Hard to say when you see it standing alone it does look like a smaller car. When I see it next to the Mach e in next to the Tesla model three I’m surprised again at how large the ionic five is. "similar" costs seems a little wrong (MSRP): Ioniq 5 middle trim SEL RWD @ 300 miles is $45K... Mach-e Middle Trim Premium RWD @ 300 miles is $55K.... OR the CA Route1 RWD one at $53K... They really aren't in the same range for most.. $8-10K difference.

We've had the IONIQ 5 here in New Zealand for about 4 months and have driven about 7,000 km. I still love it; the software can do odd things occassionally, but the updates have fixed most problems. Some things not mentioned: Ford navigation helps route you to chargers. Ford has wireless CarPlay/AndroidAuto which is awesome once you have it. Ford has a rear wiper. Ford has charging in front which is subjective as to personal preference. I feel it’s more natural to pull in to charge as opposed to backing in. Ford has the digital keypad which is another great feature if using phone as a key because you could still get in the vehicle and drive if you don’t or can’t use your phone. You also can valet park with the Ford without carrying the key. Hyundai has a more polished experience in some ways as I’ve owned ICE and hybrid Hyundais as well as a Ford Fusion Plug-in and a Chevy Volt. I wish the Ford had ventilated seats and a thigh extender so it may come down to seat comfort for me but I really want the Mach E because it just feels/looks more substantial.

My local dealer called me to say that they had a Ionic 5 in and I came and looked at it and it was the lowest trim level. I was tempted to buy it but then they said it was going to cost me an extra $5,000 dealer profit. So they wanted to give me to pay an extra $5,000 for the lowest model instead of waiting to get a better car with that $5,000 and when that higher trim model came in they would still charge me an extra $5,000! So I literally went across the street to the Ford dealer and put in my order for a Ford Mach E which I think is going to be a much better looking car and actually a better car! For Toyota's hybrids many dealers will charge an extra two to $5,000 for what they call an appearance package that amounts to a wax job!

The Mach-E is not an option if you need a roof rack. In Norway, all Mach-E's are actually retrofitted with a load thru system from the importer. Unfortunately, that doesn't help much for a family of four that want to bring skis, snowboards etc.

I would rather have more cabin space than a bigger frunk. The front Mach-E is much longer than the Ioniq 5, so the ioniq could have a bigger frunk, but instead they taken all they have shrunk the front engine cavity space. I’m late to the party here, but I find the Mach-E to be a superior vehicle. I thought the ride quality is better, it’s more spacious, 2 car seats fit in the back and a 3rd adult fits comfortably, the Ioniq 5 doesn’t accomplish that. The Mach-E also gets above EPA at around 328 miles per charge. I find the Mach-E to be the better Road Trip car as it offers way more storage and space, which are both more important in my humble opinion then the 30 min EA charging session, also I don’t think EA has 350Kwh stations everywhere, I know they are installing them, but are they everywhere yet? Because if they are still the old 150kwh stations like EVgo and ChargePoint then the faster charging of the Ioniq 5 is not utilized rendering it useless. To each their own, I honestly prefer the Mach-E because Interior space (width) was the most important to fit the 2 car seats and an adult comfortable, storage space was second, range 3rd, and looks 4th, which I think Mach-E bests the Ioniq in.

I think all of those SUV‘s out there in the $50k to $60k range are great cars. However there is no clear winner since it really depends on driving habits and taste. I drove 10k miles in my XC40 including some road trips and really like it. The performance is amazing. However the range sucks but I like hanging out at EA charging stations. I think until an EV can charge 10 to 80 in 15 minutes, drive 300 miles even in winter and we have at least twice as many >150kWh chargers, EV‘s are only for geeks.

Going to a dealership most of the time becomes an all day event. Two people can literally sleep in the Tesla comfortably with the climate control running only losing minimal power overnight. It’s tempting. So it’s more expensive (about $15-25k here too) but it also seems like a way bigger car with a better charging infrastructure). Going from Washington to Colorado with a Tesla, no problem. Same trip no Tesla… looks challenging or slow at best right now. The ionic’s 2 years of free charging is tempting though. There are literally great points to both.

