Today I will take you shopping inThailand's best supermarket in 2023 and show you Bangkok cost of living. Join me as I head to Lotus supermarket to do shopping for some bare necessities and food. I will walk you down many isles and show you prices on dozens of items so you can compare the cost of living in bangkok in 2023 to your country. Lotus is a huge supermarket, much like WalMart. They have everything from clothes, to furniture to toilet paper, and of course pre packed and fresh food. You can find pretty much everything you need for your home at one of Thailand’s best supermarkets here in Bangkok. Many things are much cheaper than you would find in most stores in a western country. However, any item that is imported is of course much more expensive here. I will show you items with prices for: food, hair and body care, snacks, beverages, fresh meat, vegetables, fruit, eggs, bread, personal hygiene products, chicken, fish, pork and so much more. This is a comprehensive Thailand supermarket tour with prices.

In the past when Thailand didn't have the modern toothpaste, some people used salt to brush their teeth and gum, and their oral health is better than people who didn't use salt. So some modern toothpaste in Thailand have salt in it. Also, herb toothpaste is becoming trendy in Thailand for less than 10 years but it consists of many herbs so the taste may not be pleasant.

Surprisingly I found Big C, Lotus and Makro to only be ever so slightly cheaper for my grocery needs than a US grocery store. It's much cheaper to buy food at local markets. That's my experience on an island though in Koh Samui so there may be a mark up compared to the mainland. Oh and they have HUGE isles of cooking oil which makes sense
@LifewithSerg
@LifewithSerg Год назад
Yeah, Brian, things on Koh Samui are definitely more expensive because everything has to be brought over to the island. I think one of the things I maybe didn’t mention, or a lot of people missed, is that I only go to the supermarkets once every three or four months to pick up some basic necessities, like shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toilet paper, etc. There are much much cheaper local options for every day food of course.

New subscriber. I enjoyed the video. It was intersting to see how much higher things are in Bangkok versus where my farm is in Maha Sarakham. And as you mentioned many times in the comments, there are cheaper markets for most local foods than Lotus's and Big C. I go there only when I need something that isn't usually available in the markets closer to the farm. Granted, imported anything is going to be more expensive due to import/export taxes and fees. And since their market for many of these items is small, the cost per item is more as well. if you want to live in another country, but eat like you did where you came from, expect to pay a premium. The same applies in America for many imported items.I paid far more for Thai Jasmine rice in Colorado than what Lotus's charges! LOL I know you know this, but for those that maybe haven't been to Thailand - If you want to eat cheaper, go Thai! Many local Thai products are just as good, or even better, than what you might have had 'back home'. Some are owned by the same corporations you may have used before, just relabeled, and priced, for the Thai market. Thailand abounds with award winning culinary experiences. Explore the possibilities, and save a few baht in the process!
@LifewithSerg
@LifewithSerg Год назад
You are absolutely correct Richard. I only come to a market like this when I need something specific. Usually every three or four months because I like certain toilet paper, etc. Otherwise, I buy food and everything else in local Thai markets. I definitely did not move to Thailand to live like a western art. It defeats the purpose. Thank you so much for making all those great points!

Wow, i am very shocked about the prices - i have the feeling here in Germany we pay less for most of the stuff that you got - especially given the salary differences from Germany's average to Thailand. I wonder what Thai people buy... Would be interesting to see what an average thai would buy/ where they would buy their daily necessities - must be in the outside markets...Interestingly enough in Germany outside markets ( open air) are more pricy than supermarkets xD

This is not where most tow people shop. The prices here are definitely higher. I’ll have to make a video to show you the prices at places where most Thai propel shop. Total cost of living here is 1/3 of what you would pay in Germany.

Loved this video. I tried to keep up with you in converting prices to Aussie dollars and also working back from US dollars. It seems that some items there are on a par with Aussie prices. I worry, then, for the average Thai person because although the prices look okay with me they must be very high for a local consumer. Nice to see Aussie products on the shelves, like Bega cheeses, Aussie wines and such. Australia has a free trade agreement with Thailand so we see Thai products here quite a bit (like cleaning products). I'd love to see you do a walking tour of the night markets and especially the fake markets.

This is definitely not a store, where a lot of average Thai people shop. Or at least they’re only coming here for certain items, as it is quite expensive by Thai standards. I’ve done a couple of night market videos in the past. The sellers of the fake markets typically are very adamant that you don’t record them, and it’s just not quite the content I’m interested in making.

Hi. “Thai whiskeys” are NOT whiskeys. This is because they are not distilled from grains but rather are made from cane sugar or molasses. Thus, they should be considered RUM rather than whiskey. Bars and nightclubs in Thailand would have it right as they usually serve Thai liquor with Coke. (Think Rum & Coke)
@LifewithSerg

You are very much correct. I’ve tried several of them, and they definitely have more room flavor. I’m just used to everyone’s you’re calling the whiskey.

Thats common in SE Asia, they add chemical flavouring and hope for the best. Rhum is made from the same liquor and also have chemical flavor added. Anyway theres no need to buy any of them, imported whisky isnt too expensive unless youre drinking heavily daily. .

Sangsom at least says it's Rum on the bottle. However, all the bars and restaurants list it as whiskey. I was on my 30th or so bottle before I finally realized this. It's terrible straight, but I love it with coke.
