for, and so world-renowned that everyone wants to see what he's doing. It's so fascinating getting to see it all unfold right before our eyes like this.

Ohtanis bringing worldwide attention to baseball. I'm British and have never seen a full baseball game in my life, I don't even know the game and playing rules other than very basics etc. So he single handedly is bringing the most important thing to baseball ball. Peoples eyes, time and viewing that may translate into financial gain for clubs, sponsors and USA baseball. I'd never even heard of him before yesterday. One of the most iconic people in sports, in modern day history. He deserves every ounce of recognition and respect. He is unbelievable with his talents and expertise. He is humble and doesn't take his big moments too seriously, in the sense that it is the greatest thing he could accomplish. He knows what he is worth and does an amazing job of displaying that with an immense amount of humbleness, while also displaying his superhuman skills to the rest of the baseball world. Ohtani can go to whatever team he feels fit, but when it comes to just his name, it will be iconic forever. He is an amazing and talented human being with much he has to still display, I wish him luck in whatever he chooses to pursue, I'll be rooting for him along the way. Good luck, Ohtani, may your name live on forever.

In the pantheon of baseball legends, there exists a figure cloaked in the roiling mists of both Mount Olympus and the Elysian Fields - a dual-aspected demigod wielding thunder in his arm and lightning in his bat. This is no mere mortal at play, but rather the ineffable Shohei Ohtani, a being whose talents whisper of the mythic heroes of old, yet whose flesh and blood anchor him in the temporal realm of mortals. To watch Ohtani pitch is to witness the graceful yet ferocious dance of a tempest. Each throw, a symphonic crescendo that crescendoes in the crash of the catcher's mitt; his arm, a conduit for the raw power of the storm, as Zeus's own bolt, hurls towards earth with precision that defies mere human capability. Batters stand as Sisyphean figures, eternally striving to conquer the insurmountable, to unravel the enigma of his arsenal, only to retreat, humbled by his elemental force. When the bat rests in Ohtani's grip, it transforms into an artist's brush, each stroke a deft sweep across the canvas of the field, painting arcs like the trails of shooting stars that enrapture the spectators in their otherworldly glow. His home runs are not mere hits; they are the embodiment of the cosmic ballet, each swing a manipulation of the very fabric of the space-time baseball continuum, collapsing distances as if the outfield walls dematerialize with the sheer will of his intent.

He really isn't one of the best pitchers because he doesn't make 30+ starts like the best pitchers do. He is great when he's out there, but he barely pitches the innings required to qualify for the ERA title. And as of right now, we have no idea if he will ever be even close to what he was. Smart teams will stay far away from a long term deal with him. Most I would do right now is 2-3 years 100 million. Because he is worth nearly that as a DH, so if he doesn't pitch again, you aren't getting crushed on the value.

@@snerdtergusonBOOM! Facts, sir! People are braindead that don’t realize this contract will COMPLETELY smother ANY team he goes to. If he gets hurt pitching, he can’t hit. If he gets hurt hitting, he can’t pitch. If ANYTHING goes wrong in his rehab next year, you’re paying him exorbitant amounts of money without a return on your investment. Four years MAX is all anyone should give him til he gets back on the mound!

Did miss the main point of the video? Just having Shohei on the team means a boatload of money in ad revenue from Japanese companies, merch sales, etc. As stated in the video, before he even stepped foot in MLB, Angels probably already paid off his yearly salary in the extra interest he generated. They then made the equivalent to his yearly salary every 5 games. That was rookie Ohtani, not unquestionably the best player in all of baseball Ohtani.

@@Passinoutsticks No team is going to invest in Ohtani's abilities alone. He is more popular in Japan than the children of the Imperial family or any athlete, many media outlets feature him at the top of major news stories every day, and the equipment and clothes he uses sell out quickly. The team that acquires Ohtani will surely get a huge amount of Japan money. Incidentally, whether they acquire Yamamoto, Imanaga, or any other Japanese player, they will not have the same economic impact as Ohtani, so their investment will only be recouped through their ability and success.

No wonder the Blue Jays have been mentioned as a dark horse candidate for Ohtani. Their parent company is Rogers Communications, who owns Sportsnet and has a virtual monopoly on broadcasting and coverage of Blue Jays games. They also own Rogers Centre. Many of their subsidiaries would earn revenue off of Ohtani playing in Toronto - not just their Blue Jays subsidiary. Ohtani's high school mentor (Kikuchi) is also on the current Blue Jays roster. I still only give Toronto a 1% chance to sign Ohtani, though. Slim chance.
