What do you think? Are any Intel Macs still a good value? Be sure to check out Filippo Loreti, since the filming of this ad spot they've informed me that their discounts available with my link in the description are actually up to 70%!

It’s sad to see, but good riddance to Intel for their greedy scheme of limiting innovation. I’m thankful as a consumer that both AMD and Apple have finally brought breakthrough technologies while Intel stays in quad core 14nm+++++++++++++

After some of the reviews that I have seen thus far, I would say the only intel macs to get are the ones that don't have the M1 chips and the 16 MBP is a big if.

@@AppleReviews Exactly my point, and if you need a MacOS for some reason, buy a PC with special hardware, and build Hakintosh Have u seen how motherboards of new macs are build ? Like one component, everything is soldered, T2 chip is inside !!! M1 chip, and I'm sure that every other chip is serialized, like Apple love to do. Unless it is a simple fix, like replacing a bad capacitor, there will be no repair for this MacBook line, and SSD will fail after few years.

Oh this has always been going on with anything Apple. Macs in general on ebay are absurdly priced -- like take this Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro from 2009 with 4 gigs of ram and 256 HDD for $220. Realistically, the "seller" should be paying the "buyer" to haul away the garbage. I'm going to spare the link or else someone might get a funny idea and actually purchase it. Yeah you could upgrade it... but at that point you're dropping another $150 and installing Windows or Linux on it to at least run a modern OS on it. Just drive to your local university and check in the dumpsters and you're bound to find a treasure trove of computers with Core 2 Duos

Just as a point of perspective, please try to remember there are things that the new M1 Macs won’t do: If you use BootCamp, Parallels, VMWare, VirtualBox or even Docker, and you want to stay on MacOS (for now) Intel Macs are the only game in town. I can say, as a professional web developer, I can say more than half of my day-to-day professional workflow requires running Linux in a virtual machine, and M1 Macs are not an option.

The 16' MacBook Pro is still worth it. It's got the better/bigger screen, faster GPU performance (even with the base model), better speakers and you get Windows 10 legacy support if you intend to run older applications or games that don't work properly on macOS. The new M1s are great and I'm certain in a few years from now no one will ever want to buy an Intel Mac again, but for the time being the 16' still serves a purpose.

One other important thing to mention when buying used laptops, that's overlooked , is that it comes with no 1-2 year free warranty unless you pay extra. These items are costly and can go faulty after a few weeks and you will have lost all that money!! Apple Repairs are expensive too !!! Something to consider when not buying new items !! Also battery health will be much lower than when new.

I’ve built a computer this year and bought a gaming laptop. My laptop is a Dell G7 with a 10th gen i7 and a 2070. The computer I built is a 10th gen i5 1660ti. My desktop out performs my laptop and my m1 MacBook Pro outperforms my laptop in world of Warcraft with more stable frame rates at higher resolutions (shadows set to low). I was actually shocked at how good the m1 MacBooks are. Just saying my dell g7 feels like it’s on fire constantly in any game, at idle ..lid shut doing nothing and when turned on doing any type of game it sounds like It’s ready to blast into space and discover new planets. My MacBook Pro gets warm in games but nothing like my dell g7 and again will constantly sit at 60fps no dips under 58 FPS where my dell will fluctuate from 150 in some areas to 40 in others (if I had to average it out I would say about 70 FPS but constant dips into the 40s) I can honestly see myself buying Macs exclusively from now and and having a random windows machine around for specific games. As far as my laptops go I’ll be sticking to Macs after the experience I’ve had with the m1..I paid $200 more for my Dell g7 and I’m so much happier with the MacBook. I’m aware there’s a difference in classes of these laptops but I can play world of warcraft for 3 hours on my MacBook Pro unplugged and still be above 85% battery and my dell g7 can be off the charger for no less than 30 mins and die using just a web browser ..I couldn’t justify buying a intel Mac. I’ve wanted a MacBook for awhile but for what I do with computers I needed a 15 inch or a 16inch I couldn’t get away with buying one with integrated graphics because I would basically be buying a really expensive Mac that performed like a $400 windows laptop or a helllllla expensive MacBook that a gaming laptop would outperform, M1 macs however completely changed that ..I can use it daily and get a few days out of the battery if using it exclusively for work and 2 days for work and playing games. It’s not just paying for the logo and build quality anymore your buying an all around premium product that makes more expensive machines look like literal hot garbage. I’m sure I’ll regret not holding out for the next generation of apple silicon but now that the price points have dropped and the performance is amazing it’s not like I’m buying a pretty paper weight like it was with intel macs. Also I’m hoping for better optimization in the future and hoping to see even better performance in the next couple of months with these m1 chips.

