If they want to encourage BEV purchases, find a way to massively reduce the cost of public chargers and increase their accessibility.

But as a typical EV owner/user, the cost of public charging isn't a huge factor for me personally. I've not used a public charger for over a year now. The RAC carried out a study, which concluded that around 65% of EV owners tend to charge at home on cheaper off-peak rates 90% of the time. For many EV owners, public charging is looked upon as the same as buying petrol on motorway service stations, being something you only do if you absolutely *need* to. The average UK motorists's motorway journey is 70 to 80 miles, with much longer trips being only a once or twice a year event. In any case, if you do need to use public charging regularly, then the best thing to do is to take out a subscription to the charge network you want to use, as this can reduce charging costs by some margin. Of course non-subscribers pay the full price. My local public charge network is priced at 38p per kwh, if you use one of the 3 subscription rates they offer.....

The problem with increasing the EV adoption is not the owners who already have one and can charge at home, it’s the millions of people like me who drive a petrol car and cannot charge at home. My petrol car at the moment costs me 14p per mile around town and 12.5 on a longer journey, travelling at 80 mph on a motorway. To use the public chargers in my local town costs a minimum of 69 pence per kWh, and up to 90 pence at the most expensive public charger. That works out to be up to 30 pence per mile on the most expensive charger. Until public charging costs me less per mile than my 2.0 litre petrol estate car I will not even consider an EV.@@Brian-om2hh

Think the slowdown in EV sales is down to the massive increase in cost of public charging. That and newspaper fud.

Nope. The vast majority of EV owners charge at home 90% of the time. I haven't used a public charger for over a year. I've had no need to.....

@@johnbow100 you don't have to buy new. Big difference in the last four years, there are decent long range EVs getting into the second hand market. They can't simultaneously depreciate horrendously and be too expensive. (They depreciate the same as other cars but unlike most "prestige" cars haven't got horrendous running costs - provided you can charge at home).

@@Brian-om2hh but until you own one you don't make that connection, or realise what EV tariffs you can get. Cost of public charging hurts people buying EVs in cities, and a lot of people in rural areas still think they're city cars.

I think you are spot on with vat considerations, it wouldn’t benefit the ordinary private buyer. As for electric scooters & motorbikes it’s just a big NO. Whilst I’ve had an EV for 3 years and love it, I’ve been a biker for 47 years and will not ever buy an electric motorcycle. There’s more than noise, it’s about the engine which is a thing of beauty and the experience of sitting on top of a throbbing mechanical being. Everyone to their own but not for me, they range would need massive improvements too

Here is one for your soapbox. Moray Council in Elgin have decided that the publicly accessible chargepoints in their open Pay & Display car park beside their offices, complete with customer friendly pricing badges per kWh, are ONLY to be used by council pool cars. The car park is split in 2 with a barrier for the staff section. The chargepoints stradle a dividing kerb between a 12 bay bank of painted EV bays each on both the public side and staff side. Both however have painted "Pool Cars Only". Also signs up on the public side. Reports on Zapmap of point on the public side being filled with ICE pool cars despite the staff side being deserted. A shame given that the area isn't well served by AC, this being the largest site. Public funds paying for points that cant be used by all, despite being in a public space seems wrong to me. Same would go if paid for by grants, still from the public purse.

This might be their reaction to new rules about public chargers needing contactless payment facilities. I'd expect more of this on older council owned CPS chargers rather than paying for them to comply with upcoming UK legislation for public chargers.

Seems likely to me that they were struggling to find available chargers for their pool cars so locked out the public. Imagine the embarrassment of having a fleet of vehicles that sit idle because they can't be changed.

@@the_lost_navigator7266 then price the general public out to discourage use. The money from running them, goes straight back to their coffers anyway so they’re not pricing themselves out. The point is they’re trying to make them completely unavailable to the general public despite being publicly accessible. Not sure where the grant rules stand if they happen to have been used to procure.

@@salibaba I agree it is wrong what they are doing, but they just put prices up, desperate drivers will still use them. If I pull into a charger with 1 mile of range left and it's 3 pounds per kWh, I'm paying 3 pounds per kWh (no other choice).

In answer to your video title, a resounding NO. Why should VAT be cut on electric cars, and not ICE cars? EV buyers have been getting subsidies for years to purchase them, they don't pay any VED, they don't get financially penalised for using electric, unless ICE drivers where additional tax is put on fuel (53p + VAT per litre) and now they want to pay less VAT that everyone else. On top of that, come April, ICE drivers are being penalised yet again for the governments decision to subsidise EV drivers, by increasing the VED on ICE vehicles. My VED for last year was £360. Come April, that figure goes up to £395, and that is well above inflation. Meanwhile EV drivers can continue without paying VED until April 2025, after which time they'll be charged a whopping £10!

