Iv'e always wanted to tell a history teacher this, but try to include history from around 8000+ BCE and 300 CE+ Their both really interesting time periods. As well as this if there is a point where they are studying inventors mention lesser known ones like Nicola Tesla.
JerryDaMiry - Telsa isn't really lesser known. And the problem with teaching specific time periods is that I'd have to be teaching a class specifically about those things. Going into the 8000+ BCE range would probably be better suited for an anthropology or archaeology course due to the lack of real "history" to go over there. 300+ CE would really depend on whose history I'm covering
I watched a video on the scientific things about Santa Claus from how big the reindeers' hooves would have to be to allow flight to how fast Santa would have to go to deliver all the presents. I don't remember the exact numbers, but it basically used science to disprove Santa Claus. We were in high school, so it's not like we were shocked that he didn't exist. I never believed in Santa Claus because I didn't celebrate Christmas until I was a teenager and too old to believe in Santa Claus. (I was raised Jewish, and I have a very strong imagination and would create elaborate stories in my head, so a child who never believed in Santa Claus because they weren't raised in a Christian family and was never taught he was real or whatever the reason is will turn out just fine and still have a strong imagination. (I'm not saying this to brag about how even as a child, I knew Santa Claus was fake. I had ridiculous beliefs as well. Santa was just not part of my culture.)
CosmicSkeptic I think not. Santa has the same concept and effect as the God of the Bible does. Sure it may be a tactic to make Christmas exciting and get children to behave "good" all year but I think you can get the same effect just by being a good parent if not better and you can still celebrate Christmas as others do. Plus it will have more of an impact as a parent. but I think they should be definitely informed of Santa which would cover that even the things you were told as a kid aren't always true but to pass a moral or lesson.
I kind of like the Neil deGrasse Tyson approach as opposed to outright lying. It's the "some people say..." approach to telling them about things like Santa or the Tooth Fairy. "Some people say that on Christmas Eve, Santa brings gifts to all the children of the world". It allows them to believe and eventually critically assess the story without actually lying to them about it.
Hey, I'm a Catholic and I personally love your point of view. You are so intellectual and well spoken. As a 16 year old, I can just say there are few people around like you in our generation. Do keep up the great work!
@AquaticBoardwalkEngineer Catholics believe in scientific stuff like Evolution, heliocentrism, a spherical Earth, and all that stuff. The Catholic Church has issues, but their stance on science isn't one of them.
They hate condoms. If we had a cheap or free way to tell when a woman is ovulating, Catholics would probably make it so you can only have sex whenever she's ovulating. They believe the sole purpose of sex is procreation, and condoms and birth control prevent that.
I'm glad that a young brilliant person is getting attention on RU-vid it shows that more people are awakening from the slumber of religion. Skepticism and thinking without fear about even the dearest and more soothing beliefs is liberating.
Yes. I do believe you should lie to your kids about Santa. Here's why: My parents always told me santa was real, I specifically remember my dad relaying an anecdote about seeing Santa look in his window and I also remember hearing thumping on my roof (which was probably falling snow of the giant tree in our front yard) on christmas eve. It made every christmas exciting... Until I was 10-11. I remember spending that entire christmas season trying to rationalise the existence of the man, (maybe to hold onto my childhood, maybe to prove my friends wrong), but I couldn't. I remember looking out my window on Christmas Eve begging Santa to give me a sign, anything to let me know he was out there... to no avail. My parents came in to wish me goodnight and seeing me looking out the window they were like, "What's up?". I turned to them and asked them straight up if Santa was real... and after a 5 second delay, my dad said no and my mom said yes lol. Then they both said no. My mom started to cry, and that sort of threw me over the edge. We talked for a bit about why we hold up the myth. Its all about letting kids be kids. But they also said its about questioning everything and critical thinking because sure, puberty marks the biological time you start becoming an adult, but I FIRMLY believe when you debunk Santa by yourself... that's the time where you start becoming an adult mentally. And now that I reached that point in the video, you agree with me. Props.
