There are two challenges with using a projector and a painted wall as I made mine back in 2002: 1.) The paint you use can either be eggshell white or you can try using, what someone below mentioned, and that’s a medium gray. The gray is going to deepen the darks in the show/movie, but you must have a brighter (lumens) projector to pull that off. Note: I stuck with the eggshell and have not changed it since. 2.) You will have to resist the temptation to just go big with screen size. First make sure you do not make too big by putting your projector on a ladder (with someone to assist, of course) and taking the time to adjust what will be your final size. You do not want a screen so big you feel overwhelmed and get that front-row cinema experience you get when you’re one of the last people to enter the movie. The extra time to put into this will save you the frustration of redoing the screen later. God bless!
I have a 120" screen with an LG pf1500 led projector I use every night of the week and it has a bulb life of 30,000 hours, there is no motion blur no downsides whatsoever, you cannot hear the fan, it's simply fantastic, thanks for a great presentation.
Your videos are very good man. It's hard to find someone who really understand projectors technology, and you are one of the best I have watched on RU-vid. I bought a BenQ W1070 three years ago and since then I never came back to TVs again. Projectors are awesome. Now I'm just on the waiting for the 4k projectors to go down in price so I can upgrade. Optoma made a great move with the UHD60, now let's see how BenQ will respond to that.
José Pedro Bonadio I bought Benq W1070 few yrs ago as well,I should've returned it because its has Rainbow Effect and I guess I'm one of the People who can see it
Ardon Platt Because black people are afraid of being called Oreos or acting white And that’s ridiculous everyone to talk clearly and with proper grammar
He said why doesn't everyone speak like this. Not, why doesn't every black person speak like this. Interesting that you made it racial, and are incorrect..... He said that it was "So balanced". Meaning that he was balanced in his approach and logic as to whether to get a TV or a projector. It had nothing to do with "how" clearly he spoke, or even whether he used proper grammar. It was all about the balance that he delivered both sides of the projector/tv situation. Again, quite interesting that you went racial.
A year ago my brother started me in the project of building my own home theatre. I never thought I'd be able to afford it or pull it off, but now I'm just one month away from completion. This video helped settle any doubts.
What another great video, man. All your points, after living with a projector for 10 years, are spot on! Also, gaming on 100" plus is nothing short of AWESOME! One more thing you can do to 'combat' light in the room is use a screen distance/size calculator to figure out the shortest throw to the screen within about 0.5-1" worth of zoom and focus. This will let you 'tune' the projector to project the brightest, 'smallest', image tailored for your screen size. This combats ambient light some by just having a (much) brighter image than putting the projector in a neutral location and having several-tens of inches or feet worth of zoom/focus to use.
Very informative video My 73" tv just went out and I was having a hard time deciding between buying a tv or switching to a projector Definitely going to a projector
Completely agree. I have 2 Epson projectors at home. Including a shift 4K one in my living room, on a 100” screen, which replaced a 60” TV. Dark curtains did the trick for lighting, when there’s too much light coming in at certain times of the day. I always tell my friends, “once you go projector, you never go back”, and converted more than a handful of them. I only wish I had a bigger wall...
Thanks for the info! You give us the facts and nothing but the facts! I appreciate that you don't talk down to us! Very refreshing to know that there are still adults in the room!
Great video! we just finished our house and do not visible TV in our living room - in fact, we only watch movies. This is when a projector comes into picture. Lots of useful info in this video. Thank you.
I started with some cheapo 5.0 (yes a .0 meaning no sub) speaker set up 10 years ago. Just last Christmas I pulled the trigger on getting a projector with a 135 " screen along with a 7.2.4 klipsch speakers......now I'm a basement dweller that never sees the light of day.
Mine is BenQ MH530 1080P Home Theater Projector, $499 from newegg, and 100" automatic screen with remote for $65. Shocked how good it is, never going back. Now to upgrade that sound bar. Not even sure what to do with the 65" 4k tv the screen drops in front of.
