I've made numerous comments on this movie already so I'll just make 2 salient points here's: 1) I think Bill Skarsgard 100% has not only the acting chops for this characters but the capability of actually looking like Eric from the comics in terms of his physique and factual structure. Had someone else taken then helm of this movie and actually stayed faithful to the source material, had Eric in the Crow facepaint right from the start and given him that longer, wild black hair, I think Skarsgard would have 100% looked like Eric. Instead... well you see what we're getting. 2) This should have been an original Crow movie, as in it should have been it's own story within the Crow universe with original characters and not cannibalizing the corpses of Eric and Shelly. If whomever made the calls on this one had done that instead of going the reboot/re-imagine route, and not basically shit all over the original story and characters, I actually think this movie would have been received very well, at least in terms of the trailer. After all, the beauty of the Crow franchise is it allows for you to tell numerous stories with numerous different characters because the crow itself can bring back anyone for vengeance. We've seen it in the comics, films, and novels. That's what should have been done with this movie and I really do think if they'd done that it would probably be excellent. It's literally because they are using already established characters and stories from the original Crow movie/comic that people are not happy, because it feels like once again Hollywood is once again grinding an established and beloved movie and story into the ground just so they can shove their "modern audience" garbage down our throats once again.

@nlparadox3890 Well said and no lie detected. There is this trend of Hollywood taken pre-exisiting IP and bootstrapping either a whole new tone, setting, characters traits and lore that was never in the source material. I would not call it adaptation it seem more insidious than that. If feels like a attempt to get the writer or director of that movie's original idea by sacrificing it on the alter of a past IP. For example the Netflix Witcher series. The showrunner never gave a fuck about the source material or character of Geralt of Rivia and instead used the Witcher name and IP to shove the schlock sandwich we had to swallow. I'm not saying this new Crow will be that. I'm just saying I will not be surprised if this movie and or new franchise takes the same turns as properties like the Witcher did. Thank you for your insightful comment and support. I appreciate it.

Completely agree. 1. Good actor, bad stylization in general. 2. Agree, they could have started a new story with original characters, perhaps referencing Eric and Shelly in the movie to tie things together, for continuation. Given the tragic real life events of the original The Crow movie, they should have left Eric alone, respecting Brandon Lee tragic demise on set.

The most disappointed was Shelly being linked to a paranormal occult instead of it being a random act of violence. Not to mention Bill Skarsgard lack luster wardrobe and aesthetic, when you think of the crow you think of an undead goth sutured together with duct tape in a turtleneck with freely stranding hair, not some shirtless skinhead with a ratty mullet? They certainly turned me off the visual aesthetics for sure but the choreography seems alright.
@yikesreviews
@yikesreviews 5 месяцев назад
100% agree with you on all fronts. The choreography is on point. I'm a little turned of by the art direction of the film and the music choice for the trailer. I also liked how in the 90's version when The Crow met another perpetrator of the crime he was able to experience the pain he and Shelley experienced along with the perspective of the perpetrator. It was a great way to move the story along not through exposition but through showing the story unfold from Eric's powers and perspective. The Supernatural Shelley aspect of this new film feels like they are going to do more exposition and less showing. I don't know. Thanks @thememays3285 for your great comment and support.

The first Crow movie had even more violence than what they showed, it's just that they removed a really large violent sequence because that was the part of the movie where Brandon Lee was shot, they originally wanted to stop production of the movie but Brandon's family wanted it to continue, so they did but removed the sequence of the movie where Brandon was shot and killed so not to make the family relive Brandon's final moments over and over

@@yikesreviews I like the '94 film for what it is. But we're not getting that now. Styles have changed now. The new one's going for a modern approach which is totally fine to me. I honestly don't understand the stupid obsession people are having with the '94 movie. And it hurts to see that most of those people aren't criticizing this new movie based on the trailer. Most of them just say "RIP Brandon Lee" or "He gave his life for that movie", but when asked about what is so bad about the new one, they just give one of the stupidest answers I could have ever seen. I truly feel bad for Brandon Lee since he could have led a great career. But most of the obsessed fans don't even want to consider that there can be another Crow movie. Heck, they don't even want to hear criticism about the '94 film.

