Tom Selleck won an Emmy for his portrayal of Thomas Magnum, a charming private detective who lives in Hawaii on the estate of an absentee millionaire. Though a bit of a rascal, Magnum investigates his cases with skill, deftly moving about an island that is luxurious, exotic, and sometimes dangerous. Successfully blending doses of action, mystery, irreverent comedy, and poignant drama, this series became one of the biggest hits in television history and afforded Selleck and his characterization iconic status.

One of the things I like about Magnum PI is despite that the main character was a Navy Seal, he not portrayed as a One Man Army, he has useful skills and experiences that give him an edge in a fight but he is not invincible and dose get hurt. Also despite the glamorous setting and being an adventure show, the show could be gritty at times. The show was good mix of serious storytelling and escapism.

Absolutely Thomas Sullivan Magnum. Gets shot, pushes through 'Nam flashbacks, uses his knowledge, investigative ability and wits to first track down and then protect a woman WHO ISN'T EVEN HIS CLIENT. That was a great thing about Magnum, his cases were seldom straightforward. They pulled him into a conflict, but he often had to investigate just to find out who he should protect. But the end of the clip is perfectly Selleck's Magnum, "Uh, T.C., help." He was absolutely the hero, and he doesn't come off as one, just a guy who was able to help, but then also needed help himself. Magnum p.i. really hit the right note, and it still resonates.

Magnum definitely had flaws, which we all came to love… Like the way he was CONSTANTLY making amateur mistakes as he talked about writing his book on how to be a world class private investigator! 😂 Or the way he ALWAYS seemed to be in debt to Rick for things like his bar tab, and to T.C. for all the gas and bullet holes in his helicopter, or the way he was ALWAYS haggling with Higgins to borrow Robin’s equipment and facilities, which he then often damaged or lost… And much like Rockford, Magnum almost NEVER gets paid for his work, or if he does, he never really comes out ahead after all the mishaps and disasters he has along the way. In short: Even though he hardly ever pays anyone back, his friends still always help him, because Magnum is such a straight arrow guy who always HAS their back! And one has to admit, there’s something really appealing about the idea of a pauper like Rockford or Magnum who somehow still manages to live the high life, cannot be bought off or intimidated by those who are truly rich and powerful, and despite being poor, always make full use of what they have to fight for The Little Guy. 🙂

According to Larry Manetti, who played Rick, this is the episode that almost got the show cancelled after one season. It was dedicated to Robert Van Der Kar, a camera man who died on board a helicopter while filming parts of this episode. The episode is called "Skin Deep."

Granted, this was one of the weaker episodes in terms of writing, but I can’t imagine that ONE episode like that would be a reason in itself to cancel the whole series. Why???

I remember the first time I saw Ian McShane in HBO's "Deadwood", I instantly remembered him from this particular Magnum episode! This is great to be able to see these clips of one of my most favorite shows back in the 80's! And of course seeing Tom Selleck play "Lance White" on the "The Rockford Files" was a hoot! Aloha To All

tHanks to all in the comments. It looks like Ian McShane started in the 80's...then went back to the old west....and then another few hundred years to sail the seas. A better time traveler we may never witness.