G'day, in the very late 80s, 88-90 I worked for a company in Perth Western Australia. The company had a few departments. Firstly it made commercials for television, secondly, it serviced Sony Audio Visual Equipment (Trinatrons, Monitors, VCRs, and Projectors), and thirdly I worked in the Hire Department, where we set up Sony Monitors, Video Projectors, PA systems, for commercial events. We set up massive screens in Pavilions, and multiple monitors for events like the Melbourne Cup, satellite feeds like the opening of the North West Shelf. We even hired a company, who brought the very first single bulb projector I had ever seen, to set up a massive 50 ft screen at Burswood Casino. You talked about cost, well that very first of its kind single bulb Projector I was told was worth $250,000 USD. Not sure what we hired the guy and it for, but it was beautiful. So were the typical sony RGB projectors, which I took home quite often to watch movies as they came out on Video. The world has changed. What was worth thousands, we now can have for 1/10th of the price, and it does a better job. Id still like to find one of those old Sonys. The Techs in our service department, were very elitist, they would not touch anything unless it was Sony. O wonder how they feel about the invasion of tech over the last 30 years. As a Military Comms Tech, I waked up daily to the world of Wild Palms(Great Movie) I envisaged when that movie first came out. VR and Holograms, lets hope we get to see them in the not so far future. You have a great channel and a new subscriber, I wish you well mate.
Great video-really covered all the bases and did it in an interesting way. The effect of him talking in the movie theater and comparing resolutions really drove some of the points home.
No one below seems to get what he means. Run a game in 4k or UHD blurayy in 4k run it into a hdcp 2.2 to hdcp 1.4 video wall converter. Most video wall converters have sofyware that matches the color and brighrness and overlap of multiple monitors or projectors. Then you would have a Native 4 k projector setup capable of 10 000lumens gor about 1000$ less than any sony 4k projector that only has 2400lumens
It's no impossible. A guy done a similar thing but with a singular image. X2 5k lumens. Merged them on top of one another. =10k lumens screen. The only issue if any is the surface. It would need to be solid! Vibration and bump free. X4 graphics or a x4 Izmir splitter splitter. But yes, the level of awesomeness would be ...well ....awesomely! :)
A 4K projector should be coming out this week. It's the Optoma UHD60. It's $2,000 and pretty loaded with features, so they're definitely coming down in price. I'm thinking it's going to shake things up a little bit. Nice video! :)
You can’t go wrong with a projector there is nothing wrong with them. I have both Samsung tv & BenQ projector & hook my ML sound system up to both of them. I basically use the projector for games & movies, the tv I use for shows as it helps saving me from buying a new bulb for the projector. Other than that there is nothing more satisfying then blowing someone up in a video game only to have them fly across a wall, it truly is a unique experience. O & then there’s porn lol
@@jeffrey_george I use to game around 6 hours a day with GTA5 but have slowed down a bit. Movies tend to be around 3 a week maybe, i just got done watching all 3 seasons of Stranger Things & first two seasons of Tales from the Crypt. I have used the projector quite a bit & it's still as good as new, BenQ makes pretty good quality projectors. Projectors are a lot of fun i highly recommend them
I discovered your channel a little while ago and man I must say your production has improved exponentially! Your content is always A+, keep it up and thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge!
Hey majestechs I have a 36k home theatre (original MSRP) 5.2 setup with mains bi-amped...im telling you, you should sacrifice two of the rear surrounds to bi-amp those Polk audio towers...the boost In sound quality will amaze you and make much better use of those channels that hardly play any material anyways as most content is 5.1...check out your receivers manual to see if it has bi-amping capability...the tweeters and woofers in your mains will now have their own current resulting it much more dynamic range and overall depth...try it!
did you seriously recommend someone remove their rear surrounds to bi amp front speakers on the same damn amp? there will be no difference in sound whatsover and theres always upmixing in receivers that will make use of your rear surrounds even while watching stereo content.
Great video. Another pro for a projector is that if you have a small house like me, a TV takes up alot of useful space. My 70 inch screen comes down Infront of a bunch of photos on the wall. When rolled up, you have access to the shelving and picture behind the screen.
Great and really informative video! Though I got the optoma uhd550x for 2k€ and with fixed gray 133" screen the 4k content looks just amazing ;) I was surprised that the thing gets pretty close to tv quality in my opinion (in dark room of course). Also the ultradetail option can upscale fullhd content to near 4k in certain situations.
Really excellent video...I've watched tons of videos about projectors and this is the best to give a good overall assessment of them versus Tv's. Thank you sir, from Dublin, Ireland! Great work!