You want to buy a EV more power to you but the British tax payer should not be burdened with having to support you or an industry that not everyone in the country can afford, why should a person that cannot afford to buy the cheapest of new cars be burdened to pay taxes that end up giving those with excess money savings on their next car or grants for companies to then make billions in profit and pay nothing back as they dodge taxes.

@@Brian-om2hh Well they're being taxed to the hilt for it now, so are we going to be having the same conversation about renewables in 20 years time and that there should be a large windfall tax on renewables? There is currently a 75% corporation tax applied to north sea drilling and even with the massive subsidies of renewables currently they barely make parity. It's all a bubble that's going to burst as the government can't buy peoples electric cars, subsidise renewable electricity, and heating forever.

Intervening in any market or industry is fraught with danger the principle one being you might not end up with the better technology. Some subsidy is necessary for early adoption but the EV current salary sacrifice & BiK subsidy is excessive and only distorts the new car market which generates a lot of sales that when second hand will not be supported by a healthy used demand when these primarily leased vehicles are sold on. Given the pace of change in the technology its easy to be stuck with the wrong EV system and to be fair insurance is becoming problematic and the repair support has a long way to go.

I test rode the Silence version of the Mo at Fully Charged Farnborough in 2021 and was pleasantly surprised. Spotted the massively discounted Mo a few weeks ago and was very interested, that was until I quoted the insurance for it. 66 years old, full motorcycle licence for 46 years, no accidents or convictions, no no-claims bonus discount to claim (it’s being used on another motorcycle I own), fully comprehensive was over £500, third party fire & theft was over £250; my interest waned to zero at that point.

30% more expensive than a Honda PCX125 with half the range and eye watering insurance cost. I'd love a silence SO1 to run around on but until they are closer to parity with ICE vehicles it's sadly not an option.

It appears that all EV powered vehicles are being penalised heavily by the insurance companys. I have just been quoted over £1000 for my 2020 Hyundai Ioniq 38Kwh which makes me consider returning to an ICE car. I realize that insurance on all types of vehicles has gone up but this is getting to the stage where to have an EV is almost impossible.

Maybe worth shopping around , my current policy for a 2022 Kona EV is £350 , I've just rerun the details on Money Supermarket and it's now gone up to £412. That's fully comp with full cover. I think all insurance is going up though....

If you accept that most new EVs sales are company cars/salary sacrifice for tax benefits, these tax benefits have been in place for 4 years, more than the length of the leases. Therefore everyone that 'wants' an EV now has one, hence the flat lining in sales.

Now the clowncils are panicking and charging silly money with silly time limits. 45 minutes on a 50kW with 79p a minute isn't welcoming and almost as silly as the free charging was.

Charge place Scotland manage the chargers for owners, lots of them councils, and you need a RFID card to get round the chargers. 79p is an outlier in CPS charger pricing, but the standard for most chargers round the north of England.​@@grahamleiper1538

It’s textbook stuff. Provide a load of central government funding for installations but leave it down the the individual cash strapped councils to run/maintain it afterwards. Not really surprising it’s turning into the shitshow that it is, but it’s a real shame.

On the drop/stagnation of EV sales I did see a comment on another video that suggested that manufacturers may have tried to delay December sales to roll into the new new so they can start counting the sale to this year to help avoid the fines if they don't hit the 22% EV sales? This is a bit of speculation but does sound plausible. Would need to see this Jan's sales figures to see if there is any truth for this.

It’s sad to see the serious decline in living standards in the U.K. with a worrying increase in reliance on food banks associated with rising levels of poverty. Such self-inflicted harm and fiscal waste for so long that there is no flexibility left to enable a tax reduction for those NOT suffering. The Sunak government can’t even bring itself to commit the net zero timeline…….for domestic short term political reasons, so I can’t see him doing more than ‘setting up’ Starmer with a promise that HE can’t deliver either .

