SID VICIOUS London home and neighborhood walking tour.

Did you ever wonder where Sid Vicious lived after he joined the Sex Pistols? Me too. So I went there recently and walked his former neighborhood. I go to the Warrington Pub, where he and Nancy probably drank, and I visit the flat of his friend Steve Dior, whose band The Idols backed him in NYC. Finally I visit his former home at 3 Pindock Mews. You'll be surprised how beautiful his former home is today. Sadly, he only lived here about 1 1/2 years before moving to NYC, where he died a few months later.

When I lived in West London 10 years ago I'd often spend my Sunday afternoon walking to a location of a fave pop culture moment. The house where Hendrix died was across the street from me; Mick Jones and Jimmy Page would always walk past me in the street; I once went to the house from 'Performance' film; and also the house where they shot the interiors for 'Withnail & I's flat (even though it was set in Camden, the interiors were shot up West).

Stayed in Maida Vale in April. Just booked a return trip for NEXT April. I've always loved and visited Little Venice, but had never stayed there. Going by Marc Bolan's old flat and calling the Warwick Castle "my local" for a week was wonderful. I took Soo Catwoman and her daughter to the Warwick Castle back in 2008 when I worked with a rockabilly band who were playing the Brixton Academy. Brilliant video, it was really interesting to see where Sid used to live and hang out. The thing that surprises me when I see where a lot of these punks lived, is how affluent the areas are. But... London did not necessarily look that nice back in the mid to late 70s. Covent Garden for instance, where the Roxy was, did not look upmarket back then. I lived in London from 1993 to 1997, wish I had checked out maidavale and Notting hill, campden town etc more back them. I spent too long in south london, wimbledon etc. Now I am down under in Australia. Loving seeing London and the culture again. Keep the great videos coming 🎸👍

To be fair a lot of these West end places like Chelsea have been posh-ified since the '70s. A lot of the properties were council flats back then. @@WhyNotGoPlaces M', don't listen to the detractors; you so do look like an early Pistols fan! On the subject of the mews...I'm a knowledgable sort of guy & over the years have been inside many London mews buildings. When I originally saw the videos for Sid's versions of 'Something Else' and 'C'mon Everybody' (originally in the 'Swindle & both now on youtube) I could clearly see that they were shot inside a converted mews. In one of the videos you see Sid exiting the mews on a motorbike & naturally I'd thought they were shot at Pindock Mews. On seeing your video, however, I'm not so sure. Whist the front doors look sort of right, the right hand side of the mews, when he's on the bike, have a fence-line rather than houses & one wonders where these mews are. I was thinking they might be St Lukes Mews in Notting Hill (long-owned by music industry people & where Paula Yates was tragically found dead) but no, St Lukes Mews also look wrong. Anyway....just another mystery that someone can solve.

Hi Mimi! Thanks for watching again. Yes, when I met him and Nancy at his solo gig (Aug. 15, 1978 in London), he told me they were leaving soon for NYC. That's when she said to me "London is shit compared to New York". So my guess is that she was the one who really wanted to move there. His first gig in NYC was Sept. 7th 1978, so I think they were gone from this location by the end of August.

Another great post! Thanks. Keep them coming. I'll have to visit the Warrington on my day off next week. In another post you mentioned encountering Sid drowning his sorrows after a gig at the 100 Club (I think). You saw a side of Sid then that few people would have seen publicly. The story about Sid robbing the dead bloke of his money and watch is darkly amusing and probably closer to his public image than the vulnerable Sid you met that time. And ... Old Speckled Hen is one of my favourites too!😊

That is a fantastic pub. I wish I lived nearby! I talked to Sid and Nancy after his solo gig at the Electric Ballroom in Camden - August 15, 1978. He seemed kind of down and surprised when I said he did a great gig. But he seemed sweet too. That's when they told me they were moving to New York. She said London was "shit" compared to NYC. I had no idea he lived in such a nice place at the time. Thanks for watching!

@@WhyNotGoPlaces Of course, Electric Ballroom, my mistake. I wish I had your chutzpah. I live in Chiswick, west London, and one afternoon a few years back (around 2009) I encountered Amy Winehouse. I was in a Starbucks on the High Road when a black people-carrier pulled up outside and who should emerge from it but Amy. At first I thought 'That lass has got the whole Amy Winehouse thing going on', then I realised it actually was her. A mutter went round the cafe as she stood quietly waiting for her coffee (by herself). She was 2 feet away from me but she was giving off such an 'I'm really not in the mood' kind of vibe I didn't acknowledge her. Our eyes met but I couldn't summon up the courage to speak! 😄 (Also, the Pistols recorded some demos and rehersed somewhere here in Chiswick, but I've never been able to ascertain where. There's a photo of them, very early days, looking over a wall. When I see it in books all the caption ever says is 'Sex Pistols in Chiswick.')

Thanks so much, I love your vids - great to get a regular Pistols fix and more. The Warrington is gorgeous, hope I manage to visit before too long - I thought it looked familiar, though, and sure enough, it features in episodes of my favourite TV shows, namely Minder and The Sweeney. It appears in the episode 'Night Out' of the latter, one of the best, I feel. Pindock Mews likewise is familiar from maybe hundreds of Brit TV shows and films. I'm sure it was a desirable address going way back. Stirling Moss may have had a place there? I'm sure an F1 fan will correct me. Thanks once again, it's a gas to hang out, virtually at least - AND you was in Kommunity FK? Pretty neat! Ta!

It was used in my favourite 70s cop show The Sweeney too, they often filmed around Maida Vale but usually in Hammersmith/Notting Hill/Holland Park,I used to watch them filming it in the streets sometimes, and all the interior "cop shop" scenes were filmed in the derelict Colet Court school building on Hammersmith Road where I played football every Saturday morning,so I used to see them there too.I used to collect all the empty film spool cannisters they threw away in a skip there, they were just like the PiL Metal Box ones.

The pindock mews wasn't always "very nice" it was a rough tired & fairly cheap area in 77 era, nothing like it is nowerdays. The 70s was a very different era. I played drums in a band with Steve Dior & we were/are pal's, he used to live in the Clearlake hotel in kensington when i hung out with him (after his time in N.Y & touring in the 80s) he has the basement flat, his folks hotel since the 60s, when they passed away he & sister Ester (jerry Nolan's girlfriend) sold up for several million £'sss & went their own ways, Steve now lives in mexico, I've not seen him for some time & miss him when I visit London, he recently married & seems very happy these days.
