Should You FIGHT Your ANXIETY?

There's a lot of information out there on how to best address your anxiety. However, sometimes these solutions may conflict with one another. Sometimes we're told that we should FIGHT our anxiety by putting ourselves in anxious situations in order to grow more accustomed and braver. Other times we're told to ADHERE to our anxiety where we make lifestyle changes that try to avoid that uncomfortable feeling. Obviously the fight/adherence philosophies aren't completely at odds all the time, but it seems that confusion may arise when trying to find out how best to address this problem. #anxiety #mentalhealth #psychology

For people with general anxiety, there is no option for "fighting" it in those chasse. But the idea of the two ways to approach anxiety makes sense. And you could do both if you designated times for the fighting vs the avoiding.

Health is also a factror, exposure therapy may not always work and exposing one self to anxiety inducing situations can be detrimental to health.

Cost Benefit Analysis is the right approach. It happens automatically, You will naturally take the path that has to be taken given the current context + your state(which is an outcome of all past experiences). However the examples you told doesn't make much sense without knowing what the anxiety is. Your benefits were concrete but the cost wasn't

It might be more on the fighting side of the equation but my personal strategy for dealing with anxiety is to ignore it as much as possible. I am resigned to the fact that I will often feel anxious but at the same time I recognize I need to get along with my life as normally as possible. So I just let myself recognize and feel the anxiety but then I just tell myself I’m going to do stuff anyway. Most of the time I realize after the fact I was worried about nothing and the fears I had were totally overblown. Seeing this happen over and over has helped me build more confidence allowing me to ignore the anxiety more and more in a self-reinforcing way.

I would add to this a moment of reframing. Is the source of your anxiety real or imagined? Is the degree or severity of the danger as high as your mind has made it? I think there are times one should be anxious, and heed it's warning carefully. Say for example in a toxic workplace, the anxiety you feel when waking up in the morning should be there to warn you not to go, to give you motivation to sign your resignation. There are countless scenarios in the modern world where we could image a sick system or person taking advantage of you and harming your soul, I think anxiety should be there to keep us from adapting to it and instead find solutions. I think the real issue in today's anxiety epidemic is the unsolvable nature of our problems. The antagonist is unpredictably all around us.

I'd say it's typically better to fight your anxiety. I sometimes suffer from social anxiety and paranoia, but I don't let it stop me from living. I think if others can see you're doing your best, even in an anxiety inducing situation, then they will respect you more than if you completely isolate.

But again the point is why? Why fight? Does fighting your anxiety lead to a better life? Then sure do. If fighting worsens your situation then don't fight. Of course it varies case by case

Nice to hear your thoughts on this topic. There’s definitely a solution, but it’s not the exact same for everyone. I suppose life is a bumpy ride so not all plans well… Go according to plan. I suppose that’s why cost-benefit analysis allows you to really consider the options before you decide. A meticulous decision I suppose. So yeah. Have a nice day!

Sorry, but I don't disagree. I've been dealing with anxiety for years and I reached pretty much the same conclusions. The one thing that's hard for me is to put trying to develop relations above trying to avoid anxiety. That's because even though the friendship or love can last for many years but after a break up the anxiety can stay with me for as long as the actual relationship lasted. Is it really worth it to feel like shit for a year or more in exchange for just a chance of a good relationship? Probably still yes but it's been a hard choice.

New channel idea… AnxietyToons. It’s a bad joke. But, Anxiety is no joke! I have suffered with it for years. I always say in this time we live in, if you aren’t anxious it means you’re not paying attention.
