I saw this video yesterday, and went to the alley and tried some shots. It was kinda fun. Today I went to the alley, I bowled my normal shot and averaged about 172 for 5 games. Pretty decent for me. On a whim I decided to bowl a full game using the back up ball style. First game 203, second game 200 with an open in the tenth. Third game 224. My ball speed bowling normal is about 15, using the back up ball it was 17 without effort. It was so simple. Like I was made for it. A little flick of the wrist, no cranking my hand trying to get more hook, it was just so natural. My arm isn't tired, my wrist doesn't ache. I love it. I won't be going back to "normal". I am sure this is not normal for most bowlers. But it sure fits me.

I bowled backup back when it didn't have a name. Then I learned the other way, and haven't been able to bowl backup since, but I do miss having the ability to pick up tough spares from the opposite angles, or switching to fresh lane surface when there are no lefties on the lanes and you have been through the bag and everyone is struggling.

I've thrown a back up my whole life because it's comfortable and I get more revs than bowling like a normal right handed bowler. Many have told me I need to learn to bowl like a normal right hander if I wanna get better but my arm naturally goes the back up way. I ride the left gutter and it breaks right into the pocket sometimes I start in the middle and aim for the center arrow and it still breaks into the pocket! Why should I learn to bowl the normal way when back up is so comfortable?

My daughter is hyperflexible and throws a back up. But this creates am unnatural strain that resulted in a server sprain in her hand that took months to heal. Throwing a ball up for an opposite hand split can be effective. But in the long run, it can do more physical harm.

There's a huge difference between a thumb in and thumb out bowler throwing a backup ball. It becomes extremely difficult to play certain angles/lines etc. throwing backup with your thumb in the ball (due to having to clear the thumb) which is a must when bowling longer formats and on more challenging oil conditions. On a house shot you can do whatever because the lanes are usually extremely forgiving.

I wish this video included two topics: 1. Use of backup on spare shots when a "conventional" delivery is used for strikes. 2. For bowlers who do backup, do they switch to a ball with a layout or weight setup conducive to backing up? Or, do they use an existing ball? I'd like to think that a ball set up for backup deliveries would increase the repeatability, the one thing mentioned in this video that I felt was important.

The video doesn't address the title at all. It just showed a guy bowling backup for a few shots, and then ... that's it.

@@marshallkennebrew847 Saying "it doesn't matter how you throw it" isn't an answer. A thorough discussion of this question would bring up the advantages of playing each side of the lane, and what (if any) complications arise from doing so. For instance, right now, USBC requires that two-handed bowlers mark their drilled balls with an X where their palm will rest so they can't have a single ball with two layouts on it. Well, doesn't throwing a backup ball with the same holes basically accomplish the same thing? There's a lot to unpack on this topic, and they did absolutely none of it.
@Fejix87
@Fejix87 2 года назад
@@Jackal_Blitz As a 2 hander that loves throwing a backup ball it really doesn't. I've used the triangle layout previously before the rule change where you're actually rotating to a different part of the ball. When you throw it backup my ball actually tracks nearly in the same spot as a regular shot (just to the left of my fingers). When a left hander throws their ball it tracks to the right of their fingers normally. So my ball rolls in the same orientation (x stays in my palm) and tracks along the same spot. It it just a big change in axis rotation and not really any different to a bowler changing their shot to roll a spare end over end.

The question was answered. Just not to the extent you want. As was said doesn't matter how you through it. As long as it's repeatible

Nothing gets into a lefties head more than going backup ball on them. For even greater effect I can pull out my purple hammer and urethane up their line. It's also a great tool when the right gets cliffed or becomes a sahara and I can just switch to bowling the other side like it's a different line. I have gotten really lazy on spares where I just backup ball across the lane at the 10 in league like I hook at my 7 pins.

I was trying to learn how to throw the ball straight, but weakening my hand position created a natural backup for me. So instead of forcing myself to learn straight, I've now used the backup ball to go after most spares. It's straighter and faster with a slight backup using a spare ball.
@myguymonolo101
@myguymonolo101 Год назад
I have a friend who did that. He only recently learned how to hook without backup, I heard it’s been going well for him.
@clutchturkey5781
@clutchturkey5781 Год назад
@@myguymonolo101 I do actually hook the ball the normal way on my Strike Ball. 🙂 But now having the backup ball gives me a better entry angle on the 6 or 10, and splits like the 5-10 or 2-10 or 3-10.

Due to how I hold the ball a back up ball would be very awkward, see if you can tell how I hold the ball, 12 shorts to look at.

Newbie question: What is a “backup ball”?
@brandonschobert1120
@brandonschobert1120 2 года назад
Normally, a right handed bowler will throw it to the right and it curve back left. A backup will curve the opposite direction. Throw to the left and it curves back right.

I actually asked if they could have more back up videos cuz noone posts any! There's alot u could learn but I guess according to this video consistency is the key just as it is with normal right handed releases or even 2 handed releases
