Wow... what a spectacular place Snowdonia is. Have you been? If you live in the UK and you haven't, you need to!
I confess, I had never been to Snowdonia before, but we recently visited on a family holiday, and I was totally blown away. Just a spectacular place. I'm always complaining about how bland and boring the British countryside is, and then there is Snowdonia.
Now, for me it's about a four hour drive, which makes it just about too far to do in a day. Which is a real shame, because it rules it out of my usual photography days out. But I would love to visit during the winter, see what the mountains look like then. Must be absolutely incredible.
Ok then, to the photography. Now, as you know I have a love hate relationship with landscape photography. I love doing it, but I hate the results!
I feel like I'm making some progress on that one. I'm still really enjoying getting out in nature and hiking with my camera, and I'm still not really impressed with the results I'm getting, but I feel like I have a little more insight into why that might be.
There's more thinking to be done on this one, more pondering time to give to the subject. But I think I'm missing a narrative in some of my landscape photography, a story for the image to tell.
Now, the big question is how I find that story. And that is not something I have an answer to right now. But it's something I will be looking into in future videos.
In the meantime, what are your thoughts on this one? Did you like the results? Let me know what your thoughts were while watching!

I find these videos so calming! I'm busy editing commercial work, but having these videos running just off-screen on my laptop just helps me feel calm.

That's what I love about those trips out, so calming and I just love spending time on my own in nature. I just wish I got more excited about the photos!!

I’ve been really enjoying my ETRS. Had it put just this week, with some fantastic results. It’s really a great piece of kit!

After one of your videos on the ETRS I took mine out. So long since I used it preferring to S2a instead. Forgot it only takes 15 shots and was in a cave system using slow exposures and forgot about the B setting on the lens! That's the trouble with too many cameras as you never get to know them well. Only your favorite ones.i think why your river ones did not work for me was the clock watching due to family commitments. When I'm at a river in France im absorbing myself in the area and taking my time to maybe come away with one good shot. Using my 5x7 linhof that slows me down and the fact I only had fomapan 100 with terrible reciprocity failure and my exposure ended up 18 mins! I took one one shot of that scene but the photo came out and yes I would hang that one up on the wall

Having too many cameras is definitely an issue. I often feel that going out and putting a couple of rolls through a camera and then posting on RU-vid isn't really do anyone any favours. You can't get the best out of these cameras in a couple of rolls, it takes at least a few trips out with a camera, and a review of the results, to have any idea how it behaves. If only there were 30 hours in every day, I might stand a chance of doing them justice! I toyed with the idea of not even including the river shots, because they did no one any good. But it's stuff to talk about, it's a good example of how being short on time really is a hindrance for a shoot like this. You have to have time, and you have to slow down. One again, that elusive 30 hour day would be a great improvement for me! I would have preferred to take the LF camera with me on this trip, but I get so much grief from my wife about how much camera gear I pack for family holidays! When the car is full and I haven't put the kids' bags in yet... that's when I get in trouble!

Thank you. Every landscape photography outing ends up being a soul searching investigation of my persona, somehow!

i liked the photos i think it's down to you if you like your photos you might not want to print them out or put them on the wall but you can look back at them and think i enjoyed taking them and was a good few hours out on my own.

I definitely have that, I did enjoy taking them and I enjoyed the time and the process. So you're right, they do have merit for that. And they have merit from the POV of self-critique, and improving my landscape photography. So there is plenty to take away from the shoot. Perhaps I need to be less down on me landscape images!!

there is no good or bad photographs. In your photographs, you work mainly on horizontal lines and that's pretty static. I dont believe in stories in photographs, but I have one approach: first I determine the main point or focus point with the question 'what in this landscape makes it beautiful ?' then I substract all annoying elements to minimalism. Then I will try to draw a graphical way for the eyes to my focus point, it can be light, contrast, form, curves, colors etc. But the first thing is to contemplate, no hurry, feel and wait a bit before framing or composing. Imagine you have only one attempt. When the weather is cloudy I will use black and white, and develop longer my film multiply by 1.4 the time. Your homeworks: choose a rock, a tree, anything and for 4 weeks: take photographs only of it every week whatever the weather, light etc

I think there’s some very good advice there. Working too fast is definitely a fault of mine. I don’t spend enough time contemplating, as you say, and I rush into take photographs. I’m sure that is part of my issue with landscapes. Interesting what you say about taking a rock, for example, and spending a long time on just that subject. When I think about it, taking a photo of a rock, I don’t feel inspired. I don’t believe, initially, that I can get a photo of a rock that I will find rewarding. But why not? Perhaps there is a thought process there that I need to explore…. Interesting.

Enjoyed the video and the wrap up at the end, especially. Do I bring back award winners every time I go out for a shoot? Hardly. Do I enjoy the process of picking a subject, determining framing and exposure, and being alone with my thoughts in such beautiful places? Absolutely. I’m also intrigued regarding the ETRS. Did you mention that you had a Mamiya 645 at one point? And that you absolutely prefer the Bronica over the Mamiya? I had a M645 for a few years but ultimately parted with it because it just didn’t do anything for me. I wonder how I’d feel about the Bronica… Also, I’ll be looking forward to the Kowa episode. I did a review on mine a few weeks ago. I’ve owned it since 1990, and I think it’s a solid performer if you treat it well. As a word of warning, though, and as everyone will surely point out - it’s pronounced co-ah and not cow-ah. Apparently I’ve been pronouncing it wrong for 30 yrs 😬. Cheers!

And there's the rub - is the process enough? Or should I take more pleasure in the results also? I absolutely enjoy the process, but I feel like I want to get more from the results. Or els what is the purpose of the process? I fear I'm going to think myself into a loop here!! I did have a Mamiya 645, and that was a nice camera, but I am definitely enjoying the ETRS more. Now, why is that.... I'm not sure I will be able to put my finger on it! The results definitely help. The lens I have is apparently one of the more modern ones, and it is tack sharp. I think the ETRS is also slightly newer than the M645 I had, and feels just like a generation more sure of itself, if that makes sense? Just a little more precise, a tiny bit easier to connect with. Now that you're making me think about it, I think it's a lot to do with the connection between what I see in the viewfinder compared with the end result. With the ETRS they're more aligned, whereas with the M645 I felt there was more uncertainty... we're getting deep now! I do think that a lot of that could be age though, the I had a 645J and the ETRS is about 15 years younger. Definitely worth a try though. I would recommend the ETRS over the ETR, I had both and the ETR feels like it belongs in a previous generation of cameras. And finally... thank you for the pronunciation! I will now be able to avoid making that faux pas... although I'm sure I will find others!! That one coming up!
