We see a lot of cases of costovertebral joint pain in our office. These are the rib-spine joints that sit under the shoulder blade. When irritated, they can range from a frequent annoyance to life-altering pain that won't go away.
In this video, I am going to share something I have learned from seeing hundreds of patients with this issue and how the neck almost always plays a role in the cause and the fix!
Stretch showed:
The "Chair Stretch" would be best. The more you can do it the better - shoot for at least five times daily for 30 seconds with DEEP EASY BREATHS :) - hourly best!

Belly breathing:
• Diaphragmatic Breathin...
this is an old video I have about how to belly breathe - the demo starts at about 4:30 but it might be worth watching the whole thing.

Thank you for addressing this issue, youre the only online source ive ever heard it from, so any more material on this is a blessing, ive been struggling for 6 years i weigh 108 pounds cuz i cant workout in any form, my scapula doesnt move right my hips hurt my clavicle crunches & no doctor or physical therapist has figured out whats wrong & has only given me more pain. I plan to see a doctor of osteopath next 🤞

Hello Doctor, My scalenes on my left side have been a nightmare for years. Several years ago I did have that chest pain, finally went to a cardiologist and after all testing was done, all was normal. He said let me try something and he squeezed my scalenes and I about went through the roof. I knew they were tight even from years before. I have all those trigger points you read about and I absolutely have the scapula pain. It does feel deep under the shoulder blade. After 3 years of stretches massages strengthening shoulder muscles or trying to, now I am in alot of pain on my left side. I do breath with my scalenes left side that I’m trying to correct. I was told by 2 pt’s I had an elevated first rib. I also was told by another just that I had something inhibited etc.. My pain besides that deep gnawing feeling under my scap, the pain is to the right side of that scap that is intense. I also have quite a thoracic pull that came about after doing exercises. It showed curving to the left, scoliotic. I know it’s from what is going on. My ribcage which I have said from the beginning to whoever will listen feels torqued/twisted. I do have a rounded forward shoulder also on the L and some winging. I can’t help but feel something is out of alignment and weak. Can this happen you think with the costovertebral joint out of alignment and the dysfunction tightness of the scalenes? No one has a clue. Also now from all this pull my I have minimal c7 slippage onto t1. Thank you

totally! Some sort of rib cage dysfunction could cause compensation or collateral damage to the scalenes!

Hi Alex, Im from Brazil. Im living with this miserable pain that never goes away. Man thats terrible. When I press inside of my clavicle like you said I feel a sharp pain exactly in the place of my cronic pain between my shoulder blades. This means something to you? Also i have headaches most every day and i can't turn the head so well to the right (where is the pain).
