I’m 72 the punk scene here never took off till 78/79 .. but I remember seeing the Pistols in 76 on TV on the Thames singing God Save The Queen, I hated the disco garbage. I got a Mohawk hair cut, I mostly had no shirt leather pants & studded belt, tattoos, I guess I looked a bit rough, but punk was all about attitude, I never picked a fight. But it was a very self destructive time in my life, if I knew I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself😂 Enjoyed your video, I’m like you I wonder what happened to people, just watched a video on the Slits Johns stepdaughter, who sadly died of cancer.

Interesting. Although I remember him saying onstage "this one's dedicated to my honey, Nancy." I think she came out just before he did "I wanna Be Your Dog." I remember when John lived in the Gunter Grove house in c.1978-1982 I used to pass it quite often back then and it was very run down and all the exterior painted parts were a really dull dirty dark red colour and all the paint was peeling off,and as you noted it didn`t have any kind of railings or safety rail around the flat roof area where we saw pictures of him him and PiL hanging out and boozing it up,he`s lucky nobody ever went over the edge!
@WhyNotGoPlaces

How interesting that you were walking down that street back then. Outside, it doesn't look that nice now, to be honest. Some of the houses on the street look a little run down, even though it's very expensive. It's a very busy street. Yes, no railings back then at all! In one photo, Lydon has one leg over the edge.

Crazy London house prices,the one you showed at 48 Cheyne Walk which Jagger bought in 1967 for £50,000 would be more like £20 Million now! The one next door,number 47 sold way back in 2011 for £11.5m!
@WhyNotGoPlaces
@WhyNotGoPlaces День назад
I know! I wonder if he regrets selling it. This was my favorite of the Stones houses. It's such a sweet house, not too big, and it's tucked away on a quiet part of Cheyne Walk, in front of a park so it doesn't get the noise from the Embankment. Just lovely.

I am a little late to this party however loving your channel. In the early 70's my uncle would go to a club called Friars in Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire and tell me about David Bowie. He also did his first show as Ziggy before letting Ziggy and the Spiders from Mars loose on the world. There is a bronze sculpture of David Bowie in Aylesbury's market square. I also remember watching on TV the news reporter saying that David had done his last show as Ziggy I cried and cried, my mum was horrified that I was so upset by this pop star announcing no more Ziggy Stardust. oohh to be 13 again lol. Love Punk, Pistols and really enjoying your channel.

Another great video!..I noticed you referenced my comment from an earlier video about Johhny Rotten/Lydon still having a property in London,I won`t say exactly where it is but it is a three-storey terraced house in a quiet street running just off of Fulham Palace Road very near the Fulham Football Club stadium and my own house in Stevenage Road which is why I see him around the area occasionally because he stays in his house when he`s touring England.And when here on other music business matters too I expect.😁

Oh yes, that was you! Thanks for that info. It's so interesting how he has stayed in the same area all of these years, that's why I mentioned it in the video. I once stayed with friends in a flat on a busy street in Fulham, I can't remember the name, but I thought the entire area was so charming. I remember walking up and down the high street. *The Pistols albums here are all pretty good. It's the Pistols, after all. I bought a few 'bootleg' albums of them that sounded absolutely horrendous (recording-wise), because I was after a version of the 'heavy' song on the movie 'Rock n Roll Swindle' (this was before I had 'Bollocks'). Never found it, though (it was 'Bodies'). It's hard to go wrong with the Pistols and towards the end, with songs like 'Bodies' and 'Belsen', they were really getting into excellently dark, sarcastic territory. A shame they split ... but not really*
@sexobscura
@sexobscura 3 дня назад
*Rotten + Vicious both joined Sex Pistols, so it doesn't matter which John was chosen. Lydon was by far the superior lyricist and persona, though. He definitely started the whole 'punk' thing with his attitude alone. McLaren deserves credit for being the snake oil salesman that he always was, too - and NO, he didn't create OR manage the band AT ALL*

Come across your channel through this video. I've looked at your other titles and they are my sort of films. I've subscribed and I'm going to have fun working my way through them. My own London punk story was connected to Step Forward records in Dryden Chambers on Oxford Street. The Sex Pistols had their office upstairs. Worked for a brief time with Kim Turner, who would go on to road manage The Police and then co-manage Sting. Great and very talented geezer. Worked a Chelsea/ATV tour in '77. That was hilarious.