I’d recommend checking the trade in value of whatever used model you have or consider buying. At a minimum you can recover that amount if you later decided to get a new model. These values will drop also but at least you’d know if you spent $1300 used today and could trade in for $800 today then maybe you can look at your purchase as being a $500 purchase if you decide to flip to M1 later.

Personally, I think the best value for money is the late 2012 Mac Mini. You can get a bunch of them on eBay for next to nothing, and upgrade the RAM easily, and swapping out the hard drive for an SSD or two isn't too hard. It doesn't have USB3, but you can work around that with a Thunderbolt dock, or get the 2014 Mini (though be warned the RAM is not upgradable and upgrading the hard drive is a pain in the neck compared to the 2012 model). And then you can upgrade to an M1 Mini and keep all of your outboard gear.

I’m happy with my 470USD - 2014 15” MacBook Pro (512Gb / 16Gb) that I bought half a year ago after watching many of your videos of “which MacBooks are the best to buy now” 😄 It was a substantial enough upgrade from my 13” 2012 unibody and it will definitely last me for a couple of more years until I need to get a new laptop and it will probably be the newer apple silicon one.

The annoying thing about the used market right now is that you have basically three choices for laptops: 1. Pre-2015 Macbooks 2. Macbooks that have thermal issues and/or have butterfly keyboard 3. Macs from the last year that will be more expensive I guess #1 might be the best option because Intel has been so terrible over the last 5+ years unless you really want a retina Air.

I just bought an i5 8th gen Intel processor Macbook Pro 13" 2020 in august, i upgraded to 16GB of RAM and 512 GB SSD, and i really like it but seeing the huge improvement that apple has done in these new M1 macs, now im not sure if i should sell my current mac and buy an apple silicon one. Make a video talking about this!!!! Love the way you analyze situations like these!!! Thank you Luke!!

The used market hasn't really realized the real performance of the M1 and/or they're trying to still get as much as they can before the inevitable crash that's gonna make these older Macs really depreciate in price in the coming months.

If I was looking for a 13" Mac, than I would buy the new M1 model. But if I need a larger Macbook, than I would not hesitate getting a good deal on a used Intel Macbook. It may or may not be faster than the M1 (depending on the specs), but it's still a great machine. Also, running Window natively with Bootcamp is a big plus.

I had to get a Mac and was scratching my head if I should go with used Intel. But came to same conclusion. M1 Mac mini base config was the way to go for me. Im a developer and works great. I have had it for a month and I’m very happy with my decision.

If you benefit from an educational discount, or, have found an interest free £20 per month repayment deal, then the M1 Mac Mini has become a very competitive option to buy from new, compared to paying £550-850 on eBay for a used Intel 2014-2018 version, M1 or not. The used ones are still better than my 2011 iMac whichever way I turn.

This was an excellent overview. My advise would be if, you have requirements where using an Intel mac is preferred then buy the oldest model that meets your needs because it will hold its resell value the longest. Yet, if a M-1 processor will meet all your needs then for laptop users, I would buy an Air laptop and for desktop users buy a mac mini. However, if possible the best advise when dealing with Apple, Inc. is always to wait for the newer models. Sometimes they are better and sometimes they are worst but, either way you then can buy with your eyes wide open.

Even though the performance no longer suggest this, the release of 13'' cannot really depreciate prices of past generations 15'', not to mention iMacs. Maybe higher end older 13'' prices might go down a bit?

I do not think that I am ever going to buy an x86 chip or computer again. I have an i7-10700 desktop. If I needed more horsepower right now, I'd get a Mini M1 and use the systems together. The real plan is to get an M1X, M1Y or M1Z system when they come out. My watch is the Fenix 5+ and really like the health monitoring.

The 2nd hand market in Australia is out of control, a macbook 13" 2014 starts at about $650au for a 7 year old computer..Not enough ram or SSD space and really used battery so there is a few hundred more to spend which brings you to about 50% of an AirM1 which is starting to look like better value at this point.

Honestly for the 15/16" MacBook Pros I think their prices are going to stay far too high up until next year when Apple releases a new 16" with M1X, and then those used 15/16" MacBook Pros will plummet in price because it is going to make absolutely no sense to get an intel based 16" anymore.

You compare 13" to 15" , to me that is a problem. I still use a 2011 17" just because of the 17" and that was the last year. It is also anti glare. I still use Aperture so I will keep an Intel Mac forever just to run it. For people with 32 bit programs the new stuff won't work. I am hopeful my Parallels version will update to being able to run older programs on the new Silicon chips so I can buy a new model and still run the older programs. Until that happens, I am staying with Intel as it works fine for me and what I use it for.
