Should you Buy a Lexus? Are they just glorified Toyotas?

A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician shares the truth about Lexus. Are they worth their high cost? Are they just glorified Toyota Models? What's good and what's bad about Lexus.
So Should you buy a Lexus? This video happens to be the first of many videos on my channel as a new initiative to be more inclusive to Lexus models on my channel! This comes by request of the Car Care Nut awesome community!
So in the first section of this video, We will take a trip down memory lanes to look at the humble beginnings of Lexus. How they started and what kind of impact they did that believe it or not changed the entire trajectory of the luxury car market.
Then we're going to dive into the first conversation. Are Lexus models basically a Toyota with some fake leather and a higher price? The jury is still out on this one but in this video I give you the truth from experience.
Then we're going to set the record straight for who should and shouldn't buy a Lexus. The worst thing that could ever happen to a car buyer is to pay a small fortune for a car then dislike it after 2 weeks. I hope this video will give you a better insight as to what to expect when you buy a Lexus so you can decide if you Should or Should NOT buy a Lexus.
Folks, No company is perfect. Lexus included! In a later part of the video I will cover somethings that Lexus gets so wrong and this is recent! Then we will cover the "test results" of the Lexus LFA. Many say the Lexus LFA was a muscle flex exercise from Toyota\Lexus to show the world that they can be serious about performance. I have a different opinion about this which you might find interesting I hope!

I was fortunate and was given the opportunity to be the Service and Parts Director for 1 of the first Lexus Dealerships in September 1989 when we started selling cars. Lexus did it right from the start with amazing product but Lexus has its reputation today because of how customers were treated by Dealership associates and that’s what Lexus IS known for. I’m proud that I played a part in building a reputation for a car and company that changed the Automobile business. This September will mark my 33 year anniversary with the same Lexus dealer I began with. Update…this September 1 2024 will mark my 35th anniversary with The Lexus dealer that I began my Lexus journey with!! And 30 days from now will mark my 40 year anniversary with the same dealer!

A huge difference that many folks fail to mention is the paint quality. While the German brands might be known for the best paint, Lexus ranks right up there. Next time you see a 10-year-old Lexus take note of the lack of rock chips or fading, then compare that to a Toyota, Honda, etc. So, if you want a car that drives AND looks great after 10 years, upgrade to the Lexus.
@mathisnotforthefaintofheart
Paint, different sheet metal, different type of leather, different interior materials, different sound deadening materials, differently tuned suspension, different glass, different soundsystems, different wring and rivets, so yes, definitely worth the upgrade!

A friend of mine in Japan is working for Toyota R&D in Aichi. He said all the components for Lexus are produced under much more strict quality control than those for Toyota cars. It is known in Japan that Toyota has the toughest quality control than any other motor companies but Lexus has more than that. Another friend of mine who is working for Bridgestone R&D in Japan told tires refused by Lexus could be sold to other motor companies. This is the level of quality control employed in Lexus.

I agree completely! I was a German car buyer for 20 years. I've owned 6 Porsche 911s from 1986, 1987, 1988, 2001, 2007 & 2011. I also owned a handful of BMWs and Mercedes. I bought a 1995 Land Cruiser and not only made a killing on it, but woke the hell up about quality control, not quality of materials. QUALITY CONTROL! German cars and the two Range Rovers that I owned had quality of materials and ability to perform, but their quality control was terrible. I've never looked back! I now own a Lexus GX460 and I can tell you, it's been heaven! Not only that, the Lexus dealer experience is phenomenal!

My experiences with Porsches were quite rewarding before they were swallowed up by VW Group. They were hand built works of art that outperformed every sportscar of those eras. They were less reliable and more costly to maintain than, say a mid 80s Mercedes, but nonetheless an incredible all around economical sportscar to drive and own. Fast forward to 1996 and beyond, in this time of debt based living, they turned into the ultimate mass consumerist auto maker where growth means everything and quality control and reliability takes a distant third. VW cranked up production numbers to meet the newly opened eastern euro and Chinese markets and Porsche ceased to be what made them great. The new ones are a bore to drive with all of their weight and nanny controls and their quality measures are exactly that of an Audi…TERRIBLE. I have wonderful memories with my past Porsche experiences, especially with the earlier examples. Cheers!

This guy is absolutely the bomb as a reviewer. He is insightful and knowledgeable due to his background as a master Toyota mechanic. He breaks it down so even the average buyer can understand these cars, deftly explaining the differences between Lexus, its original parent company-Toyota- and the European brands. After multiple car reviews seen here on RU-vid, I bought a Lexus RX350-h. Car is getting 40 miles to a gallon so far and that helps in this economic nightmare we are all living through even if you are solid financially. I anticipate a good maintenance history for this vehicle and a good resale return when the time comes as he suggests. Thanks for the awesome post.