Thanks for watching and subscribing! I really appreciate it. Since you worked at Dryden Chambers, I would recommend watching my "I followed the Sex Pistols on tour" video because I mention in it going to Malcolm's office to deliver a jacket to Steve Jones from their Los Angeles rep. This was Aug. 1977. I met his secretary Sophie Richmond. How cool that you worked in the same building at Step Forward! And on the Chelsea/ATV tour! I'm going to do another Malcolm video soon. I remember going up some narrow stairs to Glitterbest, Do you remember what floor Malcolm was on? I think it was the 2nd or 3rd (with the first floor being ground level), but I can't recall for sure. Do you remember people coming and going from Glitterbest? The band maybe? What a great time to be working there! Thanks again. Maggie

@@WhyNotGoPlaces The Pistols office was above Step Forward which was on the 2nd floor so I would say they were on the 3rd floor. Of course there were several labels working from Dryden all under Miles Copeland. Sham 69 were one band, before they signed to Polydor, Jimmy Pursey was always there and the Sniffin' Glue peopel were there. I'm not sure who was the fastest talker, Pursey or Danny Baker. I did speak to Sophie once on the phone but that was later on when I tried to book the Pistols for a gig up north when the narrative Malcolm was putting out was they were banned from playing in the UK.

@@WhyNotGoPlaces My mind started to go back to those days after commenting on your video. I think it must have been in the first part of '77 when I contacted the Pistols office, before GSTQ came out, as I remember the SPOTS dates later in the year. I think the Chelsea / ATV tour was August-time. One of the funniest things ever was watching Mark Perry trying to stride down the mean streets of Glasgow wearing his bondage pants. ATV were so good then, way better than Chelsea. Did you ever hear their "The Image Has Cracked" album? I remember The SPOTS playing at Lafayettes in Wolverhampton at that time I wonder if that was the gig you missed? No I left my offer with Sophie. She said she would let Malcolm know but I never heard back. I don't think he wanted them playing in the UK at that time. It fitted in better with the story he was spinning. I have watched your US Tour video and enjoyed your remembrances. Brilliant memories to have . . . and photos too. I remember chatting with Debbie Juvenile at a gig one time, she was stunning and was the main attraction in the room. I shall have to watch your Bromley Contingent film next! As I said before I enjoyed your houses film. When we were 17/18 and messing about with being in bands etc. the flat at Edith Grove held real iconic status and we dreamed of living together as a band like Mick, Keith & Brian. I have made a short video of my own about when I met Keith at Redlands. It's called "Meeting Keith Richards" on my channel "Dodger's Trips" if that interests you. Sorry for going on some, it's not often I get to talk about those times.

