Dark Star except they ARE against these displays? I get it not wanting the "marriage is the best thing ever" to be the primary message of a movie or book or show or whatever, but the problem here is that these feminists ignore everything else that makes a movie good, and only focus on the parts they don't like or disagree with, claiming that they are 'problematic' and 'terrible'. Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Tangled, Aladdin, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas- all these movies aren't simply about how marriage is perfect. They are about the importance of strong will, kindness, acceptance for others, courage, selflessness, improving yourself and become a better person, not losing sights of the important things in your life, etc. Marriage is simply the reward for all these things, and whether you agree or not that marriage should be the ultimate reward is really up to you. You don't agree with it, I don't agree with it either actually. But what's important is this is what marriage is in these movies; rewards. Not motivation, not want, but the reward for all the bad things the characters have been through. So the problem here is not that feminists believe that marriage and finding love true shouldn't be the ultimate reward, the problem is that these feminists choose to actively ignore all the things that lead to said marriage of the characters, and consequently ignore all the self-improvement and heroic acts these characters do for themselves and for the people they love, which are arguably the two main messages of those Disney films. Improve yourself, be a good person and always cherish your loved ones IMO are almost always present in Disney movies. So when a feminist ignores ALL the hardships the character went through just because they disagree with the end result and straight out gets the movie's plot all wrong, of course we won't take them seriously. They are ignoring the messages of the movie and greatly reduces it to the portion they don't like, which isn't even significant to the movie at all.

It falls right in line with how "only certain" Islamists/Muslims are dangerous, so to avoid falsely accusing and appearing "racist", we should ignore them ALL including the ones that really are a danger, and OPEN THEM BORDERS! I don't give a fuck if it's "certain princesses" - Knightley and Bell are hypocrites. Especially since their "reasons" for banning/boycotting those "certain" Disney films are not even valid. They don't even know what the films REALLY promote or convey - they just take one aspect of the entire movie and pervert it into some big bad thing that drives their own propagandist agenda.

I actually find women (and people in general) who look down on Cinderella pretty hypocritical and borderline offensive. Cinderella is an ABUSE VICTIM. How can you blame an abuse victim for "waiting around for a man to save her" and call her a "dumbsell in distress"? Would you do the same thing to real victims of abuse? Cause if you would, you have no right of calling yourself a feminist or even a decent human being. I've always looked at Prince Charming as a metaphor for Cinderella being able to get away from an abusive environment and finally being able to find happiness (not because he's a "white rich man" but because she's free). He never actually saved her. She was the one who saved herself. And the movie shows that a couple of times too. Cinderella herself gets the courage to sneak out and go to the ball, she's the one who speaks up and says the slipper belongs to her. How is that sexist and something little girls (and even boys) shouldn't look up to? Edit: another thing I forgot to add: Yes Prince Charming and the Fairy Godmother helped Cinderella but that's also a good freaking message. If you're in a situation like Cinderella's and you feel like you can't escape it by yourself, ask for help. It is in no way embarrassing and it does not make you "weak" or "anti-feminist". Do whatever you can to get away from a toxic and abusive situation.

Bullshit like this only makes abuse victims feel like it's their own fault they are in that position and don't deserve anyone's help and that even if they did ask for it, no one would listen.

@@trumpydog9441 How do you come by the idea that her motivations were completely selfish? Unless you figure that she thought he could somehow give her legs. Although she would most likely know that such a thing would be impossible for him, as nothing more than a human. But, since this is a movie we can never know for sure what her true motivations were. But, in the original Hans-Christian Anderson tale she is already said to be in love with him. (I agree that this "love at first sight" cliche is a problematic element.) She also completely selfless. In the end she has an ultimatum, kill the prince or turn into sea foam. She sacrifices her own life because of her love for him. She clearly shows emotion toward him from the beginning. She is visibly enamored by and infatuated with him when she first sees him, going so far as to point him out to Scuttle. She shows fear when he is drowning. When he is helping her down the beach, she looks back at Scuttle and gives him an enormous smile (I think) because she is so happy to be with him. She is incredibly excited to go on the carriage ride with him and thrilled when he finally learns her name. And, if I remember correctly (which I may not since it's been something like 15-20 years since I last saw the film,) there is a scene where she stares longingly at him from her window on the first night while he is outside playing the flute. Although, in the grand scheme of things, there is no wrong way to interpret the movie. Everyone is going to interpret it differently. I'm just curious as to how you've come to your conclusions.