One big selling point for me the Lexus IS has over the BMW 3-series that nobody ever talks about, is double wishbone front suspension - in a compact sedan. This makes the car way more planted in the corners and more nimble, but car reviewers will often mistake this as "boring driving dynamics" because it's less unruly with less body roll....it's actually superior. BMW tunes out some of the problems with Macphersons and make them work, but will never be better than tried and true double wishbone. The reality is that most car reviewers don't actually want a better car. They just want a more fun car - and that is often very subjective.

100%. I completely represent the Toyota/Lexus buyer that he describes. Daily drove an Audi A7 for 5 years, my other choices before I bought that were Porsche and BMW, and I chose what I thought to be the most reliable between those and by all accounts I did make the correct choice. BUT, the A7 has averaged about $2,000 a year in repairs and maintenance so far. I could afford it, but that doesn't mean I wanted to. My wife's Lexus NX200T (was an F Sport, I thought it was cool, even if AMD doesn't think so) cost nothing more than the routine maintenance. I didn't love driving that NX, but I respected how affordable it was to keep around. If I'm honest though, it handled better than the Audi in a hard downpour rain, but that was the only situation. I don't drive the Audi anymore, daily a 2022 Sienna platinum now. It's as Lexus as I could get with automatic sliding doors for the kids. Will continue to daily Toyota/Lexus in the future. I hate sounding like Scotty Kilmer, but Toyota/Lexus are reliable. I've witnessed it with my own wallet.

I bought a used, one owner, 2006 Lexus GS300 in 2013. It had 50,000 miles and was in wonderful condition. ($18,000) About two months later the check engine light came on. I took it to Lexus and they said there was a problem with the engine and that it would need to be rebuilt. They then told me that Lexus was willing to rebuild the engine with factory new replacement parts. Basically a new short block. I was given a brand new Lexus loaner car which I drove for about 1 1/2 months. When my '06 Lexus was returned it ran perfectly. The cost? ZERO DOLLARS! The car now has 120,000 miles on it and runs like a brand new one. I have had no other serious issues with this car. Just took it on a 2000 mile road trip.... gorgeous. The Lexus is an incredible vehicle. Even if we get a Lexus with well over 100K on the odometer as trade in, they are still solid, quiet, ride and drive better than some new cars that just rolled off the assembly line. It's evident that a lot of effort went into the Lexus nameplate. The only thing I don't care for about Lexus of today is the front grille. Although unique, it's just too bizarre for my taste. Lexus ( and every other manufacture) needs to stop listening to automotive journalists and listen to what really matters which is the people who own these fine vehicles and what's important to them.

We have a 2016 NX 200t F sport. The only nit pick we have with it, is that it's very noisy inside. I have to agree with the f sport argument. If the basic model had the styling of the f sport, would buy in a heart beat!

I have owned one Lincoln Town car, three Cadillac's. Then in 2013 I purchased a Lexus RX 350. We love it. I would not trade the Lexus for all 4 of the American luxury cars put together.

I had a 2010 RX450, should have kept it. Now have a 2016 RX450 (NOT Fjunk) and the seats are NOT comfortable. Think it was around 2014 or 15 they changed the design of the seat. They need to bring back those seats even if it is an option.

The Lincoln Town Car is the only one of the 4 that can hold a candle to Japanese reliability, and that's because a Town Car is a glorified Crown Vic/Grand Marquise. Cadillac is junk.

My biggest issue with Lexus, and for that matter Toyota is with the styling. They took what was a great reliable car with conservative but stately design, and put on that grill that looks like a widemouth bass fish, and a tail end that seems like they forgot to finish the car when they got to the back! Don’t mimic what the other guys are doing! Build a comfortable, reliable, handsome car with classic lines that won’t look dated long before its worn out.

Great choice Marco. I have a 2012 CT200h F-Sport from new. Love the options that came with the F-Sport but have never loved the crashy ride on rougher roads. That said, it corners great and is a superb highway cruiser. Super comfortable on 2000 mile snowbird road trips. One thing to advise you though. Change your CVT and brake fluids asap and also your inverter coolant and engine coolant. Those are not expensive items, need to be done and will double your car's lifespan. You are also due for spark plug replacement - OEM NGKs are $60 and totally DIY. Happy motoring.