No reduction in vat, no subsidy. If EV vehicles are really great to drive and own then they will sell themselves. If a petrol car is better then the person will buy petrol. My parents have an EV its perfect for them but absolutely not use to me. Stop forcing these things on people who they dont suit. I cant charge at home and I do very long frequent journeys. My wife is getting an EV despite us not being abled to charge at home because she can charge it at work she does about 3000miles per year. I do 35k

You're right - EVs aren't for everybody... yet, at least. At 35,000 miles per year, whilst that would be genuinely achievable in something like a Tesla - owing to being able to access their excellent, wide-coverage Supercharger network - having to cover that amount of mileage using the rest of the public charging network would probably be a challenge. But, for lower mileage, local-driving users - like your parents and your wife - EVs are an excellent way of contributing to an improvement in air quality in our towns & cities. With the significant rise in respiratory diseases - particularly in children - over recent years, Society has to do something and EVs are, at least, part of the answer. No-one wants to be the next Rosamund Kissi-Debrah, burying their child due to air pollution. 😔

If they want to incentivise EV adoption get energy prices down. Bring down electricity costs and EV ownership becomes more compelling. We also need more incentives and requirements for employers, councils and businesses to install AC chargers. How many people with no off-street parking would consider buying an EV if their office or local super market had a bank of cheap-to-use chargers installed?

In early December, deputy Prime Minster Oliver Dowden made a speech urging the public to be more resilient to power outages (torches,candles and battery radios etc). We are seeing energy companies offer incentives to not use electricity at peak times. Loads of valid points in the comments but I think the UK’s ability to generate enough electricity and get it across the grid presents as a huge elephant in the room when considering purchases of either EV’s or Heat Pumps.

Big EV companies will challenge/complain about the ZEV mandate until the figures are considered conservative - at the moment they are quite ambitious. The problem is that the government delay to 2035 sends a message that EVs aren't ready for prime-time, yet the ZEV mandate ignores this. A government message which is positive to EVs and other incentives to update your car would go a long way to improve the chances that the targets can be met.

Government meddling in commercial markets always ends in disaster. There are serious issues with EVs that have not been sorted that will continue to dampen the market and these makers are well aware of this.

Not surprised about Nissan. They might have made the Leaf but they also made the Qashqai. The diesel version of this car allegedly increased emissions by 17x when outside of the MOT test! Far worse than Volkswagen.

According to Honest John, the facelifted and cheaper Tesla Model 3 is open for ordering with prices from £39,990 and deliveries from January 2024. I've read that existing Model 3 sales have stalled until then, which could have affected the overall EV sales statistics for November. Additionally, second-hand EV sales have grown significantly during 2023, helped by Onto flooding the market with nearly-new stock, which will also have displaced new EV sales as buyers seek something cheaper.

The best incentive to encourage ev ownership is to have the price of electricity come down significantly, i have an MG5 and the reason I bought it was the cost of electricity 2yrs ago and zero road tax not any other reason just pure economics

Subsidise the infrastructure, and the VAT on public charging, ahead of individual purchasing. Halving purchase VAT (presumably only on brand new) would collapse (further) the BEV residuals, and play straight into the political pantomime of "hand outs for the rich".

BT have claimed they're going to install charging points in about 6,000 of their green street cabinets apparently. The idea being those are being changed up because of the install of fibre to the home. Presumably they need less space or will install new cabinets that can cope with their fibre network but also car charging. Adding destination to existing street furniture is interesting, especially if it's cost effective. I'll believe it when I see it though.

The problem is many of these cabinets aren't practical for charging in terms of location. Many are set on junction corners or way back from the road.

1:11 All this has happened before and will happen again and again. It happened in the late 90s/early 2000s in California, with the California Air and Resources Board (CARB) being at the heart of the site of lobbying against the EV mandate of the time. It got squashed at the time, purely because the automotive industry didn't want to make a product that people didn't want to buy, even though there were people wanting to buy them.

I'm honestly surprised that Ford was pushing hard for a stricter mandate. Around 1% of their sales in the UK is an EV and as far as I know, they've only got one new model coming in 2024. They don't have an EV platform like VW does with MEB (in fact Ford want to use MEB), so they are finding it hard to electrify their fleet. They really need a common platform so they can bang out EV equivalents of their big sellers like Stelantis and VAG do.

@@ModernHeroes okay fair point. Nevertheless having any decent sized battery in the home makes me intrinsically uncomfortable. Yes, you can argue the myriad phones, headsets and other battery gadgets pose a similar risk, but the order of magnitude if and when anything was to happen.

If EV cars are such a brilliant idea why do consumers have to be forced into buying them. Much like Heat Pumps - if they were that good wouldn't they be flying off the shelf? Maybe, in their lemming like dash to Zero Carbon they are trying to force consumers to jump off that cliff with them.