Before watching your video, I have to say, the answer is YES! lol. My husband and I have run a projector as our primary (only) livingroom display/TV for the past 10 years. 100" plus or go home! :D Started with a 1024x768 Viewsonic meeting room projector and a stereo amp, then upgraded to a 1080p Vivitech home theater/meeting room light canon of a projector and a basic 5.1 receiver, and as of a couple of years ago we're up to a dedicated home theater projector with the BenQ HT2050 and shopping for a new receiver (think we've settled on the RX-V483). We've long gotten over the minor downsides, just like people of yore who enjoyed giant rear-projection TVs. Our first screens were using special paint blends we found on home theater forums (AVS forum I think) and worked GREAT. Then got a 100" motorized theater screen later on for a steal... free shipping on a 6x6" x 110" long box? Someone took it in the shorts!
Hey Chris, How are you doing bud? I'm watching your channel for a while and decided to buy the best laser projector. I have a suggestion for your next video. I'm looking to buy a laser projector. I have several choices: 120" Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS500 vs Optoma CinemaX P2 and FullHD Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS300. I couldn't find anything about these the Best laser projectors comparing. Epson LS500 comes with a screen, can provide some choices for the screen as well for 120"? Thank you!
Response time differs on all projectors and even brands, but some of the low lag ones are Optoma hd25 lv-20, Benq 1070 and Epson HC 1440 and HC 2040. Read Projectorcentral.com for reviews and input lags.
oh man this question was bothering me when I wanted to buy projector! because I had TV where input lag was very high and when you play FPS it's like you are being in the butter or something like that! but I didn't know which parametr is responsible for this and I didn't know what I should look at when I compare different models. in case of monitor/display it calls "response time" and I thought that's what I should looking for but it wasn't right because these are different numbers. pc's displays might have 1-10 ms when procetor migth have 15-30 ms and it calls "input lag" so I bought one of the best gaming projectors (if you can believe in articles in internet) - optoma gt1080 (gt1080e) - input lag is about 16 ms. and I was shocked how quick it is! it feels like display! I was testing many shooters with mouse and keyboard there are no delays at all!!!
Bloods Learn about Contrast. Don't compare Dynamic Contrast with real Contrast. In your case, it just says the brightest is 10000 times brighter than your darkest black. And without dynamic Contrast, the Image quality is much more natural. I prefer my Viewsonic pjd7720 over my 60" TV by far! Never again a big TV.
Excellent Review. I'm buying a Sony 4k projector In January. I'm wayyyyyy too excited. Hopefully I can have everything set up the way I want by the summer
I wish I lived in a world where $900 wasn't expensive. Hey do yourself a favor and buy a single piece of dark grey construction paper tape it to your screen, I promise you'll see why. I was at someone's house who had a projector with a dark gray screen and he said he had a white one originally. He held up a white prefer of paper and you could see the difference immediately on the paper.
Very well done and informative. I've been eyeing some projectors online and watching DIY home theater videos. Hoping to pull the trigger soon. This video helped. Thanks!!!
Great video. The other major benefit of projection is being able to put your front speakers behind the screen, which lets you use three matching speakers up front (center channel can be exactly the same as left and right instead of having horizontally oriented drivers, making their dispersion patterns identical) which makes panning effects perfect and locks sound to the picture better.
crazy how fast things change, you said if you're looking for a projector that has 4k HDR you'd have to pay a lot of money but now there's projectors like the BenQ ht3550 that's around $1500
Hey, very insightful. You brought up a lot of things I wasn't considering, specially about the size of my room and the screen size I want in the end. Thanks man
Ok, I don't think none of this is for me for what I wanna exactly do...💁♂️ So my question is, what kinda projector do I need to have for using my phone with it...❓❓❓ Like, what I wanna do is be able to lay in my bed and project RU-vid videos from a projector onto my ceiling while I lay comfortably in bed on my back and watch the video being projected on the ceiling...💯✔ So what do I need to be able to do that...❓❓❓
What kind of phone do you have? If its a newer samsung (S8 to S10 or note 10), you can get a Samsung dex hub or USB-C to HDMI adapter, a keyboard and a mouse and use any kind of projector with an HDMI port.
Wow. In November 2018, I can see 4k HDR projectors on Amazon for around $1200. You were definitely giving good advice about not getting one back then. It didn't take very long for their prices to plummet.
