I am waiting for the 16-inch Apple Silicon MacBook Pro, thank you very much. You are crazy if you have a 16-inch wanting to move to a base-model MacBook Air. If I were to switch, my mac of choice is a Mac mini. I just got a 2018 15” MBP with Vega 20 graphics. For me, yes, that’s not as good, but it’s powerful enough. Most people that bought a intel macbook (i think) really needed a laptop for whatever reason, i had a discussion with my dad back in the PPC to Intel days, he bought a 2006 high-res powerbook g4, the last great stand of the powerpc laptops, 2 weeks before the introduction of the intel macbook pro, i asked him why did you do that? He told me that, buying a computer, is like getting on a train, do i take this one, which has awesome specs, but the later one may have even something better, and if you are in that mindset, you could wait forever, because the current models will eventually be replaced always with something better, he needed a laptop right than so he bought one. I think it was a great bit of philosophy from him. I have my retina from 2012 and it works just fine for me, i still get 4 hours of battery life on the original battery and it does all i could ever ask from a laptop so i will keep that thing around until its dead.

Nope, just bought a 16inch. M1 is just not gonna cut it for ML engineer/ coder and other users. The amount of hassle you have to deal with is just too much at this point. Benchmark is just not representative, stop using benchmarks and video editing tests to represent the whole demographic. If you are just a video editor, light laptop user, you can do it on any laptops, just go buy a M1 air. If you are not, buy an intel Mac. stop spamming how M1 is beating the intel chips. M1 is the future, but it is not mature enough for everyone to use. This is an excellent video to show those who are spamming these benchmarks are wrong, they are just misleading people onto the hype train. Wait for M1X or even M2, now there is absolutely no problem just stick with intel Macs.

I bought a 2020 imac 27" with the i7 10th generation 8 core chip. THe only reason I brought it was because my 2013 iMac was struggling with final cut pro, and I needed an upgrade badly (or so I thought). As it turns out, the 2020 iMac I got is only a little better than the 2013 iMac I had (and in fact seemingly a little worse with logic pro X). Needless to say I'm greatly dissapointed that I didn't wait for the iMac 27" apple silicon models to come out. What's doubly disappointing is that given how the silicon macs are running roughly the same price as their comparable intel macs, I suspect the ressale value of intel macs is going to completely take a dump. So I 'm stuck with this iMac for at least 3 years. The only bright side is that by the time I'll be willing to fork out a bunch of dough on an upgrade, the new models should be amazing.

I reluctantly bought a 16” MacBook Pro undervalued when my 13” kept bricking when doing (BASIC iPhone quality) video editing. My workflow is almost all apple products (logic and final cut) with some light sheet music creation, nothing too intensive. When I saw the performance on the mini, I sold my old 16” (for a profit!) and bought the base model mini and it does everything I need. I didn’t need the graphics or anything fancy on the 16”, but felt like I had to get it just do some light editing because the 13” was so terrible at it. If you’re like me, and have a 16” simply because basic tasks in things like final cut and logic/GarageBand were too intensive on your old machine, and you don’t need the upgraded graphics, MAKE THE SWITCH! I don't think the top spec intel macs are going to depreciate much, due to the number of people that still need to run x86 software. (Virtualization, windows, docker, etc.) That said a lower end intel mac (say a 4gb air) is going to drop in price more significantly and fairly soon.

@@knivesandfire1 Since it depreciated so fast initially, I imagine another year or so won't do much to the trade / resale prices. We can just keep getting the frankly still excellent performance of the 2020 Intel until the replacement comes out, then trade in at roughly similar losses to what we'd get if we sold now. I think there are some situations where it might make sense to go from a 16" to something like an M1 MacBook Air. Some people presumably bought 16" models for the better performance, but find the size and weight to be a negative. Sure, the M1 version of the 16" will probably be amazingly fast, but not everyone needs to wring every bit of speed out of their computer. For some, it might be that the M1 MacBook Air or 13" MacBook Pro has now reached the point where it is more than fast enough, and people would rather have something smaller and lighter.

The keyboard is nicer, the display is nice, the speed is phenomenal, and I cant get over how much lighter this Air is. I wanted to dump the Intel Macbook before the prices tanked and it was worthless. Glad I did. Thanks for your insight on this stuff. you still are forgetting screen size and for many that is important. I still use an old 2011 Quad i7 just for the matte 17" LCD. If I could trade even my 17" for a 10X faster 13" I would not do it. I want my 17" display. I also want a laptop that I can replace the HD in. My 17" uses SATA and most of the newer laptops use some form of PCIe and can be upgraded. The New M1 are, you get what you bought and nothing more. External storage is easy with the Mini but not with a laptop. I also need to run programs that lost support in 10.15 or above. Another reason not to get the M1.

I heard they upgraded the Mac Mini the same day my $1099 Mac Mini arrived. I wouldn’t trade it because I’m a programmer and have my own business and it’s easier to sync with my MacBook Pro 13 inch. I’d have to replace both and the compilers I use may not work yet on M1. And I already decided on the $1099 Mac Mini based on what my needs were at the time I bought it. It may be faster (as people telling me to upgrade has told me), but I don’t see a reason to just trade in my MacBook Pro I just bought this time last year. It still holds its usefulness to me.

202x Intel MBP user here, I probably will get an Air for my home use, but as a backend developer, there is no way even for apple to fulfill all the missing instruction sets from x86. (If they do then it’s defeating the arm simplicity design concept. ) For someone using Nodejs as an example, it is a complied (done by nodejs team) language from C, that just means the instructions that they used in C were fully supported, for other older/prime languages this will not be the default case. Also, I think I can say for most enterprise developers here that Arm is not going to replace x86 anytime sooner for lots of reasons. Plus I don’t think Intel can’t make a similar structure to boost x86 efficiency.
