When I started stockpiling 5.56 all I wanted was MK262, MK318, M855A1 etc. However I couldn’t afford significant quantities of it, and I certainly couldn’t grow my stock AND shoot the stuff. Hornady has done a good job making quality ammo that’s affordable, over time I’ve been able to stockpile a bit of that instead.

Been reloading since 1982, if i have say 10k in factory 556, i stockpile enough reloading supplies to reload 10k. But i don't pass up good bulk deals on factory ammo either, saves me time at the press, just bought 1k M855 for 53 cents a round.

Another consideration for factory vs handloading is the expected use case. Someone running a DMR or hunting rifle can see a lot more benefit out of handloading, and the cost delta between high-quality factory loads and high-quality reloads is far greater than the delta between standard, off-the-shelf factory loads and budget reloads. For example, a MK 262 clone reload can be half to a third of the cost of Black Hills factory MK 262 Mod 1-C. That doesn't account for the cost of tools and time, but at $1.50 to $2.00 a round for factory ammo, reloading can quickly coup the cost of time and tools.

Love that you have some more handloading vids coming One additional negative for me on factory ammo is incomplete powder burn. The stuff is just often not formulated for your shorter barrels A - either you are a fire spitting dragon to be seen by everyone and their mother, or at minimum you are dirtying up your can B - performance left on the table C - as a bonus, I believe precision goes to shit

Don't use tiny barrels. I have one 12.5 5.56. All the rest is minimum 16 1/4. I think, since my barrel and can are clean, I am getting full enough burn. I have a decent stockpile.

I’ve been loading a 7.5 inch ARP with accurate 2200. It burns quickly and reduces a lot of the muzzle signature. It also shoots great groups of sierra 60grain hollow point varmint rounds. I want to get some higher weight rounds to experiment with as well
@firestorm8471
@firestorm8471 19 дней назад
I also have gathered 5 gallon buckets of wheel weights for casting. And if worst comes worst, I have used my own range since 1985. Lead recovery would be no problem with a dirt sifter. You have to think ahead guys. Sounds impractical, but hard times make things practical very fast.
@newscoulomb3705
@newscoulomb3705 22 дня назад
I would also say that it is perfectly valid to stick to established, published book loads when reloading. At worst, those reloads should be at least as good and consistent as factory loads, and it saves tons of load development and testing times. In fact, anyone who is new to reloading should probably do their entire first batch as an established load with ~1 gr under book load maximum (never go below published minimum book loads).

You brought up Hornady's interlock SBR and you've mentioned in another video that it is effective in your setup out to 200yds. I've searched for the effective terminal velocity for it but haven't been able to find it. Can you share that? I've recorded the velocities for my setup but can't put an effective range on it without that knowledge.

And reload smart if it is for SHTF. I mold .358 diameter hard lead 160 grain SWC bullets. I load them in .35 Remington reduced power rounds. But , I have a .357 sizing die so I can use them in .38 spl and .357 mag. I can also size them to .355 for a subsonic 9mm Parabllum.. leaving them at .358 I can also load them into my dinosaur .38/200 enfield revolver. You must think versatility. This one bullet is also quite accurate in all of the rounds except the .38/200 which should be .360 diameter. But even in it, accuracy is acceptable.

Don't forget to account for the time it takes to load a dozen or so rounds then go test and record data before going back and loading a different test batch either adjusting the powdwr charge or changing the powder entirely

Ok so this is what i do. I reload, when i am reloading, lets say 308 and i want to shoot 100 for every three rounds i load to shoot i load 1 more for stock pile. it takes time but i have eventually stocked piled quite a few rounds. I rotate my stock plie although it is stored in air tight containers i still rotate it . I reload enough for the primary rifles i consider needed for civil unrest, apocalypse, no more rule of law, war what ever term you wish to use. so how much do i stock pile? I have 2000 rounds for every gun. YES it takes time to reload YES it take money. BUT in the end i have ammo that WILL WORK IN MY GUNS when i need it. MY plan it works for me something to think about.

Good info as always, Me, at this point getting into the reloading game, just doesn't work. I have family and friends that do, but for the time and investment that it would take for me to get reasonably good at it, I can get a whole bunch of factory ammo. Yeah, maybe not the best, but I mostly run PMC in both of my AR's and I have yet to have a problem with it (that wasn't magazine feeding related). I am going to invest in some better stuff, but in my mind, more is better seeing as how my shooting skills are. PS..the email addy wasn't on the video..

Whatever you decide to use, an overzealous prosecutor will present it in the fashion that your use of hollow points is malicious intent or if you use fmj that the projectile passing through was gross negligence to the public. Advice given to me in the past if I had those concerns and not governed by laws that restrict certain ammunition was to find out what the sheriff or local police use and carry that. To each his own.

Depends on the use case. If I think that down the road I'll be working with a group ....and group ammo.....then it makes sense to be used to a common round and not get all focused on a Gucci handload. Also, one has to ask "do I have more time? Or more money?" And that helps answer the "handloads vs factory" question. And if the answer is "I have neither" then thats its own answer. Get a spear.

Factory is a no brainer...most firearms manufacturers have a warranty clause on shooting reloads.
@unclefreedom213
@unclefreedom213 21 день назад
I don't buy into that warranty BS. All of my guns eat a steady diet of handloads. They only put that, so if you grenade your gun, they're not liable to fix it. But even with fa tory ammo, you grenade it. It's the ammo company that would fix it if you can get them to. I would argue that properly handloaded ammo is more reliable and safer than factory
