Shooting 3D Printed Rocket Powered Tank Rounds

Today we're shooting some 3D printed 37mm tank rounds, used in the World War 2 M3 Stuart tank and the M3 anti tank gun, out of our revolutionary war style black powder cannon with a rocket C6-7 model rocket added to them! All of the print are printed using PLA with 100% infill so they are completely solid. Will the cannon ignite the rocket motor? How will they withstand the cannon pressure? How accurate are they? Let's find out!
As a bonus we've got some long distance shots with some normal cannonballs at 100 and 150 yards. Can we pull it off?

Without spin the rocket shell needs the center of mass in front of the center of aerodynamic pressure. So try a lead nose, and maybe add either fins [needs a sabot and dealing with supersonic effects...] or just extend a thin hollow plastic shell at the rear. Look up how to test model rocket stability with a string. Basically tie a 6ft string around the shell at the center of mass balance point and swing it around in a circle, a stable shell/rocket will point into the wind. Be sure to test with both a full weight and empty [used] rocket motor. Don't ignite it, just swing.

Oh and C6-7 is not a great engine type for this. Get some booster-stage engines like a C6-0 or C11-0 (Red label and always end in a "-0" delay charge). You are using an upper stage(purple label) which includes wasted components like a long after thrust delay (7 seconds) and a parachute ejection charge.

That 150 yards shot proves that both the cannon and the cannoneer are accurate, congrats on your aim man. The only thing that prevented the rocket rounds from being laser-like accurate was aerodynamic stability. I wonder if diabolo pellets would be accurate if you stick a rocket motor in the middle.

Rocket scientist (well, one semester of rocket science listener) here. You seem to have a very big problem with stability, that is why your 100 yard shots missed. The easiest way to improve it would be following RPG-7 design: a conventional rocket (not a shell! - it has to be kinda longer and have deployable fins) fired by a relatively small powder charge in order to gain some initial velocity while the rocket engine is not outputting full thrust. …at this point, I’m not even gonna bother asking why this showed up in my recommended videos. The RU-vid algorithm works in mysterious ways and I’ve passed the point where asking “how is this in my feed” will net me anything other than screaming from beyond the void. I’m just gonna sit back and enjoy the sheer absurdity of a guy shooting a *personal cannon* out on a range. I can just imagine the giddy little smirk on the ATF officer’s face when they gave you the all clear to purchase your cannon; probably made their day! Now with that outta the way, I’m probably not the only one who noticed the shells key-holing like nobody’s business at round-abouts 150 yards; I’m guessing that’s probably their maximum range (even with the rocket motor) without you having to design some sorta discarding sabot or other such stabilizing mechanism for them. I also noticed that the rockets probably burned out around that distance as well. I got two questions for ya: 1. Would a discarding sabot even work with your setup? 2. What brand of hobby rocket are you using? (I’m asking because certain brands might be better suited for your endeavors in regards to distance, burn control and burn time)

Hahaha actually we made it and that’s totally legal and the ATF doesn’t consider black powder mussel loading cannons as anything at all other than antiques haha. Oh for sure. They need a bit of rifling added to them. As for the rocket motor I think it was estes. Just what they had at the store.

i'm not too surprised this worked as well as it did. fused cannon shells were very popular in the 1800's until the invention of shell-guns. the ignition of the propellent charge would then light the shells fuse which then detonated either right before or after the shell hit a target. yeah. reliability might as well be rolled on a d20, but worked enough of the time to be in mass use. the one thing i would change with the rocket shell is maybe acting a slower burning fuse into the rocket itself that'll provide a longer burn which should increase the reliability of the rocket. my thoughts is that the burning black powder isn't burning long enough to reliably ignite the different kind of propellant within the rocket itself.

I just recently watched a video about shell guns and their ability to just level sailing ships and it gave me a few ideas for some videos too. Those things are scary. I’ve got a few more ideas for rockets so I’ll have to add maybe a bottle rocket fuse and see what happens. Ironically the one time we did stick some cannon fuse in there it didn’t ignite!

@@TheCannoneerShell guns, like the 110lb Armstrong gun, were insanely powerful. However their rate of was usually measured in minutes per shot instead of the more practical for battle Shots per Minute. By the time of the American Civil War, Shell guns were being considered and some steam powered sailing ships were slowly being armed with the new weapon. During the Crimean War, shell guns started to hit their stride. And yes, coalition ships armed with shell guns easily made short work of the more napoleonic style sailing ships of the Russian empires black sea fleet. Shell guns of all sizes were the preferred armament up until the very early 1900's until the development of quick-firing guns which fired single piece shells with self contained propellant charges. But I believe that becomes beyond the scope of your channel.

I tend to be mostly anti-troop, so grapeshot, canister, flechette, and then maybe a "micro-APFSDS" for high velocity anti-melon maneuvers. It's be cool to see the muzzle velocity of these as well.

They flew pretty straight for just the cone and engine maybe you could add little fins to it or make the cone with grooves in it to help with spin or add a ring at the base where the engine it so it'd work like a tank round

You could make a hollow space in the head of the rocket, fill it with flash powder and cap it off with a 209 shotgun primer. Taofledermaus did something similar with 12 gage slugs. 1.5 bore is big enough for a significant payload.

Be careful, even though the cannon isn't a destructive device, once loaded with an exploding projectile, it most certainly becomes one legally

@@zebdeming Since it doesn't fire fixed ammunition, the cannon wouldn't be considered a DD, but exploding projectiles likely would be. There are channel creators who have the proper licensing to make such things, so a collab with one of them would be the simple way to accomplish such a video without risking either life and limb or running afoul of the alphabet agencies who regulate such things. Still probably get you on a list though. ;-)

Thats why you affix (glue, bolt and weld) core components in projectiles, if you dont typically it separates @1:56 freeze frame, im fairly certain the rocket motor took out your camera...

I’ll have to try that next time we shoot some rocket stuff! A viewer sent me a gyrojet shell he designed for the cannon so that will be super fun!

@@TheCannoneer you should be able to buy Quick Match paste in America.. Packing your rocket motor with 4F and a dollop of quick match to hold it in place will fix your issue....

Another awesome video man keep doing what you're doing! I mean eventually you'll be creating new classifications federal law regarding cannons and 3D printed projectiles. That or you'll get get recruited by Raytheon haha 😆. Love it keep safe and keep killing it!

I've launched a lot of model rockets so I doubted any would light, the one that did suprised me. Basically a hot ember needs to make it up into the engines nozzle, you should play the lottery lol

I wasn’t quite sure what would happen with any of them but the amount of sparks that fly out of the cannon if you just touch it off without a projectile is crazy!

Those rocket rounds are dope. Looks like it might be keyholing a little. Maybe have a little sabot housing attached? Or gyro holes, like the gyrojet rounds.

Lighting the rocket with the regular electric igniter should be able to light the powder I would think. If you can route the wire through the touch hole. Not that it matters. I'm sure that little C6 has puny energy compared to the powder charge.

I’m just shocked it set it off and they sort of worked well! I’ll have to try a different method if we revisit this one!