That was the 2nd night when The Damned headlined. In Viv Albertine's book, she talks about it. She was very close to Sid. She said that at first Sid said he didn't throw it, and then he admitted to her later that it was in fact him. All this is in her autobiography "clothes, music, boys." It's a great book on the early scene. Yes, I love the Prisoner. One day I'll make it to Port Meirion. I did visit the flat in the beginning scene where he drives up in his yellow sports car. *Of course, Rotten knew he had protection when he was being snarky and offensive. He's always had a group to protect his scrawny little behind. I think he's a sharp, funny, intelligent guy, but he's as flawed us any of us. He's either a masochist or foolish, but he's always been a provocateur by telling the truth all the same. After reading his autobiographies and hearing his contradictory statements over the years, well, I take what he says with a fair, few grains of salt. I'll always respect the things he says, though. He certainly plays up to his 'rotten' persona, too. He's vividly aware of his position as an 'elder statesman', that's for sure. I'd put money on him being really egotistical, too. He's gone through so many musicians with PiL that it should be a crime. Once the original lineup left, PiL weren't the same anymore, and I stopped listening to the 'Johnny Rotten Show'. Some songs were great, but overall, they were very listless. He'll forever be known as a Sex Pistol, regardless of his admonitions to the contrary, and he no doubt secretly loves it (though he'd never admit it). He's definitely been engrained with the 'class system' of Britain, as he's forever letting us know that he's 'working class' and 'made it out'. Hurrah for him. The rest of the world neither understands such a statement nor its value, but it's on onerous achievement for him, nonetheless. Then there's the meningitis he suffered, when he lost all his memory. Ho hum. Every single interview we need to hear his (quite frankly) sanctimonious bleating for sympathy (though he'd never admit that, either), when it's completely his own private information. We all have our hardships in life, but he's had a spectacularly 'easy' ride of it. Then there's the shouting anybody down who sees differently from him, much like a tantrum-throwing child, letting us all know his/the truth. He's more often than not correct, it's just his immature way of getting it across that 's very annoying and uncomfortable. More often than not, he's had too much to drink, and sounds as embarrassing as an old drunk trying to chat up a young woman in front of her husband. More power to him for his bravery, he's obviously never been 'put in his place (due to his protectors/yes-men mentioned earlier)* *John Lydon is a speaker of truth and a brave, reckless one, at that. Sometimes that's necessary to cut through all the bull. He gives good copy and is thoroughly entertaining. His charisma spurned a 'movement' and assured his life in the 'performing arts'. He'll be a touchstone for people well after he's left this mortal coil, as he's left an indelible mark on our very confused and repetitive culture*

The track, keep banging the door, by PIL. Is about this flat. He was pissed that the public had found out where he lived, and a steady stream of punks and looney's would show up at all hours, banging on his door. It was this reason, and the constant attention of the Metropolitan police drug squad, that forced him to sell up and move to America.

Thanks for the info! Yes, that must have been annoying that everyone knew where he lived, including the police.

Very nice video; indeed mùsic history! It"s nice to see how they lived. I prefer also the 1978 version of Lydon's house. You can find here a pile of cans under my table haha. That couch would have many stories to tell I guess! I adore that terrace on top of that building! The air is so much better up there. I recognized the building of the Rolling Stones, these greek pillars. Funny that you said that there was a big change in their bank accounts from 1963 to 1967. They had their hit Satisfaction in 1964, which was big in the USA, but not in England, because of it"q lyrics. English radiostations at first refused to play that song. Nice to see where Bowie lived. I collect his records. For me it's Bowie who is the artist of the 20th century, not Elvis! Bowie was a globetrotter: I am a landtrotter, I lived already in many places in Belgium; Aalst, Bruges, Antwerp, Gent. Looking forward for a new video! I wish you and your friend a nice weekend! Greetings Jason

Jah Wobble threatened Sid and Nancy with an axe at Gunter Grove. Lydon had lots of interesting visitors including reggae musicians, composer John Barry and Les McKeown of Bay City Rollers.

Appparently Polly used to freak John out talking about supernatural stuff she was either into or had experienced and it scared John so much he wanted to avoid her even though he always spoke highly of her music and her band, infact X-Ray Specs and The Slits are the only bands he ever really championed so was surprised to hear that story about locking her in a closet.
@WhyNotGoPlaces

That story was in her documentary. My guess is that Sid probably did it, but who knows. Apparently she had some mental health issues because it also said that later she was in a mental institution for awhile. Later in life she lived in the Hastings area and was friends with Viv Albertine. I always liked her music as well. Thanks for watching!

Syd Barrett lived in Chelsea Cloisters for several years after leaving Pink Floyd. I think Sid and Nancy also stayed there a few nights. Apparently Sid and Lydon tried to meet him there but he wasn't interested.
