Learn how to shop for your minimalist capsule wardrobe much better with these stylist shopping tips!
Today, you’re coming shopping with me in NYC as I hunt for things for my summer capsule wardrobe for 2022. Shopping can be incredibly challenging, and oftentimes when I’m working with a client, they are surprised at how much further I keep looking than they do. I do have to admit that learning that I am a House of Colour Winter has made the experience significantly easier for me, since I now shop through the lens of color first, and then eliminate based on fit. This means that I try on far fewer things in the store, but I find MORE items that actually work for my wardrobe. Having my new House of Colour Fans, which I hadn’t shown you yet, has been super helpful, so in this video I’ll show you how to use them.
This is a different style of video than I normally create, it’s more of a NYC shopping vlog, but I enjoyed getting out of the house and bringing you with me for a little bit! I did do a little bit of a Nordstrom shop with me - found a few great things there, but I also hit Mango, Banana Republic, and Abercrombie & Fitch - but I didn’t buy something at all stores, since not all of them had things in my winter palette.

Shopping with the color fan makes it easier and saves time. I recently took my mom shopping who is an Autumn. We found 10 blouses in her colors right away. She ended up buying 7 of them. The best part was the look on her face in the dressing room when she saw how good she looked in those colors. Priceless.

@@vazq_Fernanda We went to TJ Maxx. It’s not my favorite place to shop because you never know what you are going to find. But in this case, it worked out for my mom.

Wait, your tip about going dressed in a great outfit already is SO obvious that I feel dumb now that I think about it! I've shopped before feeling frumpy and crappy about myself and now I can see why I'd impulsively buy clothes... Great tips!!

I loved this! Thank you! The vibe was so friendly. It was great to see Buttercup on her walk too. I'm not a natural shopper due to personality, health problems and sensory issues, so anything which makes it simpler is great. I agree with you that having at least some idea of which colours definitely work, or don't, saves a lot of time and energy. Being petite also saves time, simply because there is less to choose from... sigh...

Yay! I want more! That was so fun. I've never been on a subway before or to NY so that was really neat. $800 for one dress, yikes! I also love it when stores put the merchandise out in color groups, it is helpful to find what you might look good in. 🥰

Fernanda, I loved this video. Your winter shade of pink, green and blues look amazing on you. I am a deep Autumn. At the end of the video you showed the entrance of the subway to Brooklyn. I have to say, I watched this yesterday, but I fell down such a deep rabbit hole in this RU-vid channel, I only got to write this comment now. This was amazing info!! I'm in the home stretch of breastfeeding my last baby and I'm looking at needing to acquire a lot of clothing to fill in what maternity/nursing clothing I'm donating. This was fun! I would've gravitated to those green dresses you tried---because I love the shade---but like you, I've discovered that deeper greens suit me a lot better. I think we have similar coloring, and after seeing how fantastic bright pink looks on you, I've been paying attention to tops in "berry" colors. My summer capsule has been navy, light blue, white, and pink/red for years now...but now I'm trying to refine the types of pink that flatter me most.

Great video - would love to see more of these. I have a friend that always buys things when we shop - they don't always fit, and are definitely not always in her colors, but she has to get something! It can take me much longer, and many more trips to get what I'm looking for.

That makes me wonder if she's actually after the endorphins more than the wardrobe building. There is something to be said for retail therapy, but I prefer to shop for food when I need this, since I know I will eat it!

I bring music . If you have ear buds , just put one in, put on something light and lilting , or rangy bangy (that's me lol) and I focus more on a really good song than I do on the Humes (that's what I call them humans) around you. Or you could go with a supportive friend, someone who will take the time to let you syphon off some of their good vibes yanno? Anxiety is one of those things that you have to power through sometimes. 💚 But you can do it.

I have the same issue at the other end of scale....no store anywhere carries women's tall in stock. I have to shop completely online.

It's very very common. It's because stores have to carry what they are actually able to sell, therefore what fits the most people.

It’s a space issue. I remember 10 years ago when the LOFT started having petites in store, it took away rack space from 1/4 of the store thus less items were available for sale in the store. So a lot of things I’d see online wouldn’t be in the store. I sometimes buy the tall but only after I’ve tried on the regular in store and realized I need another inch or two of fabric. You can order it from the store and it’s free shipping to your home.

I loved this. The tips are treat. I agree walking around to look at color first helps so much. Im a summer and I LOVED that blue dress on the model at the end. Im very tall though so it wouldnt work on me.

Hi! you know, I've been thinking about you. it kills me that RU-vid doesn't have an DM feature because I've been wanting to message you after my reply last week. I've been bombarded on Instagram with comments about the video I shared being fake and other unrelated and more hurtful things, and I haven't been able to address it - but you're 100% right that the light +camera plays a role, which is why color analysis has to be done in person! @@vazq_Fernanda I have come back to this comment after thinking about it. Firstly, I'm very sorry that you have experienced unkindness. It's so unnecessary. Secondly, your video wasn't fake. I just had a similar but less dramatic moment with a black dress, which I wore to sing at a funeral. Black is ok on me, but it was so much better when I put a slate blue/ grey cardigan with it. My skin (pale, cool pink) looked so much better. Anyway, you do a very good job, so please don't be discouraged.

@@vazq_Fernanda That's tall!! I'm 5' - and yes, the petite section of there stores is always a disappointment - they don't have all the styles, and they assume you like cutesy things. Talbots is fine but I find their clothes just a little too matronly (not everything, but a lot), and their fabrics are always so stiff. This year, Loft has been my go to - they seem to have things that suit a much wider demographic.

Honestly even that I'm after color analysis (between soft and cool summer and sometimes I take colors from winter) it is easier for me to buy clothes online and then return it. This kind of red which you tried is officially as neutral color and it should be right for you but thanks to your video I realize how it is tricky color :) now I can't wait for you summer capsule wardrobe - I have been following you from 2020 and it is incredible how your wardrobe has changed after color analysis. After your video that you're winter my first thought was "most of your clothes from your summer capsule aren't in winter color type" and the most funny is that you said it in the last video 🤣so I'm so curious of your summer capsule 2022 :)

Totally! Reds are tricky. True red is universal but if it's just a touch too warm, forget it. This one was right on the barrier. It looks more true red on camera than it did in person - it was more orange. I could tell right away it wasn't in my season. You know, I have found that too with online shopping but there was one piece I found in store in a Winter yellow that I wanted, but they didn't have in my size. I looked for it on the website and from the way it was photographed, I would have never purchased it - it looked like an Autumn golden yellow! So sometimes I do like to go just to see if I can find the trickier colors. Some are easier (black, navy, magenta) but the icy colors are hard to find for me

Hi Fernanda, based on the huge difference it made when comparing the cobalt blue to the red dress in the video, I was wondering if you would recommend not wearing any face make-up while shopping? I would for example normally use concealer to lessen any bags under my eyes, and I guess then it might be more difficult to see the effect of the right or wrong colour?

If you have done your color analysis, it doesn’t really matter cause you know what to look for. It would definitely be a clever way to shop for good colors through! But I do recommend making sure you check in natural light

Hola Fernanda! I live in a hot tropical climate and work out of my car making home visits to mentally I'll clients. What do you recommend for professional clothes in a hot climate where you are mostly outdoors in and out of your car? We are not allowed sleeveless clothes or tennis shoes.
