Have a shoulder labral tear (aka SLAP tear) that you want to fix without surgery? Dr. B shares her experience with the thousands of labral tears she’s seen, the reasons behind them, and whether it means surgery.
Even if they're asymptomatic, SLAP tears are super common in baseball players. The big reasons come from kinetic chain imbalances - a muscle might not be firing properly, or your form is off.
Even though it’s not exclusive to pro sports, Dr. B says that when people take the steps to correct their movement mechanics, only 5 out of 100 people will actually need surgery.
Building a strong foundation for movement will stop putting more stress on the shoulder labral tear, allowing it to start healing. Through improving tissue quality, alignment, and building strength in the surrounding muscles, you’ll have all the keys to healthy, strong shoulders. Coach E will direct you to videos showing you the exercises to do all that. (There are also links in the Resources section below.)
Even if you end up needing surgery, spending a little time with exercises to improve your shoulder function will protect it from further damage.
If this was helpful, hit the like, subscribe, and notification so you can stay up to date with techniques to avoid surgery and move pain-free.

I don't really do athletic stuff, I'm actually a CNA and I got a SLAP tear while at work on 6/13/23. I was finishing a 16 hour shift and had 4 hours left when I got injured from helping a patient up in bed. It was a maneuver I've done a thousand times but I guess this was just that one too many. I didn't realize at the time that I was hurt until the next day when I couldn't move my arm without it feeling like I ticked off a Wookie (always let the Wookie win!). I started a claim, did OT appointments, PT appointments and finally wound up with an ortho specialist but it wasn't the one I was referred to by OT, L&I sent me to a different doctor. Got an MRI, he said the tear was "itty bitty" and that there was "nothing to do surgery on" so he had me do more PT, then cortisone shots which didn't work. It actually made it hurt more for a week or so before going back to the standard. I had 4/10 pain resting and 8/10 after activity before the shots, it went up to 6/10 and about 9.5/10 after activity post shots. I did MORE PT and a couple months later he wanted me to do _more_ shots until I got a 2nd opinion. I got it from the first Doctor I was referred to by my OT Doc, who was HIGHLY recommended by both coworkers and patients that I work with. He said that I'd done all of the conventional treatments but since they didn't work I'd probably benefit from surgery. I took this info to my main Ortho PCP but he brushed it off and even feigned not knowing the other Doctor, emphasizing that we shouldn't "jump straight to surgery" (which in my opinion, 6-7 months later of treatments didn't seem like " _jumping straight to surgery_ " to me) and still wanted me to do more cortisone shots but I worried about any development of osteonecrosis. I had to consult a lawyer about my situation and he confirmed my suspicions that I was getting jerked around and helped me with the right words to get a transfer of care (7 months later!). So now I'm seeing the 2nd Dr, and I'll be getting my Pre-op today (1/16/24). I've been having anxiety and fear and paranoia and the like and idk what to do with myself.

I suffered a labral tear about 8 years ago. I did not have surgery, and was fine until recently, when during a martial arts class, I was hit hard in the shoulder, and it seemed to trigger the initial tear. I now have the same limited movement I had in 2016, and while I can still perform, I cannot do my favorite exercise - push-ups. I was doing about 250 a day, and now I can't do 1 without significant pain. Question: should I wait until the pain subsides to resume, or should I just power through it? I hate to see all the muscle mass start to atrophy. Thanks.

Sir my MRI report shows bucket handle tear involving antero-superior lebrum with displacement of the fragment into joint space- suggesting SLAP iii lession. There is mild separation of periostium from antero-inferior bony glenoid without disruption. Mild supraspinatus tendinosis is noted..... Any suggestions from your side??

@@tonychaaya3330 Wow, one year for recovery! They told me 6 months with 4 months of physio. I purchased the shoulder solution from Coach E and have found it very helpful but I still have daily pain, unable to have full ROM and it effects my sleep. After dealing with this issue for 2 years, it's time to make the decision for surgery. I am much, much older than you so my recovery will probably be a lot longer. I hope that using the exercises from Precision Movement will have me in good shape for the surgery. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I got a surgery done 7 years ago , and recently I got a little pain in my shoulder. The doctor here said just do stretching and use pain cream. Then I was doing doorway stretch and all of a sudden I got a loud pop near my scapula but no pain and now my range of motion is bad and the doctor moved my arm around and it made a big pop. Do you think I tore my Labrum and I need to get surgery again? It’s not really painful. But I definitely have imbalances.

my son 15 has just been told he has There is a 12 x 12 x 2mm (CC x TR x AP ) Hill Sachs lesion. Anteroinferiorly there is a high signal through the anterior labrum from 3-6 o’clock with the suggestion of a small amount of periosteal lifting suggesting a undisplaced anterior labral ligamentous periosteal sleeve avulsion (ALPSA). he had been doing physio for the last 6 weeks before this scan and they want to do surgery. currently he has full movement back and is pain free and his current exercises are done without pain to. just wondering if this program will be suitable to try and avoid surgery and get him back out playing australian football. we are booked to see surgeon next week to talk about the results as so far its only been through physio who says 100% surgery ( i kind of feel it was done in haste )
