Shore Fishing for Salmon | Catching Coho / Silver Salmon on Spinners in Oregon

Spent Labor Day Weekend at the Oregon Coast where we did some fishing and crabbing. Everything we did was from shore. In 2 days of casting spinners for coho, we hooked 6, landed 2 and kept 1. We had to use barbless single hooks, which makes landing coho very difficult since they are usually quite acrobatic. Hope you enjoy this video. Take care everyone.

River Right Outdoors - barbless hooks are tough with coho because they are so acrobatic, it’s not as bad with chinook. But I would still prefer using a barbed siwash hook.

Just saw this video. One of these days I will make it up there to fish from the beach. Those Yakima Bait 3.0 Spinfish stuffed with tuna worked great last year for coho casting in the bays. Haven't tried this year yet, but hope to.
@NorthwestOpenSeason
@NorthwestOpenSeason 2 года назад
I’ve wondered if casting spinfish or brads cutplugs from shore would produce. Do you add a weight or are they heavy enough to cast as is?
@stevepreston7030
@stevepreston7030 2 года назад
@@NorthwestOpenSeason I add 1.5 oz banana weight about 24" above the lure. I do change my hooks to 5/0 double hook setup. I got them trolling the bays too behind a 360 flasher. In two years, I have landed 2 Chinook and about 8 coho. Of course I couldn't keep but 1 coho, because they are wild. Hopefully they will let us keep wild coho in the bay this year. I fish mainly Siletz Bay, Nestucca Bay, and Columbia between Portland and St. Helen's for fall. Occasionally Tillamook Bay, but haven't for several years.

I'm a little confused here bro... if you were fishing the 4th & 5th, it was non-selective and unclipped fish could be retained. ???? One of the tricks to landing Coho with barbless hooks is to loosen the drag after the hook up and let them run and get tired while just keeping light tension on them, just try to keep up with the slack and feel the fish. They are very acrobatic and if you try to reel them in, you'll lose the majority of them. Try it my way and you'll be landing more fish than you lose. Thanks for the vid, I didn't make it out and missed out on some hot fishing... KS PS: Switch to Octopus hooks and sharpen them up... Not sharp enough out of the package... No hooks are....
@NorthwestOpenSeason
@NorthwestOpenSeason 4 года назад
There was a 2 day opening for chinook on the Columbia in that area and you could keep anything, coho is hatchery only. I usually keep my drag pretty loose, as you can hear on my hook sets, but maybe need to go lighter yet. I have tried octopus, sickle siwash, straight siwash, all sorts of hooks. I actually like using a single hook with spinners, but not barbless. The only thing I didn’t do this time that I normally do is add a barrel swivel to allow it to spin more freely. Thanks for the tips though, definitely appreciate your insight.
@kingslew1866
@kingslew1866 4 года назад
@@NorthwestOpenSeason Right! Drag is too heavy! You're fighting the fish. Let it have it's head. The way to wear a Salmon out is to let it run. That keeps them head down and pulling away. Instead of head up (to you) and flopping and fighting. I watch you in the river and you are too aggressive with them. You want to bring them in when they are still green. Let the fish do the work. Just stay engaged... Cheers! Luv you bro...

@stevet8121 4 года назад
@@kingslew1866 Great advice. I struggled with that too. Just because a fish is taking line doesn't mean it's getting away. I had to learn to be patient. I learned on steelhead though. The only exception is if you're bank fishing and you can't afford to let a fish get into fast water or someplace you can't follow. Then you have to use as large a hook as you can get away with and pray.
@kingslew1866
@kingslew1866 4 года назад

I just a tip suggestion those kind of hooks your using you tend to want to kind of bend them off to the side a bit. Also if I were you I'd rather use a barbless circle hook a little bit harder to lose a fish.
@NorthwestOpenSeason
@NorthwestOpenSeason 4 года назад
rogelio salazar - I put a bend in the hook originally when I lost the first fish, and then I straightened it back out. I think adding a barrel swivel can help too. I’ve never tried a circle hook on a spinner, but I will consider that in the future, thanks for the tip!

I have been considering trying my luck for coho on the shore. Do you just pick any beach? Or do you need to fish close to the mouth of bays? Thanks!
@NorthwestOpenSeason
@NorthwestOpenSeason 16 дней назад
Either. But If you pick something outside a bay, you have to check ocean regulations and it’s not always open. If you go inside the bay, you check the regs for that particular bay/river.
@BreakingIntoData

@@NorthwestOpenSeason Appreciate the advice. Do you think it would be more productive to stick to the bays? I couldn't quite tell if you were in a bay or on the beach. Ideally I could just hit the beach since there is so much open area but at least in the bays I wouldn't have to replace my hooks on my spinners :)

I wonder if the squid skirt might have had a negative impact upon hook penetration.
@NorthwestOpenSeason
@NorthwestOpenSeason 4 года назад
Kevin Bushnell - Possibly... But I use siwash hooks with these spinners a lot and don’t have the same problem with barbs. Some times I will add a barrel swivel, but that really drops the hook back pretty far.
@Exploer8591
@Exploer8591 4 года назад
@@NorthwestOpenSeason I was thinking that maybe moving the hook back a little might help, or, using a spinner that doesn't have the hoochie, such as a Blue Fox. Those Squid Stingers are hard to beat though. What I've found to be the most effective for keeping barbless hooks in is a bungee; although, I have no idea how one might incorporate a bungee into shore casting spinners. Using bungees, when fishing barbless hooks, has more than doubled my catch rate. Maybe someone will see this and invent a spinner with a built in shock absorber. 🤔 Great video! Thanks for the inspiration!
@NorthwestOpenSeason
@NorthwestOpenSeason 4 года назад
Kevin Bushnell - interesting concept. I love these spinners and I have more success with them than others, so I will stick with them. I’m intrigued by the idea of a snubber system for the hook, might have to look into that a little.

@NorthwestOpenSeason
@NorthwestOpenSeason 4 года назад
carl astoria - I haven’t tried barbless trebles yet. I’ve heard that coho can throw those easier, but I can’t prove that. Maybe some day I will give it a go. Do you have experience/recommendations for barbless trebles?
@ab-kv1ui
@ab-kv1ui 4 года назад
@@NorthwestOpenSeason I use mustad 3551 BR 3/0 which comes stock at the 9/16 max gap requirement. Then I pinch the barb and w pliers bend the hooks slightly inward. I also use the owner stinger 3/0 trebles and do the same. The stingers are slightly more hardened than the mustad and thus not as pliable. More care is needed when bending inward. I carry a hook sharpener and keep the hooks touched up. I replace the hooks when I touch them up too much over time. My hook up ratio to landing fish is about 50% to 66%. In other words half to 2/3 of hookups are landed. This all strictly spinner fishing. I play the fish with looser drag like others here recommend. I am intrigued with trying circle owner hooks next season at ft Stevens. I think that might be a better ticket.

Coty Parker - All of the Oregon coast rivers and bays should be open for fall salmon until Dec 31. You need a fishing license and combined angling tag. Each bay has different regulations though for what you can keep, so make sure you look at ODFWs website first. The Columbia has a different set of regs that changes all the time, and you have to look each day before you go. Good luck and be safe out there.
