Well unfortunately the two clash all the time. In America if you end up with a gsw and you get to a hospital within 20 mins you have a 90% chance of surviving. Unless it hit an artery and you were not given proper rapid response care. Tips: If you are ever shot in a limb and you see a lot of blood it’s best to make a tourniquet out of whatever you have on you. Belts can work but you need to apply a lot of pressure. If you have strong shoelaces those are better. Bind it as tight as you can by hand and then use some kind of object like a pen to slip under the binding and turn it again and again till it’s far beyond uncomfortably tight. If you are shot in the torso or a spot that cannot use a tourniquet on then tear up a shirt or something else into strips and (I know this will sound counterintuitive) stuff the wound with those strips. Pack the wound as much as you can. It will hurt. Obviously if you happen to be close to gauze or a roll of gauze like bandage keep stuffing the wound as you pull off the roll. Then bandage the top and place pressure on it and get to a hospital. Taking these steps will significantly reduce bleeding and increase your chance of survival. Check to see if any bones are broken and could pose a risk to puncturing an organ like a lung or if it could tear an artery in the arm or leg. The brachial artery runs along the shoulder and bicep while the femoral artery runs along the inside of the thigh near the bone. So check for these before you start moving as a breach in an artery, especially the femoral, will result in you bleeding so rapidly you will lose consciousness swiftly before you really have a chance to react and attempt to stop the bleeding and soon after that you will exsanguinate and expire. So be mindful of this. Also a broken rib could puncture a lung. So be mindful of the breaths you take. Outside of that you should have someone contact 911, 999, 111, or how ever you contact emergency services. If you are alone then contact them yourself. Use speakerphone if you can and follow the guide above while speaking to dispatch. Make sure to tell the dispatcher where you’ve been shot, and if the shooter is still present. They will ask so it’s best to just get it out of the way. They will send a cop and any time a cop is involved you are at risk of getting shot again. Just ask the 60 yr old white man who had been shot and called 911 for aid. When the cop showed up he shot the guy three more times through the window on his door because he saw the old man holding a gun. The same gun he used to drive the original attacker off. The cop never announced himself or made his presence known in any way. Never attempted to ascertain the identity of the person he was shooting and then ran in and kicked the man before he realized what he had just done. In the body cam vid he proceeds to blame the homeowner for getting shot again. “You shouldn’t have a gun” To which the old man said without missing a beat, while having FOUR bullets in his body “ *NO! YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE A GUN* . You’re supposed to identify what you’re shooting you asshole” The cop stammers and says “Let not talk about this now. Let’s focus on saving your life” “No, shit. That’s what I was doing before your dumb ass showed up. You’ve just made my problem four times worse. Don’t shoot the medic when he comes” “You had a gun” “IT’S MY FUCKING HOUSE, I WAS DEFENDING IT FROM THE GUY WHO SHOT ME THE FIRST TIME” Anyway. It’s also worth mentioning that each gunshot wound reduces that 90% by approximately 10% depending on where you got shot and how and the caliber of the round or even the type of round. Your age and overall health also play a huge factor. Keep all this in mind the next time the second amendment and healthcare clash. I hope it never happens to you but this information could save your life or the life of someone you love. This is America. Your odds of getting shot are pretty high. Especially if you deal with cops a lot. Police violence is not only a black issue.
