This is my opinion about whether you should get a 3d mouse. The 3d connexion spacemouse, and spacemouse pro, is an awesome piece of gear in my opinion. I use mine everyday and I've used it for years without any problems. The spacemouse is an amazing concept. It works flawlessly with Fusion 360. I love the ability to use the 3d mouse to push and pull my model away from me. The spacemouse doesn't work with all programs but it does with most.

Excellent video! Your reasoning was concise and easy to follow. I'm an old-school geek (think: built web sites in a text editor on WFW 3.11) and trying to get in to 3D modelling to get better use out of my 3D printer. This has convinced me to go for the spacemouse, but not the pro. I might also play with meshmixer before I try and beat my head against Fusion 360. My old gray matter can only take so much punishment.

Thanks for the review! I'm a maker that's been learning F360 for 3D Printing and woodworking and such for the last 5 years and I've had great success with just a mouse and keyboard combo, but I agree with you that the view manipulation was lacking without a 3D Mouse. I just ordered the Space Mouse Wireless and hope it lives up to its reputation in the industry.

Hardware like this has always made me wish I was into ANYTHING that made sense for using them. I appreciate the hell out of the capability and wish I had the skills and needs to use it, at times I would have even bought it despite zero ability to put it to use. 😂

I recently ordered the 3D Spacemouse Wireless. I'm hoping it will help me navigate around Lightwave 3D, Form Z 9, and maybe work in Silo 3D. I also have a display tablet with another monitor. So I hope there won't be any issues with that setup. Thanks Joe!

if you're buying second-hand you can usually pick these up for a lot less than the compact ones as they are not quite so popular due to people travelling and commuting and so on

Should you? That's a no brainer. Yes. I use one every day. I can't imagine doing my job without it. Creo, Solidworks, NX, Surfcam. BTW 3DX's software will control the 3DX Cad Mouse (R hand) and a Pilot (L hand) simultaneously. 3D Conexion for the win.

Thanks man. I knew it was designed for CAD originally, so I was guessing it was a gimme in the CAD world. Thanks.

I had the small version and just couldn't get on with it. Maybe for sculpting or navigation around architecture but for general 3d work found it too slow and having to keep coming off the keyboard to use it. Think it really depends on your type of work if it's useful to you.

I used to own a gaming Logitech gaming mouse, which came with button mapping and settings software that I really liked. I think this 3D mouse would benefit from something like the Set Point software. The program let you load macros into the memory of the mouse itself, so that when you triggered them with a specific button press, it would send input signals to the computer as if it were a combination mouse and keyboard. Programs could literally not tell these macros apart from manually input key presses and mouse clicks. I think this kind of approach would allow the 3D mouse to work with more programs. I could even take the mouse and plug it into a different computer without the mouse configuration software installed, and the macros would still work. The only downside is that I would still need the software to program the mouse with _new_ macros. I'm pretty sure that Logitech owns the company that makes the 3D mouse reviewed here. So I suspect they could work out a solution to make this happen if they wanted to.

I used one of those mice for that as far back as 2011 or so,I had a profile with all the buttons mapped to CAD commands I was using the most. Worked like a charm.

@Commandodesigns

Yes, it is. Waaaayyyy more. It works great with Blender.
@LightCarver
@LightCarver 2 года назад
Blender works perfectly once you set it up to work with your preferences. You have to be aware that some programs use the raw input of the device and bypass the 3d mouse app settings. Settings like axis inversions etc. are done inside those programs instead.
@akongas
@akongas Год назад
10 months since you posted here, are you still using it? Is it still working with blender properly?
@LightCarver

@@akongas Still working. Have used with up to version 3.2 stable.
@akongas
@akongas Год назад
@@LightCarver is it worth it do you think?
@LightCarver
@LightCarver Год назад
@@akongas If you might use it for anything else, yes for sure. It is a bit of a pain figuring out settings that work in Blender, since Blender has more navigation types/styles than anything else. Some of that is stuff worth learning anyway. With blender I end up using a mix of controls for different things, which makes the few quirks less annoying - although it means learning both types of navigation. I bought a used older model off Ebay for $50 (spacepilot) which required installing an old version of the software, of course Blender bypasses the 3d mouse app and only uses the driver anyway so newer mouse control app features are worthless for Blender. One unexpected thing I found is that it's the most comfortable and controllable way to scroll web and document pages by tilting forward/back - which works in nearly all of those kinds of non-3d apps. Occasionally you will find a 3d app that is not made to work with any 3d mouse at all, in those it will just zoom with tilting forward/back.
@akongas
@akongas Год назад
@@LightCarver Thank you so much for that detailed reply, muchly appreciated. I might take a look at Spacepilot and check them out. Cheers :)

I'm thinking about getting one. Does anyone know how well it works in FreeCAD? I use 99% of the time Fusion, but I'm afraid that they'll drop out the free version in near future and I try to keep basic skills in it too. Also Blender is one of the software I've been trying to get into and that would be nice to hear comments too.

I'm concerned. Does it work flawlessly with any software? I just want to make sure that there's software out there that works flawlessly. If it doesn't work flawlessly, I'm not sure if this is the thing for me. Must be flawless. I wish you mentioned something about it being flawless in this video.

Who noticed the same BUGS when using 3D-Mouse? - very often the center of rotation does not appear on the desired part of the model, or it can be located outside the screen. You can try to change settings - but this happens again and again. Latest drivers installed. How to solve this problem? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1a65q9uVlGw.html

What you did not mention is that the mouse works just fine, till you buy a new computer/system. In all these years that i use these things, every time the mouse work fine, but not on my new machine. And now it just happend for the 3th time. Now i must buy a new one, only what i mentioned above. :-( And yes, its the software

I have a 3d gaming mouse. Microsoft made it and dropped it after 2 years. No updates no anything. It did the all the same that yours could do and had a 12 key and 3 function for the keys had a thumb key that had 3 switches making 108 keys! It was made 1998.

This one? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ooB7K6HThlc.html It's not quite the same thing. It's been awhile since I owned one, but I believe it's only 3 axes (slide U/D, slide L/R, twist L/R). The 3dConnexion 3d mice also tilt all 4 cardinal directions and push/pull the knob up/down. Still was an awesome controller. I eventually gave mine to a buddy who did a lot more PC gaming than me.

Hahahhaha you’re explaining the 6 DOF function of the mouse and saying it works flawlessly!! :))))) That’s its function dude. It works just the same with all softwares, those that are supported within of course. I use it with CATIA, ProE, NX, ANSA, META and it works the same. It does what it’s designed to do and it is awesome. I’m ignoring what you said about “artistic flow” and ... because I’m an engineer. To anyone who’s wondering whether to buy this (or the simple 3D Space navigator)! Buy it. Your life will change after using this.