The problem isn't the EVs, it's the horrendous misinformation around EVs that's the problem. EVs are good. We've got the likes of the Daily Mail blaming car park fires on EVs and highlighting every negative story that appears about them when someone has a nightmare journey in an EV thanks to their own ineptitude. The Sun has got better recently but the Daily Mail and Express are still spouting bollux. We (family of 4) got an EV as our only car a year ago and we've never looked back. It's like a Rolls Royce compared to our old (but lovely) Skoda Yeti. It eats the miles and there's really no range anxiety.

No one force me, who is forcing you? After about 30 ICE cars I'm on my second EV and its better than any previous cars - and I've had some good ones. Fast, super quiet, great tech and relaxing to drive.

@@Brian-om2hh The government is forcing you. Look at the facts. They force the car makers to sell a certain % of EV cars or face steep fines, This % goes up year on year. By 2035 there will be no new ICE vehicles on sale as they will be prohibited. THAT IS FORCE, NOT CHOICE. What else would any reasonable person call it?

Problem is the mandate runs ahead of the technology standing on its own two feet in the market hence no new cheap EV, though Dacia will have the spring soon its a very limited offering s used Zoe is so much better. Car makers concentrate on profit do the £30k plus segment is their target meanwhile the Chinese are coming though i still await the simple cheap granny car which is eadily achievable after all the technology is dimple nesrly maintenance free but will lack profit.

Not that simple. EVs are generally more expensive to buy at the moment a VAT cut would bring purchase price parity and then they would compete on equal terms with Petrol cars.

As we now have the lunacy of Brexit and therefore able to ‘take back control’ why can’t the government simply drop the imposition of EU vehicle construction rules and decide to import Chinese economy cars selling for £10k. If Parliament really wanted to rapidly spread EV adoption, it’s entirely within their remit to do so by making it a compelling case financially for regular folk to own them through simply changing uk regulations and dropping import tariffs. Of course vested interests and the legacy manufacturers would fight tooth and nail to stop this, however if EV adoption is so critical to meet climate targets then why not do it?

This target process to get us into, the gov are doing everything possible to stop us driving around so who will be driving in 2035. Love the video again I do look forward to seeing it each week, good haircut, where’s the cat? I think we are heading more towards the time that your city car will be automated to be used with a Uber type app locally. Bikes are great miss mine, but as Wales has been closed to bikes best to take the Amie route.

A cut in vat would have no impact on fleet and business registrations of EVs , they claim the vat back . Makes no difference whatsoever. It would only be private buyers who would benefit and at the moment they account for less than 25% of new EV buyers

Businesses that buy cars that aren’t 100% for business use can’t reclaim the VAT either - though I’d imagine those are few and far between given they’d tend to lease instead.

EV sales are only down here and in Germany, everwhere else they are up. I think I says more about the woeful state of the UK economy than it does about EVs. Still the Chinese are coming and they can make truly affordable EVs so this is just a blip.

I truly believe if Carlos Ghosn was still in the hot seat at Nissan things would be very different,I’m not taken with Vinfast to be honest but I guess time will tell,Fisker are in serious trouble from what I’m seeing which is sad as I really like the Ocean,looking forward to the Maxus Reviews,cheers fella 👍😉💪

On EV sales figures... It just goes to show that nearly 84% of buyers, don't want an EV. I can't blame them either! Many of the issues and bad news you highlight in this video, clearly shows EV's are not what the majority of people want - and are not as good as people claim - in my opinion of course!!

I just checked around 1.2% of cars on UK roads are electric. That means according to your 84% number there is still another 14.8% that still want to purchase an Electric car. I’m also willing to bet that if I gave a brand new EV to someone that said “I’ll never own an EV” they’d be very happy. 😃

Not sure I agree - uptake would be slower in the company car arena I’m sure but even the previous grant scheme wasn’t a particular driver for others, as I said in this video it was mostly used to increase manufacturer margin.

As an EV owner, I'd very much like to see the oil industry pay back the £billions in taxpayer funded subsidies they've enjoyed over the past few decades. It would mean the cost of petrol increasing by 3 to 4 times though..... There are no subsidies on EV purchase anymore in the UK. They ceased a few years back.

We were told that EV's would reach parity in price to ICE cars. Until this becomes a reality most ordinary people won't be able to make the switch unfortunately.

Some of the current offers reach parity and beyond - £23k for a pre reg ID3, £19k for a new Corsa etc.