Thanks for the comparison! I really like Ultra Short Throw Projector as they do 't require you to have the projector mounted on the ceiling or sitting in the middle of your dining table. Another big reason to go for a projector instead of a TV is that you won't have this huge bulky black slate of plastic hanging on the wall when it is off. Especially if you live in a smaller space you don't want to feel the presence of a TV when it's not in use! Thanks for the great videos by he way!
I want a projector. I’d rather one at least. But the setup is what is holding me back. To mount the projector. Make/buy a screen. Surround sound. Seems like a lot. Good video!
before you get the projector , mentally test a layout , pace some stuff out . 13 feet Throw Distance to hit 120 inch diagonal . get the projector you want . then start shooting onto a wall to get a idea of layout , and to test the projector . from there decide how you might mount it . Table top , Ceiling upside down . then finally find the screen you want . screen right now , looking at Elite Screens SF120 Star Frame 120 inch . it's about 200 not too serious a price . Fixed Frame .
Projector are nice but one big problem... FAN NOISES.. it is insanely loud... I am looking to getting a TV. Just 24 inch for my room, now researching the 32 inch tv stands distance to see if it can fit my table desk
Nice explanation and comparison. My house is being built right now and I have a few months to put my theatre together. I'm having it wired for 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos and haven't quite decided on tv or projector. I think I'm leaning towards a 120" projector after this
I plan on getting a 4k projector soon I bought a $200 one at my job awhile back 3000 lumens the excitement of see 100 inches of gears of war was beautiful.
I agree. Projectors are awesome! I purchased my first projector when I was 14, this was a Samsung Pico (pocket sized) projector and ever since that moment I have been hooked on them. Many years has passed since then and I now have a 1080p DLP RGBRGB Optoma projector and the movie experience is just breathtaking. I sit roughly 10-12ft away from the screen with the projector directly above me and have my screen at 84" diagonal (may not sound big, but for a bedroom cum mancave it's as big as I can make it and still feels like being at the movies). :-) And btw, great video! You have just gained yourself a subscriber! xD
NICE! you should have more subscribers, I got everything I needed without repeating. Much respect on the time, effort and clarity you put in your videos.
If I had a basement I would be so down with getting a projector. Ideal lighting and very large space. Plus if you are renting a place or leasing and are unsure when you'll move, you can very easily take with you a projector. TV will be very difficult and potentially too costly to take with you
Great vids by the way !!! I have a questions about sports specifically - what would you recommend? I watch football and hockey (when they actually play), so a lot on one color on the screen at a time. Thanks!!
EXCELLENT video! Love the clear and consise way that you've articulated the broad spectrum of important information one should have knowledge of when considering becoming a projector owner. I will be looking at your other videos for sure! Thank you.
Great Video!! I am in the process of finishing my basement and got a 125" screen that I will be using and still looking into the projector. Thanks again!!
see, I usually don't write comments, but I got to tell you, I love your channel, excellent job on every video, adn I agree you deserve more subscribers.
Great video. My basement is all finished and I don't like wires. Is there a wireless 4k hdmi projector? If not I'm ok with wires. Can you suggest a budget 4k projector? What do you think of this it's around 2600 in Canada Optoma UHD60 4K UHD DLP Home Theatre Projector. Thank you
Sony projector & replacement bulb(s)? would be great to hear your thoughts on OEM vs Econ options? what are your rules does it make $$s and cents to go w/ more hours for in cases 2x in cost or go w/ the cheaper option as the limited 30-60 warranty usually is worthless as the bulb with outlast this period w/ 2000 hrs rating? thanks for the help
I have a projector system at a distance of 15 feet. It gets 1080 P quality. It’s an Epson ends about two years old. The problem I have with it is that it requires the use of active glasses which sell for 100 and $100 apiece. Where can I get a projector with 4K capability and have it operateWith passing classes. That would make it much more accessible to a number of people at a much more minimal expense. Hal Bendelstein MD
Me and my dad bought old 7.2 AV receiver and DIY build big wooden speakers which actually shake everything in the apartment and we found out our 40 inch 1080p screen is to small for that audio, so we went out and bough 55 inch 4K LG Smart TV, i opted for 65 inch china TV but my dad wanted solid brand, good features and and amazing quality, now the home theater experience is at next level
Awesome video. One comment my HDR projector with 4k eshift was $4,000 with mount. I got the JVC RS400. I could not be happier. I am projecting on a 135" silver ticket 16:9. sound is definitely the law of diminishing returns. No need to spend big money.