@@samil679 It's that"stupid obsession" that made tha studios remake the movie, they are doing it all the time lately, most of the films are remakes, to draw nostalgic viewers in the cinemas. (As if theres not imagination to produce something new.) 7:59 I believe the production and the actors are great and it will be fun, especially for the young viewers, it'll just leave a bitter taste to gen x and the millennials who identify to the first movie. It's not that it should be untouchable. The thing is how they do it. For example after Heath Ledger, they had a completely different approach to Joker, they didn't shoot the same movie with different actors. In the Crow's case its the same story. You don't touch something that is classic when you don't offer something new. And the aesthetics is not something new. I'd prefer if they digitalize it and enhance the image and put it on the cinemas again, than remake it. It's not theater, It's cinema. Could you reshoot "gentlemen prefer blondes", you could. Would that make sense? No, you have a classic already! Why spoil it for easy money?

the film is ruined by Eric being a criminal or rehabilitated person (the scene where there in pink clothes) and Shelly sees or is part of a group of very bad people which gets them killed, this ruins the whole idea of the Crow about an innocent couple getting killed, and makes reader sympathizes with the character's action. If this is the plot of the new one I can see a lot of comments saying none of this would have happened if Shelly wasn't there or videos explaining its another movie like John Wick.

@skullium5920 Thanks for the comment and support. I'm always torn between whether every story, film or game should be remade for modern audiences. I'm of the mind that it depends how the new adaptation will treat the legacy and source material from which it is adapting its work. I just hope and pray this adaptation is not going to slapdash the story of Eric Draven for box office appeal. I'm trying my best to not judge things from the first blush. But I'm only human.

Brandon Lee gave everything for that role. Literally. He wanted to get out of hid father shadow and to be known only as Brandon Lee instead of "the son of Bruce Lee, Brand Lee". That role meant everything to him and it shows. Also the tragedy behind the scenes made the movie such a cult. Visually it was a great adaptation of the comics, even tho it left out some scenes that would've made it too fantasy. The gothic noir atmosphere enhanced the movie way more. Only Proyas could do such an awesome job. I mean he made Dark City. The soundtrack was also a big plus for the movie especially that big names submitted great tracks for the soundtrack. The original movie wasn't just a movie, was a thrill ride, was an experience, was a tragic poem and it should've been left alone, appreciated and respected. But today's Crapwood formely known as Hollywood, does nothing but to disrespect and destroy what this movie and Brandon left behind. When it comes to movies that had depth, vibe, meanings and style, 80's and 90's were the kings.
@yikesreviews
@yikesreviews 5 месяцев назад
@rosumparat you hit the nail right on the head. Some modern studios have shown embers of what the quality of filmmaking used to be back in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. A24 comes to mind as one such studio. This period of filmmaking reminds me of the period back in the 60's when the quality of the films stagnated and the juggernauts of the box office "Westerns" were on the decline. Then the '70s rolled around and we had masterpieces like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Halloween, The Godfather, The Poseidon Adventure, Network. I could go on and on. I think this period of Crapwood as you so eloquently put it is necessary for true auteurs and visionaries to be born from. I hope I can witness this rebirth. The problem with this is they have already tried to sequalize/re-tell The Crow so many many times before, even so far as a short-lived TV series. It's been done. It's a dead franchise due to over-saturation of bad stories, bad wannabe crows (remember Edward Furlong as The Crow?!?), and honestly, no one asked for another reboot. What is this crow going to do that the others didn't-- cancel the bad guys for being problematic?!? This is another entry into a franchise that started and ended with Brandon Lee.

A very balanced commentary. :) 1) The lead might be a good actor -- but he's mis-cast. Like Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly. 2) The original and the TV show cast martial artists in the lead. They know how to move. The new guy lacks the "pop". 3) The trailer actually bored me (it's 40% longer than the original movie's trailer). A bad sign. 4) I wish they'd cast Tom Holland. Think about it for a sec. Imagine him playing it with a simmering, understated psycho edge. And better make-up and costuming.

Yeah @flickeringgreenflame8493 but they said the same thing about Michael Keaton when he was Batman in the 80's. The same narrative was made for Daniel Craig as Bond and Heath Ledger as Joker. I trust Bill Skarsgårds passion and acting ability to connect me to the story of Eric even if he does not look like Brandon's version. He is not suppose too as much as I want him too. I am going to try to keep an open mind, but The Crow OG was freaking monster that dominated pop culture and became a modern dark fairy-tale. However, it seems completely unnecessary to give this new iteration of Eric Draven extended lore when it has previously been established that the curse/gift of the raven is not bound to the soul of any one person. The Crow, a sort of dark angel of vengeance, who will bind to the soul of a person who was painfully wronged. Therefore, Bill Skarsgård's character could have been named anything and then have the story tweaked, so it could have been its own tale instead of another stylized Hollywood retelling. I just hope respects are paid to Brandon Lee and the OG Eric Draven/The Crow. (Note: i edited my comment to fix grammatical errors)

