SHORT Island Runway - Florida’s Tiniest Airport

Today Caralyn and I are flying my little Vans RV-12 over to Cedar Key's George T Lewis Airport. This runway is the shortest public paved runway in Florida, and there have been many accidents, incidents, and crashes with airplanes landing here. Depending on which direction you land, the runway is 1600 to 1800 feet long. End to end the runway is 2300 ft long. A STOL airplane will have no issue here, and most general aviation aircraft can fly from here - as long as the pilot is careful.
For more information on flying in visit:
www.cedarkeyairport.org
We rented a golf cart and went for lunch in the beautiful town center. This is my favorite airport to visit here in Florida. I highly recommend a visit.

Cool airport and a nice approach and landing. I remember you landing here in a C150 as well. Enjoyed the video. Take care and blue skies and tailwinds always.

I landed my Bonanza with 4 people in 1980. Great strip and great diner as well. Probably took a little longer than usual on takeoff with 4 full bellies. 😅

I've landed and took off from this airport in my C172, it was fun. Merritt Island Airport (COI) is also a fun small airport to land and take off from.

Yes I totally agree, I did a lot of approaches into Merritt island prepping for the IFR rating. Beautiful and busy little airport

I'm a denizen of the Great North, though translated far enough south that I enjoy looking for my house during your launch/landings. The secret to warmth is wool. Socks are #1 because that's the first extremity the body cuts off to stay warm. 2nd, equally or more important is Navy watch cap because that's the anatomy the feet were cut off to keep warm. Next is a scarf wrapped around the neck and crossed over the chest. Cashmere is super soft. The cap and scarves you could keep a couple of spares in the plane for when they're *needed*. Driving gloves are also good especially working outside grabbing cold metal and hauling the plane around.

Small world! That will be very helpful to have another RV-12 owner to chat with. I will be busy for a couple weeks but the last week in February and first week in March I will be spending some time at the hangar with the plane. I am looking forward to joining the EAA chapter and meeting others. Thank you for being so welcoming. -Pedro

Great video. After seeing this I wish I had setup some camera’s. I the same flight in the Seminole on Feb 5th. It was absolutely stunning and now I wish we had more time and had gone into the town and not just take photos and leave. Love X04 as well an amazing Airpark, something here in Australia we can only dream of.

Random RU-vid algorithm suggest this video and lo and behold to my surprise the “real” airport nearest my house (although Seminole lake gliderport is much closer). Neat to see! Never actually been to Orlando Apopka. Been by it on 441 never to it. I should fix that.

Got my private last year in September and have flown into lots of short/grass strips. This is definitely on my list once the Florida heat calms down! Any tips? My dad has been here a couple times but I'd love to fly in for a couple hours with my girlfriend.

Hi Pedro, Nice video as usual. Don't let your rudder swing in the wind against the stops. It will crease the rudder at the bottom. I use a red shop rag or a piece of pool noodle slid under the rudder to keep it from moving in the wind. I look forward to meeting you at Dunn. Jack
@FloridaFlying
@FloridaFlying Год назад
Hi Jack, yeah as soon as I saw what was happening I turned the plane into the wind and that solved it for the time being. It pained me to see that… I like your idea of the shop rag or pool noodle, thank you. I actually just moved my plane there today. The first week of March I’ll be doing some of the recent service bulletins

If you can't land a typical airplane on 2300ft, you shouldn't have a license.

Hey dude unless the regulations have changed aren't you supposed to identify yourself as a experimental and not RV come on man I could be wrong but I don't think so God bless Nice looking airplane
@JWH-01
@JWH-01 Год назад
I don't know the text book answer, I will say that RV is more useful than experimental. It give me a hint as to how fast it is.
@christophergagliano2051
@christophergagliano2051 Год назад
@@JWH-01 Hi John I think the regulations are more for ATC to know what's in the pattern also if you look at the air where this limitations issued at the time of air with us approval it might also state that the aircraft must be identified as experimental I know that's true for experimental aircraft operating under the various categories : research and development show compliance and light sport experimental again that was The regulations when I was acting as a DAR
@FloridaFlying
@FloridaFlying Год назад
I am not sure honestly. I have heard many pilots using “RV” in their calls. It rolls off the tongue better, but I will look into that. Thank you!
@christophergagliano2051
@christophergagliano2051 Год назад
@@FloridaFlying Yes many pilots do the wrong thing and repeat other people's mistakes please don't be one of those. Now the reason ATC would like to know the status identification of your aircraft is the accident rate for experimental aircraft is almost three times that of general aviation aircraft it's very simple ATC wants to know who to keep an eye on God bless
@JWH-01
@JWH-01 Год назад
@@christophergagliano2051 I fly mostly into airports without control towers. When I hear "RV" I know that it is probably faster than my Cessna. Someone saying "experimental" tells me nothing. It could be an experimental jet or a homebuilt Piper Cub equivalent. I appreciate your post because that is a regulation we should know. I have homework to do!