Cinderella like actually being with the prince and thus becoming royalty in the end is like a reward for the absolute pile of misery and hell she was put through. Meanwhile today everyone's gotta have a top 40 hit song on repeated ad nauseum that even if sung well lacks substance entirely without the right visuals (especially Moana's which has zero impressive visuals to back her up unlike frozen 1-2 at least giving us that much). The actual actions of Ariel are a result of feeling unloved a little, "grass is greener on the other side" and a nice touch of wanting more and/or a different life. Ursula just took advantage of the timing. Unlike say Moana who while her quest is noble her top 40 hit tells us nothing we didn't already get from the storytelling prior. Yes! A group of my classmates once did a project on sexist stereotypes in Disney movies, and they said this about Cinderella. Their main comment for almost each film was "girl waits for a man or needs one to save the day or get what she wants, movie has sexist undertones". It was honestly painful to listen to, especially since they got some plot elements wrong or didn't think things through. For example, they had an issue with the fact that Rapunzel did mostly traditionally feminine things while she was in her tower... What else was she supposed to do? Axe target practice? Spitting into a vase? Wood cutting? Her living space and home situation didn't allow for more than tranquil activities that wouldn't catch any outsiders' attention. Plus, Rapunzel might have done feminine activities, but she was damned good at them. Candle making, sewing, baking, reading about certain disciplines, they were all life skills that she had mastered over the years. I'd bet she could have made a living with them. But no, they're bad because they're stereotypically women's work. And God forbid she needed an extra push in the form of a man to disobey her manipulative mother and make her dream come true.

And like many others in the comments section have pointed out, she doesn't even realize that she danced with the prince until the very next day. So how exactly is this a story of a woman waiting around for a man to save her? These idiots have no idea what they're criticizing

SageofTool it’s not that cinderella is waiting for the man as much as the fact that the man comes along as a solution to her problems. yes she was the catalyst for her own story whic is great. i’m not a feminist. i’m pointing out that the romance and marriage and happily ever after are still portrayed as her ticket to emancipation. what would have happened if the prince hadn’t taken a liking to her? also, there’s no such thing as happily ever after. love and marriage don’t make you any happier. but you’d never know that from watching old disney movies.

So last year I went to a local playhouse in our area to watch them perform 'The Little Mermaid', and in the back of the booklet/program/whatever you want to call it that they handed out to us they had a quick, little note from the director. The director, who was female, said that she wasn't sure she should be directing a musical that's about a young girl who changes herself for a man. She then went on to say that her opinions changed when she talked to her young daughter and her daughter said something along the lines, "I think it's about a girl realizing she doesn't want to be where she is, and she does what it takes in order to go where she wants to be.". I remember reading that and thinking, "I'm not fond of kids, but this girl--I would love to meet her and be her best friend and have tea parties with her." But then I realized, being a woman who is not related to the child, how creepy that would be. And so I settled for simply admiring the girl's logic from afar and being vicariously proud of her.

Feminists: Cinderella doesn't meet our standards! She just sits around and waits for a rich cishet white man to save her! Me: Cinderella has been emotionally abused by her stepmother and stepsisters ever since she was a young girl when her father died. She was forced to work as a maid in her own home and she didn't have anyone to turn to since she was kept isolated from the world for years! Just because she doesn't back talk her abusive step family doesn't mean she's not strong. She could have broken down and given up, but she decided to be kind and mentally strong and it pays off for her in the end. Don't tell me, are you VICTIM BLAMING HER!?!? I'm a pretty big fan of Keira Knightley movies (pretty much any period drama). Two of my favorite films of hers are The Duchess and Anna Karenina. Both of those films involve her cheating on her husband and having kids with her lover. And her new movie, Colette (which I am super excited for) involves her cheating on her husband, as well. That doesn't sound like a good role model. Am I simplifying things and leaving out context? Yes, just like Keira.
@RaleighBecketGipsyPilot
@RaleighBecketGipsyPilot 5 лет назад
Colette's husband took credit for her novels, and he cheated on her first so she figured 'oh, ok, you wanna have sex with other women? I will too, then". Women couldn't easily divorce their husbands back then so she was basically stuck in a marriage she didn't want to be in. And are you honestly comparing ADULT movies to children's movies? No one is showing their child any of these adult movies, she was talking about CHILDREN'S movies and the messages she believes are wrong in them.
@miamonopoly7031
@miamonopoly7031 5 лет назад
Sakura Kasugano I am well aware of Collette’s life. I admitted to leaving out context and simplifying things. And Keira is doing the same thing. I am also well aware that there is a big difference between kids movies and adult movies. Again, simplifying and leaving out context. I know that I did that. Like Keira.