Such a wise head on such young shoulders. When I was 17 (and that was in 1970) I was an opinionated git, I though I knew it all when in reality I knew nothing. I wish you well my friend, you deserve every subscriber you have and many more.
I have watched most of your videos , although I found your channel few days ago. Keep it up and don't go easy on them , I'm like a single light in a very dark universe , where I live Muslims say music is even forbidden , if anyone finds out about me being not religious it'd cost me my life , so remember how lucky you are and raise your voice for those like me who can't express a single word. I'm also 17 and abandoned religion 3 years ago. Good luck!!
Hello! I thought you might appreciate some kind words so here I go; Your voice is incredibly soothing to listen to (Not in a creepy way but also kind of?) and it makes listening to you theorising and explaining things a lot of fun! You are always so kind and reasonable. I know your reasons for it as you explained them in a video, but I think you deserve more credit for it. It's also a nice change to listen to someone respectful instead of someone who keeps ridiculing and belittling others. Your arguments are always backed up by facts and solid ground. It's really nice to hear someone not only explain what they think of something, but also why. Followed by examples of facts. Well done. You seem charismatic and a good conversationalist, although your channel isn't as large as others, you don't have the underlying hint of awkwardness most smaller channels have. You are also handsome, just thought I'd bring it to your attention. Have a lovely weekend!
hopefully the global community will grow out of deistic & theistic religion more importantly, hopefully, the world will replace it something more effective at morality and social glue. hopefully more people can develop healthy bonds with neighbors in circles small and astronomical,
I love Sgt. Peppers, the Beatles and the Doors are the two biggest influences on me getting into writing music and playing guitar/other stringed instruments
Ahh! Yes! I'm certainly in agreement with you about stating that parents should give respect to where they expect it from. That commandment has empowered and mislead too many parents throughout the years LOL #SeriousThough
Late in learning about your channel and this post, but as a mom of 2 young children would like to add my perspective on the Santa Claus issue. Since he was about 4, we have had conversations with our son that generally start with "some people believe..." We use this technique when discussing Santa Claus, religious beliefs and opinions. So far this has worked well in allowing him to explore his own thoughts about such issues and, although he is still young (now 6), we try to press him on thinking through his opinions/beliefs. This has also helped us in dealing with religious family members as we emphasize that it is okay for people to have different beliefs and opinions on things, thus it is okay if a classmate believes in Santa Claus and he does not and it is okay that Grammy and Pappy believe in god and that mom and dad do not, etc. This has also led to great conversations about the difference between beliefs/opinions (ideas that are not absolutely shared and cannot be scientifically proven) vs. facts that can be proven with our current best science. (For those of you counting, our 2nd child is only 2 and thus still working on forming sentences, so the "some people believe..." conversations will have to wait.)
The music was great. I loved the whole thing. The birds wow. The logo video. Not to mention the content. Glad to see my patron dollar going to such good use.
It was while watching a Holy Koolade vid that I was cross-linked to one of your vids. Cool that you bring it full circle. : ) Keep up the awesome work.
"I think that faith schools are divisive and they teach children about our differences rather than our similarities." Well put. I didn't even go to a catholic school but they forced beliefs onto us and encouraged ignorance rather than to challenge beliefs. Im so glad to be in college now
hi, I dont know if you read your comments but I would just like to say that I love your channel after only discovering it today. Please continue making videos. You inspire me and I get lots of joy from watching your videos. thankyou and congratulations on 20,000 subscribers! Hopefully many more!
I love the mystique around Santa Claus. Even better, when kids start to work out that there's something afoot. A sort of rite of passage, as for me, there was a definite pre-santa and a post-santa period. And I was like, 5 or 6 (quite late by today's standards), and I still remember it clear as day. When 'the question' is put forward, instead of 'yes' and 'no', maybe try 'what do you think', and 'how do you know'. And yeah, Hitchens was one glorious bastard.
