The report that Minister Sajjan prioritized Afghan Sikhs over Canadians for evacuation has rekindled debate about foreign-born politicians. But where they are born matters less than the process that brings them to elected office.

A naturalized Canadian running for political office should not hold citizenship of another country/countries.

Quality of politicians has deteriorated all over the world. Intelligentsia should roll up their sleeves, hold their heads, and devise something better to get rid of the rotten system.

It would be a great error to limit office holders to Canadian born citizens. That us not the problem. The political party system has nothing to do with democracy and is destroying our system of governance. They will put forward candidates that will hopefully win elections, not those with the best qualifications to be part of the government.

Hi Darshan. Its always a treat to listen to your analysis on these issues. Your perspective is quite unique and enlightening. What I really like about your comments is HOW you approach these issues. The process of thinking / analysis. Its critical yet not robotic. Its conceptually creative while being eloquent. How do you manage to strike such a fine balance ? Could you please recommend me some books that would help me build these skills ? Always looking forward for more videos from you. Please don't ever stop making them 😄😄

Hi @DarshanMaharaja I think that foreign born Canadian citizens should be allowed to hold public office if they have spent over 20 years in the country and do not have dual citizenship. That was raised by True North recently. It is also grand hypocrisy for liberal politicians to criticise India's CAA and then turn around and do what the minister did w.r.t Afghanistan. Live up to the example you want to set.

What he did was horrible but he also slipped in something about rescuing 'hindus' at the end while making his statement. For a khalistani who keep blaming hindus for all their problems, thats very hideous. He is a crook too who doesnt say what he means/meant

It is good presentation, it focuses a lot on examples about questionable loyalties of many politicians and that loyalty is indeed viewed very differently according to one's value system that may be opposed or closed to who the politician is. This is short on what is meant to fixing the process of bringing in good politicians and that may well warrant other discussions but those tend to be a bit abstract or difficult to change: role of party discipline, genuine opposition during office, transparency of government and accountability, representation at local level versus having some representation with a list by party according to total popular vote. Local representation may exacerbate tribal effect whereas broad based representation could potentially give more representation to aboriginal people for example assuming they would want to form a national political party. Stated differently some ethnic or cultural groups may concentrate more in well defined areas whereas others may disseminate far more evenly across the country.

Take any immigrant/refugee who has been in Canada 25+ years and owns a successful small to medium size business, put this person in gov't and they will bring more common sense and proper leadership than most Canadian born politicians in power today. Yes, immigrants should be allowed to hold elected office. As you stated, it's the process that needs to be fixed.

According to Elections Canada, you only have to be a Canadian citizen to run for an elected position. Four of Canada's prime ministers have been born outside Canada: John A. Macdonald (born Glasgow), Alexander Mackenzie (born Scotland), Mackenzie Bowell (born England), and John Turner born UK). I would just like them to be scrutinized more prior to running. I don't know why this has become an issue except for those trying to destroy our country.

Well, if the PMs you mention were kids when they arrived in Canada, that can be a huge differentiator. It matters if you were pre-adolescent/mid-adolescent as an immigrant or came when your ideas and cultural identity was largely formed (late adolescence, adult). Secondly, it matters how different your cultural background is from the mainstream. Also, contemporary immigrants are almost completely different in attitude from ones from 20th century and before. The entitled attitude is off the charts. Every single immigrant who I know from the past worked their way and don't bitchabout having had the hardship to earn their way thru life. The ones now are takers and gimme and don't giveashit about the country they come to. In fact, what it never even crosses their mind building and maintaining a community/society/country isn't just about YOU and your pocketbook at the expense of your neighbor.

I think you are on the right track - it is not the individual we need to vet, it is the process. I don't oppose foreign born elected officials. But I do think that they should be vetted more thoroughly for the multi-political pitfalls. If they have a clear public bias, and actions that show them engaging in foreign politics, this is a red flag and maybe they are not the right fit for public office. When you take that oath of office, it is a big deal and you better make sure that you can follow through on it. If you can't do that, don't run for office. Maybe this is dealt with when we start holding public officials accountable. Foreign interference, corruption, fraud... you go to jail. There is your deterrent and incentive to take your oath of office seriously. The problem is with our system - our system does not hold itself accountable.
