SHOOTING FILM IN THE FOG | Bronica ETRSi + Yashica T4 (expired film)

In this video Karin is experimenting with a slightly different form of storytelling: the battle between 'inside-Karin' - telling the story from the comfort of home - vs. 'outside-Karin' - telling the story while being in the field - is on. Who of them will tell the story in the end?
Other than that, of course one important part cannot be missed: film photography! Equipped with the Bronica ETRSi and the Yashica T4 Karin is gotta catch'em shots since fog is a rare occurrence over in this part of Germany.
Special thanks goes out to @jp.wtf (Instagram) who sparked the idea of also shooting POV-perspective videos with waist-level viewfinder cameras.

Awesome episode absolutely adore the Bron just a gorgeous experience shooting that camera. Back in my old home yorkshire we had regular fog as a sports shooter back in the day I loved it as nailing a shot of a hard as nails rugby league player rampaging out of the mist always made great frames. These days in New Zealand we get plenty of early fog always enjoy a foggy morning shoot. Enjoyed that mate cheers 📷❤️

Like the videos you put out, thanks. You may be aware of this, if you find yourself out in fog again with Yashica T4 you can press the flash button on top of the camera and scroll through till it shows a mountain image, on this setting the focus is locked at infinity so no auto focus problems when shooting distant subjects in fog. You do have to remember to set this each time as when you switch off the camera goes back to it's default auto mode, hope this helps as they are great little cameras.

Luckily I have great viewers and people who remind me of things like that - because I actually totally forgot about this feature while being outside! Using this would have probably saved some of those out of focus shots. Next time I will remember and try this out for sure, thanks a lot for the reminder! :)

Taking pictures in the fog is awesome. We also have way too few foggy days here in Zürich. Can’t remember when I shot the last time in the fog. Wish you many more foggy days in the upcoming twenty years and please take us with you.

I live on the coast of Southern California. All summer long we get fog, we call it June Gloom. But it makes for excellent photography in the neighborhood.

That gopro angle reminds me of the POV scenes in the Hangover. Really cool angle. I'm kinda disappointed you didn't come up with a Denglish pun with "Mist". I love a pun. haha the socks rolling into the shoes is actually a torturous feeling. Ah you pulled it back at the end though haha

Dein Video hat mich an Paulchen Panther erinnert ... auf der Pirsch durch den Nebel 😅. Ja, leider gibt es nicht oft solche Nebeltage.... und wenn, dann bin ich oft auf den Weg zur Arbeit 😬. Am besten haben mir die B&W Bilder gefallen, ich finde die bekommen bei Nebel erst recht den „mystischen Look“. Ich fotografiere auch gerne mit der ETRSi und habe mir einen Ekla Trolley zugelegt damit ich mein Equipment nicht rumschleppen muss. Manchmal bei Treppen hinderlich, aber dafür kann man es sich auch mal bequem machen und auf den „richtigen“ Auslösemoment abwarten 😎. Leider ist mir letztens mit der Bronica ein dummer Fehler passiert. Ich wollte mein Filmback wechseln..., irgendwie habe ich gepennt und das Back versehentlich geöffnet 😩. Na ja, bin mal gespannt ob noch ein paar brauchbare Bilder dabei sind. Aber daraus lernt man(n) 😜. Ich freue mich über weitere Folgen 👍. Gruß Kai

Hahaha - um ehrlich zu sein hat es sich so sogar ein wenig angefühlt! Die Bronica kann schon gut auf die Arme gehen wenn man sie den ganzen Tag rumschleppt, da ist dein Ansatz tatsächlich eine kreative Lösung dem etwas zu entkommen. :) Dann drücke ich mal die Daumen, dass der Film noch zu retten ist und allenfalls ein paar coole Lightleaks mit drauf sind. ✌🏼 (Und mir ist das übrigens auch schonmal passiert)

I know, here it's pretty much: autumn - rain winter - rain spring - rain summer - a little less rain I prefer the more "extreme" seasons though as you describe it in Canada.

@@KarinMajoka Our seasons are very distinctive here in southwestern Manitoba. Summer is very hot and humid, autumn is dry and clear and overall very nice, winter is (usually) bitterly cold (-30C) and windy, spring is just a damn mess that can't decide what it wants to be

Very creative (and refreshingly quirky) video and nice photos. It’s a pity about the Yashica’s focus, although that was maybe you summoning your inner Hiroshi Sugimoto :) . Do you ever shoot square format? I wonder how some of those images of the swan (?) on the lake would have looked in square.

Thanks for your kind words, I appreciate it a lot! My work is not even close to masters like Hiroshi Sugimoto but I absolutely love that reference. Honestly, square format is something that I am still kind of intrigued by. I am not sure if I have understood how to compose in square properly yet, so I don't use it that often - also my 6x6 camera is not the greatest in terms of image quality. Do you have any experiences shooting square format?

@@KarinMajoka All of my medium format is on 6x6 these days :) I like how it works well for symmetry accompanied with negative space, or for instances when you fill the frame with your subject. If you like your Bronica, the SQ-A is a solid offering for 6x6, although my favorite is using a Rollei TLR :)

Man great photographers that I look up to (as for example Adrian from the channel aows) produce some incredible work on 6x6. I guess I will have to step out of my comfort zone and try it out some more maybe in the future. :)

I’d say foggy weather is photo weather. If listening to music when foggygraphing, Door’s song People Are Strange is a good companion. Next to foggy weather is a morning when the humidity in the air has been frozen and covers everything like a white icing.

I assume you have that kind of weather more often in Sweden, do you? Here (at least where I live in Germany) fog and frozen morning do not happen that often. But when they do I am the happiest girl ever and grab my camera in no time!