Your Cinderella take is on point. And if Kiera can’t pick up on the fact that one of the main messages of “The Little Mermaid” is that it was BAD for Ariel to give up her voice for a dude, and that that decision put literally everyone in the film in danger (as my parents pointed out every single time we watched it.) then she’s actually just dumb. Like literally unintelligent. I will definitely encourage young women to watch that morality tale rather than Frozen, which has an entire song about settling for a guy you aren’t into and trying to change him....because yeah....that is a great relationship foundation to build on.
@Zarastro54
@Zarastro54 5 лет назад
Well to be fair to Frozen, the "love at first sight" song was put in a bad light, as it makes the larger point to not give everything to someone you barely know.
@ceecee867

I don't think there's a single child that isn't like 'NO' when Ariel gives her voice up. It's clearly not meant to look like something she should be doing, regardless of the outcomes. Is indeed weird she is ok with Frozen when is pretty much the same thing on this aspect. They commit mistakes and do things they absolutely shouldn't do, but it all turns out well in the end (though I would argue Ariel is less 'harmful' since her mistake is made to be much more shocking and is, obviously, totally unrealistic lol).

Dark Star because she wasn't desperate? You didn't watch the movie did you? At the beginning of the movie Ariel didn't sing with her sisters and instead went out with to a wreck to collect new trinkets from the human world. When she was attacked by the shark her bag and what did she do? Instead of running away to safety she DOVE to get the bag away from the shark's teeth even though she could've been easily been bitten and even killed by the shark. She chose her passion over her own life. In case you didn't notice she loved the human world so, so much she was willing to put her life in danger just to save some items that resemble the human world (which is NOT a good thing to do, but that's not the main point here). When she saved Eric from drowning, her immediate thought wasn't to make a deal with the devil (Ursula) to see him, if anything she was content with the statue she got of him. But then her father found her lair and instead of being a responsible father and talking to her about her unhealthy obsession he DESTROYS everything in the lair, the trinkets, the jewellery, the music boxes, the statues- everything. Everything that resembled the world she oh so loved so much and spent SO much time collecting (and probably even endangered her life to get) were gone in mere minutes or even less. How can you not realise that she was devastated at that and not because she wanted to solely see Eric? She was broken, she was hurt, she was angered, and her father didn't try to do anything to comfort her. She was in a vulnerable state of mind that Ursula took advantage of. She told Ariel she could find a way to escape her father and see and interact with the human world, and in Ariel's anger and despair, she agreed to give up her voice. So no, while Eric was a catalyst for the trade, he wasn't the sole reason.

Joel Klimkowski If I may respectfully about Incredibles II; consider this: (warning: it's a bit long!) I thought the movie tied up Mr. Incredible's conflict with heroism and glory/duty-before-others, and thus forced him to come clean to his family in a respectful and introspective manner. He wasn't perfect, but he chose to do better for the kids and his wife, but chiefly, this was HIS decision. He gained agency. Sure, it was subtle, but I liked that it was a key conflict. Mrs. Incredible proved that she was a mom first. She wasn't swayed by the villain's ploy to seperate her from her family, but she also got excited and sidetracked; still, she was always a mom first. I REALLY liked the little details, like the initial argument at the dinner table about what's right versus fair. I liked how Mr. Incredible felt like he'd gotten sidelined AGAIN, and he sorta was, due to all the destruction he caused in his hero days. Frozone and Mrs. Incredible were deemed "presentable" with no regard for what kind of crime they were fighting; it seems there is always spin when it comes to bringing back superheroes. I wish Evelyn could have functioned more as a reflection of the world from the first Incredibles: "We don't need superheroes, we need COPS. You can't abandon reality for your dreams about self-sacrifice--that's how my dad died." Something like that. She definitely needed one more rewrite. Her beother could have served as an excellent reminder of compromise: he is all about giving people hope, she is stuck in the gritty past, and they are BOTH understandable. The ending was kinda eh as well, but that's my biggest complaint. I love both movies. tl;dr - I liked that Incredibles II was about the family coming together to help each other AND Mr. Incredible finally came to terms with his own flaws. It could have been better, but as it is, I don't think it's on the same underwhelming level as something like Finding Dory. But that's just me!

Tbh I hate all this political mumbo-jumbo that people wanna strongly enforce in predominantly children films as if they actually give a damn. If anything, “the little mermaid” actually subtly dismantles the old perpetual ‘ideal’ on the opposite side of the debate, aka on the males’ one - that being the ideal of a man always owing everything to a woman, including the so-called ‘in-the-name-of-love -sacrifices’.. but nooo... the cartoon is misogynistic, cause it’s the girl in this case making a sacrifice for ‘the very idea of love’ (when leaving the whole ‘getting out of the dusty routine’ argument out) Grotesque🤦🏼‍♂️ Plus, Keira frankly comes across as one of those ladies who, before starting to date anyone, would expect the dude to incessantly take her out on dates at restaurants with flowers and candles and shit, being a ‘true gentleman and the man’, so to say😂😂
@ceecee867
@ceecee867 5 лет назад
this!!!!!!!!!!!! I remember thinking EXACTLY this as a child. How cool and different it was that it was a girl running after her love interest and fighting with all she had for it. Only to grow up and see people were shitting on that as well. Oddly enough they're doing what they say they hate the most: trying to control and judge women. So is not ok for a girl to fight for love, as is not reasonable and safe. Nor is ok for a girl to be passive and helped, because that's not 'strong'. Hell, now what.. Usually the role-models they approve are the ones that have the privilege of being brave and bold (a.k.a weren't abused all their lives, but rather encouraged to be outspoken) to achieve what they want that doesn't include another person. So girls have to be exactly what they want us to be in the name of their beliefs and ideologies, wich is what they truly care about, not individuals. God forbid they have children with different thoughts that can ruin the image they want to portrait..