Hot damn @cjames22dox. I would have loved it if they made this hero a random character and not Eric Draven. They did this in the Crow City of Angels (1994) film with Ashe Corven. But like with everything we need to update this for today's generation and I don't know why Hollywood is so fascinated with this Suicide Squad Jared Leto/ DMC (2013) Aesthetic. I equate it to the Killmonger Dreadlock hairstyle we give to every single Black or POC Character. There are more aesthetics out there than just that one. They should have made this movie. In fact it was audience interest that kept driving this project to hopefully happen over the past what? 19 years or thereabouts? Well we got it. I think it looks really good. I dont think it harms Lees legacy in any way. Using the character of Eric Draven and Shelly from the original source material isnt a problem. This is an adaptation of the very same story this same production company did in the first film. In fact in some aspects are a little closer to the source material of Obarr than the first film was. The writer and director of the first film left out Erics drug issues. For whatever reasons they had for that ultimately I dont know but they did. Lee also had a character from the original source material removed from the scipt because he felt it was a stereotyped character that was asian who had the power to take Dravens abilities away. This one seems to have brought back in the characters drug past to an extent to develop a different story this time and flesh out the character more. Also his look is very different than that of Lees character from the first film. Its a little closer to the original source material. In fact in the first film Proyas and Lee didnt even like the look they were using. Felt it was little to clean and he even slept with the makeup on so it looked more aged and dingy to look good on camera. This movie changes the look also. So the critics panning these things that are changes are way off base. But are they? Maybe not. They like what they like and have preferences. That's fine. But at the same time if others like what they see dont knock them for it. And I think this film will do as well as City Of Angels did which was a hit that grossed the studio a profit and was actually the only decent Crow sequel. The rest were garbage and nearly destroyed the franchise as a whole. This has a great lead actor and the cinematography in this is very good. The action is paced nicely and they gave a nice nod back to the 90's film in a few spots to show proper respect. And personally I liked the Post Malone Ozzy track in this. It helped drive what we were seeing onscreen. Overall I give the trailer a high rating. Hopefully the rest of the film is as good. Im ready to see it. EDIT: I noticed another poster that said the look for the current character is inspired more from one of Obarr later Crow comics called The Crow Wild Justice I do believe is what the poster is referencing? It does look like that is the inspiration for this characters look very much. But everything else is using the Draven character I assume. Seems they melded a lot of different Obarr material in this which is cool. Makes me want to see it a little more.

Well, there are two problems with this Crow: 1st real problem is Rupert Sanders whose adaptation movies all didn’t do well, so right off the bat. This iteration of The Crow may not garner the fanfare Rupert may be trying to establish a name for. So, I’m calling it as not even reaching the original The Crow cult classic status. The 2nd problem are the fans, sort of. Though fans are coming out in droves sharing the dislike of this new The Crow. It begs to ask, how much are these fans really fans when the original source material never had its character in The Crow, Eric Draven, white or pale faced. Color covers showed flesh color. Lee’s Crow pale, white face was only that movie’s adaptation of that particular character. What you saw in the comics was just black and white, which made Draven look pale. The Crow character was never [intended] to be just one character. There were up to 14 protagonist that take up the mantel of The Crow and they almost all had the same black lines designs around the eyes and mouth, and their natural flesh color, I think except for one, who did sport white face and the Crow black lines. Eric Draven was only the initial Crow. Meaning, there could/should be sequels to better improve the new “The Crow”. I just hope they adapt the skull cowboy, that shows itself, sometime some where.

Thanks @eddietowers5595 for the insight and informative comment, admittedly I haven't read the comic and I'm 100% a fan of the '90s movie, I'm aware that the '90s movie strayed a good deal from the comic (friends who are fans have told me.) so I actually look forward to if this 2024 version might be more faithful to the comic as a whole. I feel that the studio is trying to have its cake and eat it too. They know the legacy of the Brandon Lee film and its most ardent fans which is why they made sure to deviate from the 90s movie as much as possible. But also how many Crow fans are there? And how many will turn up for this version? There hasn't been a Crow movie/series in about two decades. So who exactly is this movie for? Regardless, I truly do believe in the skills of Bill Skarsgård and the other actors to make this movie its own unique thing. I'm just not sure if it's for me personally. And that's ok too.