@@midnight121190 I am not an outdoor person however, I recently took a 6 hours road trip with my buddy who has an Audi E-Tron SUV 2021 and I can tell you with confidence that in 6 hours I hardly noticed if I am tried or not. The drive was smooth and the seats are great. Storage is the same inside I think however, Tesla has more storage in the Frunk. Electrify America is everywhere nowadays and the charging was very convenient. During my trip, my buddy had to charge twice for our 500KM trip while I only charged for 8 minutes once. I agree Tesla has a great charging network however, there are a lot of charging stations for none Tesla cars, especially in the USA. By the way, IONIQ 5 is one of the rare cars that has an adapter that can power your camping gears and even power your house for a few days. At the end of the day, it is a personal choice and how much you are willing to spend. I am happy with what I got and I highly recommend this to all my friends. It is a car that whenever I park people always come to me and check it out because of its special design and look ;) Best of luck!

Considering most people finance on 5-6-7 years, and you can remove the oil expense from their weekly budget, it makes tons of sense. I can afford a lot more car I'd I'm not spending on oil/oil changes (especially that here in Quebec where I live electricity is both very green and very cheap). My car is paid off. Just with the payment on my wife's car and the money we spend on oil weekly, we can more than afford the payments on 2 new ioniq 5s! That's not counting on the big back amounts from our current cars

I don't think I'd be able to set foot in a car that has the pony on it. I get that it's really not a mustang in any sense of the word, but I've never been a mustang guy, and the idea of driving a knockoff electric mustang crossover is even weirder to me. Thinking about Ford's rationality in calling it a "mustang" makes my head spin. On the other hand, the Ioniq 5 is a very original and incredibly stylish product, and it is also one of the most advanced EVs on the road today. To me it seems like a clear choice just on that stuff alone.

I TOTALLY agree with your comment on the Mach e one pedal driving experience as it approaches zero mph. I can’t stand the way it does that little weird thing with the brakes at the end, after you lift your foot off the accelerator. I drive a Chevy bolt, and it is such a smooth one pedal driving experience, that I would be enough to make me NOT BUY a Mach E, just because of its one pedal driving experience is so poor at the very end.

I own a Chevy Bolt and Mustang Mach-E First Edition. The one pedal driving is slightly different but it does change depending on the driving mode you choose on the Mach-E. the Bolt can be stopped faster with 1 PD when using the steering wheel mounted Regen brake. I am so used to both cars 1 PD. It really is a non issue as they both are great. anyone complaining is overly nitpicking in my opinion. No regrets in owning our Mach-E. we have had several OTA updates that have improved the car in many areas, including charging curve, brake feel, Sync 4 features and getting rid of minor bugs. I still get people going wow what a great looking car. Can’t say the Ionic 5 has a any wow factor but certainly is another great EV!

Here in canada the ioniq5 is a way cheaper then the mustang due to how the MSP and the rebate works. A fully loader ioniq5 wich has more stuff then a mach-e will cost you 258/week over 5years loan while the mach-e will be 295/week over 6 years. So the ford one is much more per week and still require 1 more year to get paid. Insaly overpriced for us.

I have been driving a Mazda CX-5 and I had a Chevrolet Bolt EV. I just test drove the Ioniq 5. I test drove the mach-e and the model y. The Ioniq 5 felt way more premium inside than both model y and mach-e the suspension was so nice. Very comfortable. Like i said ive been driving a mazda cx-5 which doesnt ride up very high but the ioniq 5 felt even lower to the ground. I wasnt feeling that. The model Y felt more like an suv in terms of how high you sit when in it. Im not sure now about the ioniq 5. I was hoping it would be a little higher. It feels like i said a big ass hatchback. I went though this process but based on price and driving experience of both I chose the Ioniq 5 RWD LR for the faster charge speed and also the looks. The Mach E here in Canada for RWD was more costly and only qualified for a $3 K Provincial rebate vs $8K in total w Fed & Prov for the Ioniq 5 in BC Canada. The Ioniq 5 is just definitely cooler and more futuristic looking and when I saw it the first time I said to myself, I want that. The Mach E did not do that for me. I expect they will be very close in range in same trim but the Mach E should go a tad further because it has a larger battery pack w more useable. Liked the layout in Ioniq 5 better. Our Bluelink app in Canada is not near as good as US/UK or Europe
