I used to do a lot of ACW era competition shooting with both small arms and artillery. Seeing what canister shot does when fired out of a 12 pounder Napoleon gun or 20 pounder Parrott Rifle is a frighteningly impressive thing. I'm actually kind of impressed that that 3D-printed canister held up as well as it did after the main charge ignited. I thought it would just disintegrate instantly, allowing the gas to just flow around it and just kind of "foof" the shot out of the barrel. But I suppose the the fact you used good ol' black powder, and its far lower chamber pressures and crazy fast burn rate helped a lot to prevent that happening. Very cool though. That's a really field piece you have there. That was fun to see. A like and a new sub for you!

From what I could find and I asked a few collectors that had taken them apart, they were loose in the casing and it was just a very thin tin lining that was meant to come apart on firing. They only have a range of up to 250 yards of use from what I can seem to find. They used them to take out vegetation too which sounds like an interesting use.

Would like more information on the cannon barrel… and if it’s up to snuff, have you considered adding on top of the black powder (I hope you’re using actual BP and not substitute like Pyrex as that stuff is junk for large bore) 1% smokeless pistol/shotgun powder… and chronograph BP only and then the 1% smokeless on top of the BP velocity. BP under smokeless will ignite smokeless properly as smokeless need pressure to burn correctly… Would love to see the difference this makes with a solid lead ball. Also this isn’t as dumb as it may sound to some, several people mix these two this way, you just have to use your head and not go full retard. Russians even did it back in the early 1900s from a lack of powder. If your barrel is steel, not cast, and thick, I’d do it in a heart beat…I’d read more up on it though to try to figure out a safe max.
@TheCannoneer
@TheCannoneer Месяц назад
It's almost 2" thick solid steel so it should be able to withstand it. I'll have to talk with "the boss" when it comes to that as he's a bit protective on the cannon hahaha and we only use BP btw!
