Shohei Ohtani's RISP Update + the Los Angeles Dodgers Didn't Strike Out in Win vs. DBacks

The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the DBacks in the series opener and did something they haven't done since 2006 -- go an entire game without striking out. The offense put up eight runs, including an RBI single from Shohei Ohtani after missing an opportunity with runners in scoring position earlier in the game. Has Ohtani figured it out or is there still more to improve on? Lastly, James Paxton has struggled with his control and it finally cost him some runs on Monday. Will he improve on his walks, or his time in the rotation just a matter of time with some healthy pitchers coming back at some point.

Great to see the approach at the plate overall, no strikeouts, taking walks. The pitching has been better, the bullpen more solid, defense good, productive bottom of the lineup. Good to see the “complete team” performance David Robert talked about. Ohtani for some reason is been overaggressive, even when he was an angel he had a better approach, it’s a mental thing, just like he was before hitting his first HR. His career OPS in clutch situations is one the best ever, don’t try to do too much, just put the ball in play and in the long run the numbers will look better. About Paxton, you can’t have the Blake snell approach without the stuff. A I think he will be the 6th starter. That way the bullpen games don’t need to happen. Or make the paxton starts the bullpen game if he starts bad hook him soon.

I think that a pitcher being in a top anything MLB batting category is outrageous.

This may sound like I'm making an excuse, but at least a small part of the reason why Ohtani has struggled in high leverage situations is that often when he comes up to bat in a high leverage situation, that's when the other team will bring in their best lefty reliever. Every team has at least one or two guys like that in their bullpen whose job is to come in to face lefty power hitters in critical situations. Looking at his left/right splits this year, his OPS is .500 points higher vs. righties. Last year it was about .250 higher, not quite as lopsided but still a significant difference. The gap should get smaller over the full season. Hopefully because he starts hitting lefties better (and he has in the past). His OPS vs. lefties is about .200 lower than it was last year.

The fact that he burns out the opponent's pitchers, is just as good. Batting value is still as high if he was RBI leader

Only six of his 42 PA with RISP have come against a lefty reliever.

Othani does well when he goes to left field.Othani puffs his cheeks and closes his eyes when he pulls the ball. He needs to let the air out and he will hit the ball even harder.

He's not stretched out to go 5+ . U know his ERA is 2:60, right? they'll roll with him until the league figures Paxton out. Won't be much longer probably

Noah Syndergaard never wanted to adapt after he lost his velocity and try to become more Crafty and more of a pitcher and not just a hard thrower.

He's still a free agent. He was getting his velo up to 96.5 by spring in the few agent training field. He will be back at some point

The thing that stands out to me with Ohtani with runners in scoring position is that it seems the failure comes in the biggest situations. I keep waiting for Ohtani to have a big signature moment with the Dodgers and it has not come. Bases loaded two outs in the 9th against St. Louis and he has weak contact to end the game. Down 6-4 to the Mets with bases loaded and he struck out. Another bases-loaded failure against Toronto. The double play last night. Mookie has been on base in front of him at a .479 clip and 5 of 7 Ohtani homers have been solo. He is hitting .417 with bases empty with 5 homers, .273 with runners on with 2 homers. With a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs, he is hitting .125. In high leverage situations, he his 2 for 21 (.095) with 1 rbi and zero extra base hits. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, he is hitting .000 and with the bases loaded he is also hitting .000. So, while overall, the numbers are good, and the RISP numbers are improving, he still has lots of room for improvement. When he gets going, this offense is really going to take off.

Playing below avg, for sure! ATL coming up!!! we'll see how we stack up, and if we can get out their 1-9. And if our 5-6 can not K too much. And if our 8-9 aren't automatic outs. Lux is trending up tho. Outman?? He'll get a long leash. The CT3 N Outman quasi platoon isn't working. Outman needs to go to AAA for 3 weeks, then bring him back until trade deadline and see where he's at?