Ariel was one of the first proactive princesses in the early disney canon. She didn't wait around for someone to rescue her. She had a clear dream that wasn't focused on a man and she went to try and achieve that, learning to be careful what you wish for and that someone promising you gold might really be offering mud. Cinderella to my child mind was a story about a girl who was extremely positive despite her predicament, a pure hearted girl whose character made her princess, she treated everyone with poise, saw the good side in things and the prince couldn't help but fall for her charm despite her being poor and dressed in rags, on that note, isn't the Prince's objective to also find a princess? Especially if you watch the third movie, he wanted Cinderella just as bad, why isn't he being villainized for that? Or is it only bad when female led stories are about finding love and a partner? Why is that such a bad message, no one wants to die alone lol, I love those stories, why is this genre being trashed, it's almost as if they hate anything girls enjoy since a young age.

Keira use to be an idol of mine. Yuck, not anymore. I'm so sick of all my fave female celebs turning into the same thing. Bitter, boring feminists who hate EVERYTHING. Everything is *problematic* 🙄

...Did Keira even watch these movies?

Keira's simplistic mind cannot fathom or rationalise the actual messages within those movies. They were already a feminist's wet dream but also a empowerment for abused women and children ... a positive outlook on a bleak situation ... finding the positives amongst the negatives and using those to move on. Keira is not the sharpest tool in the shed so it does not suprise me she thinks along those lines.

You absolutely rock!!! Thank you for your video! In Keira, we have a spoiled woman playing make believe and then getting buried in money entirely because of her looks...and of course perpetuating the uber feminine archetype she finds so off-putting. And yet, she still finds a whole host of things to complain about. GFY Keira. You hypocrite.

I feel at this point, the best thing to do would consist of leaving Keira Knightley, Adam Sandler, Kiera Knightley, Julia Fox on a far away island, like the furthest away island from any form or civilisation.

Arielle was one of my favorite movies as a kid and I always thought that it was pretty clear that Arielle made a bad choice trusting Ursula. At the end she was able to get what she want with her own strength and intelligence, not with the help of a evil sea witch or anyone else. And I always thought the message was that your strength is enough and you don't need help from sketchy people. Arielle had to learn in the hard way but that is what a good story is about right?

Finding Dory took all the stuff Marlin did in Finding Nemo and gave the credit for all of it to Dory.

“Which i think is rather boring” well duh, you’ve been alive for like 30 years so you’ve seen a lot of witches on Halloween. She’s three. This is a novel idea to her. Let her LIVE!!!

I hope Keira's happy now that Disney have turned all their princesses into "YAS Kween SlAy!" girl bosses, that don't need no man!

It's pretty clear, based on how she talks about her daughter, that she doesn't consider her to be anything more than a fashion accessory and a status booster. "Oh, look how progressive I am because my daughter did this! Oh, she's starting to demonstrate her own independence and personal preferences, and that's problematic! Oh, we ban certain movies for completely self-interested reasons, not because of the actual content of the stories." This stuff is like neo-Satanic Panic--we're going to eventually be told that the Die Hard movies promote rape when you play them backwards.

People who blame Cinderella for what happened to her are abuse apologists. Pure and simple.

What a shallow/very feminist interpretation and of the Cinderella movie 😒. It’s like to a feminist: girl+prince=weak woman...I’d argue Cinderella is a wonderful role model of someone who was capable of making the most out of a bad situation while remaining a good person. She genuinely had it hard and very much EARNED her happy ending...And SO WHAT if she found happiness in falling in love with a prince? That’s awesome! She’s a way better example for young girls than half the garbage produced in modern media. 🙄

I'm sure she's happy for her children to watch Feminist Propaganda though AMIRITE. It's all about learning the CORRECT ideologies. Also I'm pretty sure banning your child from watching classic handdrawn animation is abuse.

ariel gave up her voice bc she had nowhere else to turn to for "legs" her daddy sure wasnt gonna give her any bc human = bad. also even if ariel did want to go on land just to be w Eric, whts so wrong w tht? being w someone u love is a natural desire, and sure she didn't know wht he was like but she was genuinely interested in getting to know the man. him being a hottie was a +++++