The problem with increasing the EV adoption is not the owners who already have one and can charge at home, it’s the millions of people like me who drive a petrol car and cannot charge at home. My petrol car at the moment costs me 14p per mile around town and 12.5 on a longer journey, travelling at 80 mph on a motorway. To use the public chargers in my local town costs a minimum of 69 pence per kWh, and up to 90 pence at the most expensive public charger. That works out to be up to 30 pence per mile on the most expensive charger. Until public charging costs me less per mile than my 2.0 litre petrol estate car I will not even consider an EV.@@ModernHeroes

they are reaching parity by making ICE much more expensive than they were (nothing for less tha £16,000 these days) and removing the cheap to buy and run VW Ups, 108/C1/Aygos, low end Fiestas etc

We in UK desperately need EV cars insensitive similar to USA. How is it that UK GOV can not offer any subsidies for purchases of EV? This is what holding me back to switch. The high cost of a comparable BEV to ICE.

You can currently buy a brand new electric Corsa for the same price as a petrol one, ID.3 for a grand more than a boggo Golf, ID.4 for a grand more than a Tiguan, etc. Not sure we’re far from price parity at all in reality.

The new petrol Corsa starts at £19,275 and the top model starts at £25,335. The electric Corsa starts at £32,445 and rises to £38,25. @@ModernHeroes

I’m really not sure why the whole EV v ICE debate keeps getting regurgitated. It’s very simple, here goes, The EV market is being forced by governments, manufacturers have been bullied into producing them and releasing them to market before they are fully developed, along with tempting businesses by offering tax concessions they can’t ignore. The EV new registrations are not a true reflection of what the motoring public wants. EV’s need to be cheaper than ICE when new for them to ever stand a chance,and that shouldn’t be via tax reductions. The top and bottom of it, is EV’s have a place, but so do mopeds and not everyone wants a moped.

Thanks for talking about the mandate. There will be some great deals on EVs this year, and a lot of dealers refusing to sell ICE cars to meet the targets. Do this next - which manufacturers will be trading credits.

The government could do a whole lot more for those people that can’t charge at home. Think 5% vat on charging plus force local councils to give permission to lamppost chargers. Many councils have been offered free installation by CPOs but they refuse to give permission.

@@ReapermanUK former pulse 50kW units bought by BP have been in use for 10 years will most certainly have made a nice income and will have been written off for tax purposes years ago. So 79p kWh cannot be justified, its price gouging pure and simple. What else can you expect from big oil?

You haven’t done your homework. Questions you need to ask. At what point does an EV become carbon neutral? What proportion of the electricity you use to charge an EV is renewable energy? What is the overall lifecycle of an EV compared to ICE ( this one is an unknown at the moment) If the government reduces vat on new EV’s , what will they increase to make up the short fall?

The figures spouted by our vehemently anti-EV media (no doubt funded by oil companies) only ever quote EVs vs ICE based on tail-pipe emissions - conveniently omitting the CO2 cost of searching for, extracting and refining oil for fuel. Based on a study covering ICE vs EV cars on a Pan-European electricity production by country assessment, EVs demonstrated a Global Warming Potential figure at an average of 45% compared to the 100% 'base-line' figure for the equivalent petrol-engined car over a 15 year, 225,000km lifecycle. What proportion of the electricity you use to charge an EV is renewable energy? About 55% of the UK's electricity production for 2023 was from zero-carbon sources (44% renewables + 13% nuclear) What is the overall lifecycle of an EV compared to ICE ( this one is an unknown at the moment) Most modern EV batteries will outlast the car they're fitted to - with 200,000+ mile in-car capacity. After that, batteries are then re-cycled for use in static battery storage units for homes and businesses.

The cost of this change is completely insanity, the elephant in the room is the massive price of EV's compared with ICE vehicles. People simply cannot afford the cost of an EV. The usual route for change is to make the economic cost of owning an EV so attractive everyone will change to EV's. How about 100% vat on all new ICE vehicles and 2K/year minimum road tax for all non EV's. That would cause a change without Quotas. I do own an EV.

The elephant in the room, is that a lot of EV’s are not fit for purpose because they’ve been forced to market by governments who have no clue about vehicle development . You obviously have zero concept of how business works and the meaning of a democracy, you want a country where the government dictates the public’s decisions, and you’d probably then moan when the government starts dictating when you can charge your car or when you can actually use it or how far you travel.

100% tax is what happens in some countries. Denmark for one, if the car is over a certain threshold, it's a no brainer otherwise that Volvo XC 90 or whatever costs twice as much with tax.