Thank you for your honesty. My biggest gripe with the new Lexus alongside many other car manufacturers are the use of big wheels and low profile tires. Give me the old 70 or 65 series tires any day. I put wheels/tires from a '98 Camry on my '04 Avalon and enjoyed driving that thing so much better (still have it on till this day). Luckily the height of the tires matched perfectly. My '02 RX300 was also a better riding vehicle than my '13 RX450h. The new Lexus has got a whole lot better powertrain, safety features and design than prior generations which helps make the harsher ride more bearable. Maybe I'll keep my '98 Camry rims for future use...j/k 😂

We had 04 Avalon xls fully loaded it had 16 65s. Yes, every model and make when they changed around 2006+/- few years per model, the seats all got harder and less ergonomic in shape. That's afar ruined them for me. Restoring an older one after buying then selling models between 2012-2018, I did find the new Camry fairly comfy, though i want something more refined.

Could not agree more.... My 2003 Highlander had 16" rims, with 225/75/16 tires and ran smoother than our 2007 Lexus Rx350 with its 18" rims with low profile tires, and far smoother than our 2013 Venza with its ridiculously harsh riding 20" rims.

So true!!! I am still driving my '99 Camry 335k miles on it, super quiet and comfortable ride. I recently drove a LS430 for about a week. Faster, bigger and all, but not that much quieter and smoother on the road then my old Camry, only a little bit... Then I was in the back seat of my friends newer Camry (about a 2020 car, top sport package I think). The 2.5 hour hwy drive was not pleasant! So much road noise in the car I couldn't believe it. Had trouble hearing my friends conversation in the front seat. Hard ride, seats felt hard leather too (my old Camry is cloth seats and comfortable). Granted the cars grip the road better and handle better at high speeds. But wow did we lose quiet and comfortable! My car with 335k miles is at least 5x quieter then his new one... I am repainting mine and keeping it!

I will agree on the quality of Lexus cars when properly maintained which I did. I still owned my 2004 Lexus RX330 in 2004. The car was immaculate and it was displayed on their showroom here in Los Angeles. They drove the car out of the showroom. Fast forward I still own the car and now has 347,000 miles. Engine is still original and still strong.This car never gave me problems. The check engine light only appeared TWO times and I needed only to replace my catalytic converter and O2 sensor on different times in 19 years of ownership. It still drives smooth. It’s a living testament to the craftsmanship of Lexus. And it still looks nice at her age!

Love all your videos. Now to the F sport. I am otherwise rather immune to marketing gimmicks. I used to own ES'20 luxury. Replaced it with RX f sport (3 months back). My wife has the regular Luxury RX 450h '21. I find RX 450 fsport much nicer to drive than the same car with the luxury trim. Both are great. I had a chance to reserve the '23 model but opted for the outgoing model for the v6. The recent model I don't like that much.

I inherited my grandmas 2003 4Runner with the 2UZ V8 after she bought a 2018 GX460 right off the lot and really, aside from much nicer materials and fancier technology in it, I honestly feel like they drive and sound the same (In a way, I know they are), which is absolutely not a bad thing at all ❤️ After 4 years of trouble-free ownership and 70k on the clock now, she says that her Lexus is the last vehicle she’ll happily ever own. As for the 4Runner, even with it pushing 289k, I will continue driving it until the wheels fall off of it and even then, I’ll never own anything else but Toyota. Truly believe there is no other vehicle on the road that comes close to their reliability, fit n’ finish and all around dedication to quality!

I agree totally. I said in one of the Lexus owner group on FB that some of the heads at the top of the Lexus executives should be rolling because of the intro of LS500 discontinuing tbe V8 by introducing a TT-V6. That's a huge deportation of Lexus from it's original ideology of a luxury, prestine and tranquil sedan. Well, the drop in sales of the LS is a solid testimony.

I've owned a couple of Toyota's, first a 2006 Corolla S, then a 2015 Camry XSE V6 (My brother owns the car now) both great cars with no problems, but wanted to step up to a Lexus for a long time. I eventually bought a used 2017 IS200t F-Sport three years ago & replaced it with a 2016 GS350 F-Sport that I bought last year, both have been problem free so far as expected. My grandma drove a 1992 SC300 for twenty years with no problems & replaced it back in 2012 with a new 2012 ES350 that she's still driving today with no problems so far.

A few years ago I owned a 2008 IS 250 AWD. I went to car max and had a Acura TL which was nice, I drove both back to back. Night and day difference with build quality and quietness. Hands down Lexus so much nicer and I ended up getting the IS 250.
@ShinobiXRevived
@ShinobiXRevived 2 года назад
And that IS250 is considered a low tier Lexus. They don't hold their value that well, and their long term reliability is slightly questionable compared to other Lexuses, due to their drive train that isn't used on other platforms, and the AWD system. Still a great car! To me, it just emphasizes the point.