Exactly no one asked for a live-action DMC. Mr. Toriyama created new content to wash away the stain that film had on his work and cinema. I'm not going to mention Avatar 2010. That cut me deep. Hollywood never cares about the creators or source material. They are concerned about how they can pimp out and squeeze every last drop out of the IP. Thank you @moiserosario433 for your comment. I appreciate it.

@@yikesreviews problem today is you have writers, directors, actors, etc that never lived. They never traveled, had a shitty job, or put in effort. Instead of seeing veterans pointing out mistakes in scenes that involve combat, we get regular people who have jobs, hobbies, and interests including playful kids pointing out what's wrong with scenes. The only current media that offers refreshing ideas for people 10-24 that is positive is anime. From Dog Signal showing people how to be a better pet owner to Bocchi the Rock on the struggles on being a performer (doesn't matter what music, plays, or comedy, real entertainers felt it).
@yikesreviews
@yikesreviews 5 месяцев назад
@@moisesrosario433 That is true in some regards. It takes failure and living a little bit to craft a story worth seeing. I also think that Hollywood has let analysts and business suits drive the direction of what is worthy to be made and what is not. There are a ton of creative, intelligent people in the industry who are not getting their voices heard for a myriad of reasons. Anime has the luxury of being more accessible now not only because of technology but because creators were able to tell their stories no matter how different those stories were to the culture they came from. We need to let creatives create and trust what they create may not be a hit on opening day or that year but we need to nurture the talent so that we can get another Godfather or another Bocchi the Rock. I need to check out Bocchi by the way. Thanks again @moiserosario433, it's always, a pleasure to read your insights.

I do not know if I can hold back my nostalgia, the crow even the second one are awesome to me loved them still watch them once a year to this day. This newer one it looks eh.... ok sure fine ill try it, but I wish hollywood would just make new stuff. Studios taking older products and just janking them up has killed my remake vibe.
@yikesreviews
@yikesreviews 5 месяцев назад
Hollywood for the most part is risk averse. If they can mine the 80's and 90's they will do it. The Fall Guy and Roadhouse remakes are coming out this year. Studios are of the mind of hey if Dune can do it too. Can originality put butts in seats. I believe if the material (Story) is 1. marketed, 2. written, 3. directed and 4. portrayed well with confidence then yes people will show up. However the reality is one out of for of those aspects is not implemented or bypassed for some reason or another. Thank you for your comment and support @ryanlapeer4230.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Skarsgård! But, every generation should watch and "feel" the original Crow. Every movie does not need to be remade! I will NOT be watching it, even as much as I love Skarsgård. This feels like it is messing with the Lee legacy! Please, let it live on!........maybe just bring the original back instead!
@yikesreviews
@yikesreviews 5 месяцев назад
@boomsgrl I feel you. Hollywood has a way on shitting on past nostalgia. I don't think this film will destroy or harm the legacy Brandon built. He will always remain the definitive Eric Draven in the same way Heath Ledger will remain the definitive film version of the Joker. I'm partial to Mark Hamill as the greatest Joker. I would like to see a Crow film or series that is not using a past character from the comics. It would breathe new life into the franchise. For example Cal Kestis in Jedi Fallen Order is a great Star Wars example. Thank you for your great comment and support.

The Crow reboot - shitshow par excellence, totally ! Some freakshow MGK with a joke(r)-esque face, nothing more, nothing less. The gothic-esque, gritty, very dark mood & atmosphere, the soundtrack, everything - *nothing* for TF ever beats Brandon Lee's the Crow! LionsGate can burn a billion bucks, and still have a lame movie, which at some point would be 3/10 at IMDB at best. They thought, hey after 30 years - it's a new Generation, the kids would suck it up like shit! No way. This is some Temu/Ali(en)Express version of the Crow - nothing more, nothing less. Ever. This is for the ShitTok Generation - and they might like it in 1st place, *if* they don't know about the original, from 1994! It was a absolute awesome moment, after going out of the cinema seeing The Crow with Brandon Lee. (RIP).

It would not be hard but to make those changes but what do I know. They are making a conscious effort to not call back to the 90's aesthetic. It's hard to remake a cult classic. I felt the same way when they remade "The Thing" which was also a adaptation of a novella "Who Goes There? (1938)". But I only remember John Carpenter's "The Thing (1982)" not the 2011 Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. version. What I don't want Lionsgate to do to fix this, is to give Bill, the "Henry Cavill mustache treatment" that WB did. Either do it right or don't do it at all. Thanks for the great comment and support!
