Police in Boston have used ShotSpotter technology since 2007 to notify them when and where gunshots ring out. SoundThinking, the company behind ShotSpotter, has acoustic sensors that are placed around the city - which the company argues help police detect and respond quickly to shootings even if no one makes a 911 call.
With Boston's ShotSpotter contract up for renewal in June, a new report from the ACLU of Massachusetts makes the case that it's an unreliable technology and calls for the city to move on. The ACLU's analysis of more than 1,300 Boston police reports found nearly 70% of ShotSpotter alerts yielded no evidence of shots fired.
Kade Crockford, director of the Technology for Liberty Project at the ACLU of Massachusetts, and Tom Chittum, SoundThinking's senior vice president of Analytics and Forensic Services, join Katie Lannan to discuss ShotSpotter's role and impacts in Boston.

I work in a large city with ShotSpotter. We respond to countless alerts a day as a department. I will say from my experience, ShotSpotter has led us to critical evidence and saved countless victims who would have otherwise not had instantaneous police response. On every shooting that has occurred in ShotSpotter range while I was working, not one 911 call has hit our board before ShotSpotter has alerted to the shooting. I think the statistic provided in this does not accurately reflect all of ShotSpotters customers. My department has made it mandatory for us to respond to ShotSpotter alerts and thoroughly check the area for ballistic evidence. Not to mention the ever growing ballistic analysis technology that can link ballistic evidence to individual firearms which assists in prosecuting offenders who are caught with them. This technology is absolutely invaluable as a police officer in an ever shrinking police force. I wish it was everywhere.