Santa is not a lie. Hes is a fairy tale, he is poetry, he is the creative hope that will always have a place in the world. I will be your Santa. What did you want for Christmas? Remember to get a tree and leave the milk n cookies.
Snazzy hat. But in all seriousness, congratulations on 20,000 subs! Already you're nearly at 30 k. I really appreciate the way you handle your responses to people, and how you are able to look at the other side without bias. A very admirable quality.
We elected to "lie" to our kids about Santa when they were very little, then I used it as a lesson in doing the right thing for its own sake rather because you will be praised for doing it. Basically when they were old enough to ask if Santa was real I told them the story of St. Nicholas how he quietly and anonymously giving money to those in desperate need (doesn't matter if that story is real or not). Then I told them that they have the opportunity now that they are old enough to understand to continue on the spirit of selfless giving and by doing so they are helping to make Santa "real". When my oldest reached that stage I recruited her to help be Santa for her little brother so we could keep that sense of wonder alive in him until he was old enough to understand. It was wonderful to see her feeling all grown up (as any 5 year old does when they are let in on an adult "secret") and she kept the secret for two years. Her little brother didn't have a younger sibling to play Santa to, but he did have younger friends in the neighborhood. We gave him presents the next year to give to the parents of two of his friends saying that these were to be labeled as coming from Santa since he didn't want them to feel bad because they didn't get him anything. He just knew they really wanted a given toy and he wanted them to have it.
Under 5 days after posting your 20k you've reached 30k, that's Awesome! Love your stuff, great ideas and thoughts, excellent responses, and you articulate so well. Please keep it up, amazing job! ^_^
How does it feel to have the sudden burst of followers? I've followed you for a couple months now, but have noticed the sudden rise in subscribers. Naturally, I love the rise myself, as you deserve every follower. But just a month ago you hit 20,000, but now 60,000. Congrats mate.
I have been watching Holy Koolaid for awhile now, he is good! Also, Joel Osteen as your favorite actor... bahahaha. nice one. Congratulations on the 20K!
GreenmanDave It's crazy! His intellect is high and i was an Atheist at age 15. I'm yet to disagree with anything he says and regard him as one of the best Atheist RU-vidrs.
I find it hilarious that 2 weeks ago he uploaded a 20,000 subs video, and now he has basically 40,000 hahah. Keep it up Alex, you're clearly doing it right!
Congratulations brilliant Sir, also congratulations on now gaining 14,000+ subs in the past 6 days dayymn. I am also a fan of your rad guitar skillz, as I myself play. Cheers lad! (I tried to sound English for you smh)
Just found your channel yesterday and i absolutely love your vids. I'd say congrats for hitting 20k, but i guess i'll just save that for the 30k mark in another day or 2. ^^
Almost 30k subscribers, meaning you need to do the 3rd one ;) Question time, pie or cake? :) Now, real question, have you read Terry Pratchett's Discworld? Have you read The Science of the Discworld books? I find interesting that in the disc, gods created the fossil record to actually trick future archeologists.
Wow, about just a few days ago was the time when I asked my partner what he is thinking about Santa, and if we would have child in the future what he thinks, how we should handle that? I don't really wanna tell my children lies, but I would like to tell them the moral back of it. At the end we ended up in this: We will tell about Santa as a legend, that people saw him as a good followable person, the act he did was so good that people nowdays still salute him as clothing up like Santa Claus and bringing presents. And if he also want to share that good, that fantastic feeling of getting something from Santa, he/she can do it too by packing up unwanted toys to a shoebox, then giving it up to charity.
We raise all of our children with the awareness that fairytales are just really great stories and nothing more...whether it's Santa or Jesus or Hansel and Gretel. Our two-year-old has taken to trying to convince us that WE'RE wrong and Santa is absolutely real because we have a chimney. I'm pretty sure it's the first time in history that a 2-year-old has had to fight to convert his parents to Santa's side.
