We are going to learn how to manual, and we are going to take a giant shortcut - trials style! In order to do this bike tip properly, we need to simulate a downhill street or driveway setup, which requires a new feature for the Shred Spot!
Evan came in to help me build a ramp, which opened up all sorts of new possibilities for the space. Big thanks to Teracis for naming the ramp, and also thank you to my Primer Gremlins for their help with the painting!
The hardest part of a manual is holding the balance point as you coast along - but if you're just starting to work on them, how do you know WHAT the balance point feels like? All the times you've pulled up on the handlebars, do you actually know what success will feel like?
In this trials style method, we'll cut directly to the actual body and bike position, which gives you about 95% of what you need to be able to manual. Now that you know what it feels like to be on top of your balance point, it's WAY easier to find that spot when you lift up the front wheel. Knowing what it should feel like will shortcut your learning time when it comes to locking in manuals for the long haul.
If you haven't already learned how to hop on your back wheel, check out this video now: • Back Hops + Turning On...

some tips: 1- dont use your front brakes, it's easier to balance sideways w/ the front wheel spinning. 2- dont bend your elbows, bend your knees and try to almost sit on the back tire, that will give you more room to balance since the balance point will move a litle bit down. 3. as you progress, you will see you do not even need your brakes, the real manual is without the brakes, just balancing w your body. but be carefull, in long manuals your legs are going to burn, stop the manual before they fail 🤣. (not that i know everything but what i know so far is this and jus wanted to share so i can see more people manualing around) I hope that those tips help you guys and sorry for the bad english, im improving it.

The only times I managed to manual was while riding down slopes with a bit of speed. I just moved my hips back energetically and bam the front wheel lifted for a decent amount of time. It was really cool and I was actually surprised it worked. You need to shift your weight from the front to the back of the bike by moving your body back in a very smooth and sudden way. I'm still struggling to really automate the move. Be sure to have your fingers on the rear brake lever. The couple times I managed to do it was on an old 27,5 hardtail, now I'm struggling to even lift the front wheel with my new 29er. I find wheelies are easier with the bigger wheels though. A trade off I guess.

@@SuperRiderTV everything helps, but still working on my back hops. At most i can hop 4 times in a row, then i lose it. At worst, and often, i loop out or am just off balance quickly. I'm determined to get the hops down bc i feel after that, everything will start to happen
@SuperRiderTV

Agreed! That stability on the back wheel makes it all a lot easier to build from, practice makes progress!! 👊

Hey there little red riding ramp! Ramp doesn't quite fit the song but it definitely fits the shred spot. Cheers for the call out, I've already been doing some manual practice using this technique after your preview on twitch and it's helping, I'm sure it'd help more if I already had back hops locked in, though it's equally helping with those as well!

Thanks so much for all the tips, great channel! Here’s a question, I just bought a trials bike, it’s so awesome! But suddenly I can’t manual or bunnyhop anymore like on my mtb. Is it normal having this issue with the trials bike? On the other hand the pedal kick is much easier, but lifting my front wheel just by switching weight, with the almost zero compression available…any suggestion?
@SuperRiderTV
@SuperRiderTV 5 месяцев назад
Did you get a competition trials bike? If so, completely normal to struggle with Bunnyhops and manuals, since the bike is likely a lot longer and lower. You’re in a different body position on the bike, but it sounds like you’re already seeing the trade-offs!
@hugovallee-pouliot2181

Yeah, it's a used classic 90's comp bike with no saddle, my friend and I went all-in for the style! It does feel very long but like you say practice makes perfect and I don't think there's any secret in the end, just a few more hours on it with make things happen. The day I can bunnyhop to back wheel on it will make things really interesting on my mtb and unlock so much. Thanks for the reply! Cheers!

This is all assuming you can already bounce on your back wheel, which I'm guessing your average mountain biker can't.
@SuperRiderTV
@SuperRiderTV Год назад
They can if they watch this channel :) But honestly, this is just another approach to it, no hopping required, just enough skill use pedal pressure to bring the front wheel up in a static position.
