Lets take a look inside a 14TB Seagate external enclosure to see what we get. Shucking external drives can be a great way to get amazing performance drives for much cheaper than thay are sold for normally, but you will be sacrificing any warranty to do this.

Been enjoying your videos! Easy to follow and straightfoward info. I switched to Unraid about 9 months ago so still learning a lot, and enjoying seeing different people do things with their servers. I would love to see additional hardware discussions for what you run and why you picked it, perhaps some suggestions for dockers that you like, or any sort of settings or tweaks that you think are useful.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm planning some videos for other projects, not all will be Unraid related but I do plan to make more on it, I like your suggestions.

It’s so sick that those external drives are way way cheaper then just the internal disk that sit in them.

Thank you for sharing, do you know if you can make a second pool of disks but with btrfs to write faster or all ssd pool to write faster not part of the array
@PrimeRedux
@PrimeRedux 3 года назад
With Unraid 6.9 you can create additional pools seperate from the main array, like the cache pool. My cache pool is btrfs raid 1 across two 2TB SSDs.

What are the temps like? I've seen these Run very hot.

Thank you so very much for this fine video! May I ask you if the ST14000NE0008 is a CMR or an SMR Seagate Ironwolf Pro? I just ordered a 14TB Seagate Back up Plus. Thank you in advance! Wishing you all the very best and please stay healthy! Best regards from Sweden!

I believe all IronWolf drives are CMR, and right now anything over 8TB from Seagate will be CMR. BarraCuda and Archive 8TB and under are mostly SMR.

Hi, nice video. I heard the call for "what next" for videos and wondered what hardware you had as that might affect what you could do. I see you have Intel/Nvidia with Asus Z270 mobo, CPU??, Nvidia GTX something. So that means no MacInabox type videos for VMs (boo) unless for old versions of MacOS. If you had a Radeon RX5700 I'd ask for something about getting VM reset working ;-) Do you JUST NAS your unRAID box or do you do VMs?
@PrimeRedux
@PrimeRedux 3 года назад
At the moment I only have one Windows 10 VM that I use for testing, I rareley use VMs anymore but have a lot of docker containers runnong on my Unraid server. I also have no Radeon GPUs.

For what it's worth, I just purchased one of these and got an Exos ST14000NM001G

Do these ironwolf 14 tb pro make constant clicking sound even when idle like the Exos?
@PrimeRedux
@PrimeRedux 3 года назад
Ironwolf drives are usually a lot less noisy compared to Exos. But my own Exos drives arent as noisy as I've had before.

I just got a 14TB drive seagate exos 16 for 200 bucks. If I only wanted to buy the disk it would had been over 300 bucks. no idea why it is cheaper sold as external drive than as a stand alone drive.

Prices have been dumb since many years now.

because they sell them for like triple the cost of manufacturing

How many 14TB Exos and Ironwolfs did you get? Or were they all Ironwolfs?

Hi- what’s your server/raid set up? What do you use it for? Looks beefy.
@PrimeRedux
@PrimeRedux 2 года назад
It's used for all sorts of things, storing all the footage and project data for these videos, my personal GitLab server, I have an IPFS node on there, and a Storj node, Home Assistant, I backup my PCs to it both data and system images, oh and my Plex server too.
@JohnSmith-sh1sy
@JohnSmith-sh1sy 3 года назад
Did you shuck any more of these 14TB? There's probably a high chance of getting an Exos, too, that I wouldn't like, because they are noisier.
@PrimeRedux
@PrimeRedux 3 года назад
I shucked two of these and both were IronWolf. I shucked one more today and it is also IronWolf.

One idea would be to buy a NAS server and some external hard drives. Wouldn't it be cheaper?
@PrimeRedux
@PrimeRedux 2 года назад
It is certainly an option, and you won't be voiding any warranites in that case.

External seagates are like lootboxes. Some get barracudas from them, and some - ironwolfs pro.
@methanoid
@methanoid 3 года назад
Sorry, can't stop myself.... You might consider doing PreClear before opening case up (with external fan to cool) so if it fails it fails before you have trashed the enclosure. Avoids the need to argue with Seagate about cause of failure ;-)
@PrimeRedux

Good idea, yeah!

And put links for where you buy.. maybe you can get affiliate pennies to add up ;-)

I've been meaning to get an affiliate account setup with Amazon, I bought these two drives from CCL on offer but the offer isn't on any more.

Why shuck the case, couldn't you just pull the model number of the drive via smart (smartctl -i /dev/sda ) for example you can get the model number without touching the case.