Karin, I revisit your photos because (1) take remarkable images that get us curious (2) blend it with catchy music that gets the viewer relaxed. I wonder if you should be involved with film editing and motion pictures in Hollywood. Not just a passing compliment either. Many who post on RU-vid have some expertise, but only some are clear, purposeful and can get us wondering about an image, the place and time. You are able to accomplish photos in fog, which would get some shooters fumbling w their light meter and wondering if the fog might scatter the light and give a meter a false reading. Also follow news on CNN & BBC that governments are calling for more lockdowns in Europe for the virus. Europe is not alone on this issue. Truly hope life can back to normal where we can go about w our cameras and not stress out over the virus. People, night scenes, night markets & scenes of friends getting together are what excite me as a shooter. You did inspire me to pick up a Voigtlander Noktor 50mm lens for my Leica M3. Thank you again.

But I have to say that I am faaaaaar away from doing something like editing professionally, I got into it when I started this RU-vid channel and had to learn everything from scratch, so there is still a lot to learn out there. Oh so cool, how are you liking the 50mm Nokton? Would be curious to hear about your experiences with it. And I am totally with you on your point, I cannot wait until we are able to live life normally again because I am missing those crowded streets and the possibility to see peoples' emotions, since they are not hidden under the masks. But I guess we have to do what we have to do and for now we have to wait it out.

@@KarinMajoka Hi, Karin My Voigtlander 50mm Aspherical f1.5 lens arrived and it fits perfectly on my Leica M3. The lens looks beautiful and shows such workmanship and great glass. I will be shooting some Kodak T Max 400 and maybe some Fuji Provia 100F color reversal film. Due to the virus lockdown and also some reports of assaults, shootings and hate crimes in Northern California, photography is a bit harder & have to be confined to day hours and w more people around. The new lens focuses quite smoothly and 1/2 step increment f stops is smooth. This is too exciting. I did use an f 2.8 Elmar collapsible lens but the f ring sits next to the ring that collapses the lens, so I have to adjust the f carefully. Now with a fixed lens where focus and f stops are separate rings, it will be easier. I don't post on RU-vid or use social media other than Twitter, so when I get some scanned images, how do I connect or share them w you? Understand fully if you have privacy concerns but I am so excited to try this Voigtlander lens. Be well and safe, Karin.

Karin, the images in the fog are interesting but they make me feel lonely, that I should be indoors with a cup of hot chocolate & a good book. Outside photos in colder weather isn't easy, tissues not withstanding. Perhaps it is your location, but finding more "features" such as barns, abandoned machinery and old trees with foliage might give images a bit more pop. Still nicely done, though I would suggest taking tissues and wipes for colder weather.

If the photos make you feel something that is all I wanted to accomplish, even though it might be uneasy feelings such a loneliness. Sadly, here in Germany we are currently more or less pinned to where we live due to the lockdown, therefore it's not really possible to find locations like the ones that you had in mind - but hopefully one day! And I will surely pay more attention in having tissues with me when shooting outside in the cold haha

Water and fog is the best. Our local river fogs up a fair bit. If I only remembered to pull the slider out of the back of my bronica last time I wouldn't have waster 2 rolls of film

Oh man, I totaaaaally feel you! Happens to me a lot as well, but my Bronica does not fire with the dark slide in, which helps me remember to take it out. Hope you get another chance to catch those foggy shots! :)

The same shit with my favorite Hexar AF which focuses really fast like lots of modern AF cameras. But in the fog.... I can set manual focus on it but it's not so easy to estimate the distance on еуе.

Habe vorhin zum ersten mal , seit gefühlten fünftausend Jahren wieder ein 120er Film entwichelt. Man, fühlt sich das seltsam an. Es waren zwar nur Testfotos, aber immerhin. Mein neuer Scanner scheint zu funktonieren dafür ist das Zählwerk an einem von meinen beiden Etr Magazinen defekt. Es scheint aber trotzdem zu transportieren.

Glückwunsch! Bei mir fühlt es sich auch immer etwas komisch an, wenn ich lange nicht mehr entwickelt habe. Aber irgendwie ist es ja doch ein bisschen wie Fahrradfahren und man verlernt/vergisst es zum Glück nicht so richtig. :)

Lovely video. Was always too afraid of fog/moisture damaging my gear so I've never walked in fog to take photos. Is all your gear ok/any precautions for this kind of weather shooting?

It was foggy but luckily did not feel very moist. Therefore my gear is fine and I did not experience any issues. :) I would also not go out in the pouring rain with a precious camera, but I think of my cameras as tools and when they get some scratches or marks, that's part of the game as long as they still work. :)

I used the L bracket I also show in the video to mount my GoPro on top of the Bronica so that I would record the viewfinder.

In 2020 I had one day only of fog when I did not work and the fog lasted long enough for me to have breakfast and be able to still catch some fog

Congrats, one foggy day is better than none! :) Two or so months before I recorded this video we had a reaaaally really foggy day over where I live. I had to leave the house for work when it was dark, saw the fog from my office all day and when I went back home it was dark again and also the fog was gone. Super frustrating. Therfore, having a foggy morning and having the day off is the best thing ever!

Can I ask how you shoot 400 film at 200 on your ETRSi? I have one, but I'm not sure how to do that :/

Which meter do you use with the ETRSi? I use an external light meter and simply tell my meter that the film is iso 200 instead of iso 400 and expose it accordingly.

You are actually correct, it‘s pronounced „kah-rin“. But since people had a hard time pronouncing it and everybody got it wrong anyway I gave up and used the American pronunciation haha. Oh and in some parts of Germany it can get really foggy actually, it really depends! I live in the West and my city is pretty „flat“ without any hills or mountains. My sister for example lives in the South, in a city that is surrounded by mountains and forests - and there it gets foggy pretty often.
