I know that this was done over a year ago but if you ever need to change that crank sensor you can wire in kill switch…I did so with a push button type that completes the circuit, strategically placed so if anyone tries to steal the only thing the truck will do is crank over. Been working great for over 20 years and gives you that peace of mind.

Congrats on the new grandchild I also have a three foot extension. I needed it to access on transmission bolt in the IH tractors.

Chuck, may I compliment you on your intro music/montage sir? It just seems to fit the channel so well... Yeah, that input bearing is pretty universal and works all the way back into the musclecar 60's on our Mopars (my '68 GTX has the same one installed, in fact). Sort of like how the "Magnum" starters work on all the old Mopar engines, too... yep, got one of those on the 440 to help with header clearance. Thanks and we'll see you in the next one, -Ed on the Ridge

Thanks Ed, that intro music is COOL. I’d like to throw in some AC/DC some time. I think that I just need to put up credits for them so that RU-vid would allow it.

People always say that the crank is not always drilled to fit the pilot bearing on these. Looks like that new style bearing just drives into the pilot hole where the converter would mount? I have also had people say that the hole beyond that is not always there, but in the case of how that is set up it looks like a fella could make a simple drill bushing that fits into the converter pilot and drill away with to get clearance for the input shaft.
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar Год назад
I think that, anymore, all cranks are set up for auto and take converter snout. That being said, the bearing that I ultimately used is the answer for putting a manual trans in. I've used that bearing on 2 different muscle cars that had a "later" crank as well. On a '65 Plymouth, it was definitely a 4 speed crank and you have to use the bushing that was made for it. Clear as mud?
@traviskingrey4335
@traviskingrey4335 Год назад
@@Chuck_House_of_Mopar definitely makes sense, there is a smaller hole beyond where you put that bearing in the converter snout, and I think that’s the one that is hit or miss there or not. Have you ever seen a “late” crank with out that? And is it even necessary?
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar Год назад
@@traviskingrey4335 I'm no guru on this subject for sure, I just know that you need to use a bearing vs the bushing in an application like this one.

I want to do the same swap on my 96 dodge van. They are nearly identical to the rams for wiring etc. I’m waiting to find the right trans as well because I want my speedo and cruise to work

@@Chuck_House_of_Mopar they made them with 4 speeds prior to 93. Should be fun adapting hydraulic clutch stuff to a vehicle that never had it
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar

Might not be too big of a problem. Last I knew, Rock Auto had the hydraulic setup. Look up clutch master and slave cylinder assembly.

Do you know if the dodge V6 5 speed is the same as the V8 5 speed trans? I have an automatic on my 97 1500 and a friend gave me a v6-5 speed combo he pulled out of his 96 1500. I would love to swap mine like you’re doing to yours. Thanks man, great job on the videos
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar 7 месяцев назад
I thought that it would probably work and then I found this online. All A, LA and Magnum (V6 or V8) transmission bolt patterns are the same (where they attach to the block). The problem could end up being the trans mount to the crossmember. They're different for automatic and manual. Something can always be fabbed up I'm sure.

When your pilot bearing didn't what did you do? I'm switching one on a 03 and the books tell me the pilot bearings are all the same but it look like it's exactly the same size. And it won't go in the crankshaft
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar Год назад
I had to rewatch the video. I think that I was able to get one at the local AutoZone that day. It happens to be the same one that goes into our Muscle cars as well. I wouldn't think that an '03 would be different but who knows. Rock Auto bearing ... NATIONAL FC69907 Includes Bearing Sleeve Repair Kit AutoZone bearing ... Duralast Bearing FC69907 Hope this helped.

@Chuck_House_of_Mopar

In the end, yes I'm very happy that I did it. Make sure that you collect all of the parts that you can't buy before hand though. I believe that the clutch/brake pedals from all years work just fine. But in 1998, I believe, they changed the way that the clutch master cylinder connects to the bracketry. 1997 and earlier clutch master twisted in like mine. I believe later ones used a clip of some sort. Just know what you have and order the correct hydraulics for that year.

@@Chuck_House_of_Mopar I know this was posted 8 months ago but I gonna try anyway. I have 97 4x4 and I want to manual swap mine. My Question is do you need a wiring harness out of a manual truck or does the harness from the automatic work with the manual
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar Год назад
@@isaakteichroeb1175 The automatic works with the manual. There is a switch for a 4 speed that goes onto the clutch pedal and your auto truck should have the plug hanging right there by the pedal. 1997 and older used a speedo gear for the speedometer where the 1998 and newer use the rear axle. There's no provision for the speedo gear on a 1998 and newer transmission.

I got a question how did you bypass the park/neutral safety switch? I've been having problems with mine I grounded the wire and works but from cranking it gets got and won't turn the truck back on until it cools back down and tips or ideas I should do?
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar Год назад
If I remember correctly, I got a pigtail for a manual trans park switch. If I'm correct, it only has 2 pins where the auto trans has 3. I can't remember if I had to ground one of the wires or not.

Hey I might be purchasing a parts truck with a 5 speed this weekend, same year as mine but the only difference is that it's a 3.9 V6. in your opinion will the wiring harness be very different?
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar Год назад
I didn't change the harness although I picked one up off a truck in the JY. You end up having a couple of extra plugs hanging down there but I just taped them and then zipped tied them up.

@@Chuck_House_of_Mopar Alright cool. after the swap you mentioned the computer might die because it's used to the automatic torque converter, was this ever an issue? and did you ever resolve the check engine light being on?

I did the swap on my 97 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 magnum with the NV3500 transmission from a 95 my only problem is my speedometer doesn't work and I don't know what to do. Any suggestions?
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar Год назад
Well maybe. If you used a later model NV3500 ('98 and up) there is no provision for the speedo drive on the transmission. The later trucks got the speedo signal from the rear differential. Does your trans have the speedo hookup on the driverside rear of the transmission?

What flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate did you use? I’ve got a 74 d100 I’m planning on putting a 5.9 and 5 speed behind
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar
@Chuck_House_of_Mopar 7 месяцев назад
I bought everything from Rock Auto, nothing special. I got the hydraulic slave cylinder from there as well. I had kept the flywheel and pressure plate bolts from the truck that I harvested. Give Brewers Performance a call as well. They have everything that you need but it will probably be a little more expensive than RA.

The 360 Magnum is externally balanced, so make sure to get a flywheel for a 5.9 Magnum. The flywheel for a 5.3 Magnum will cause a bad vibration as the engine will be unbalanced. I have a 2001 Dodge Ram Quadcab with a 5.9 Magnum V8 and an NV3500. The truck was built with a 5.2L but somewhere along the way the engine was swapped. Whoever did the swap did it correctly and the truck is smooth as can be.
