For this test I grabbed a bag full Panasonic cameras and headed out to take some 4k video.
The test includes the compact TZ80 (SZ60), two bridge cameras the Fz82 (Fz80) and the Fz2000 (Fz2500), and two micro for thirds cameras the G7 and the G9. Lens used were the Panasonic 14-140, Leica 12-60 and 100-400.
As it wasn’t going to be practical to set up the cameras side-by-side, my biggest challenge was the changing lighting conditions. All of the cameras were set to standard picture profile and auto-white-balance. No ND filters were used.
In the test I have compared how the cameras look at their maximum and minimum focal lengths and then how they looked if I adjusted the zoom so they show a similar crop of the subject. I also recorded one test indoors, so I could replicates the same shooting conditions by using studio lights.
The G7 and G9 have different crop factors, so this was allowed for. Unlike the G7 which has a crop factor of 2.42 the G9 uses the whole of the sensor and down samples it, so it only has a crop factor of 2.17. However, the built in (EX) tele convertor in the G9 uses a smaller area of the sensor increasing the effective focal length of the lens by a factor of 2.94. So, a 400mm lens on the G7 gives you the equivalent focal length of 968mm. On the G9 it would be 871mm or 1177mm using the tele convertor option.
You will see that the results were very similar. All of these cameras performed well, especially at the longer focal lengths. In the wide angle test, the Tz80 and the Fz82 both struggled with the poor light conditions and they were unable to record the detailed brickwork of the church and the grass in the foreground. In the indoor test both of these cameras introduced some noise at ISO 200. The lens on the Fz82 was noticeably sharper than the TZ80 at all focal lengths.
The Fz2000 appeared less saturated and with less contrast than the others, it also seemed over sharpened - although this could be fixed by adjusting the colour profile slightly. With the G7 I noticed a tendency for it to look warmer than the other cameras, so I tried another G7 and there was a clear difference between them, which can be seen in the wide angle test.
The G9 was more detailed than the G7, but using G9 in tele mode it was much closer. There was actually more difference in the lens than there was with the cameras. The indoor test shows the lack of sharpness in the corners of the Leica 12-60 at 50mm, especially when fully open. The Lumix 14-140 was a lot more consistent and was sharp across the whole image.
Although there were subtle colour differences between the cameras, none of there were far off. The indoor studio test shows just how close they were.
Audio was recorded with the built in mics, this highlighted some issues with cameras like the Fz2000 which appear to have a background hum. Plugging in a mic should resolve this. Some shots were taken from a hide, others from my kitchen, so you may hear talking or a fridge in the background!
I hope this video will be of interest to anyone thinking of upgrading or getting one of these cameras.

Thank you very much for your effort! Great comparison. I also own 3 of those cameras :G7 (which was my first Lumix) G9 and FZ80. There is a huge difference in picture quality when it comes to stills between the FZ80 and G7/G9. So I rarely use FZ80 for anything but videos in very, very good light. G7 and G9 are closer but G9 has a better sensor (almost one stop better) and excellent IBIS. Strangely, and contrary to other reports, I much prefer G7's ergonomics and its built-in flash comes in handy in many occasions. My perception is also that G7 has a warmer tone. I wanted G9 to replace my Canon 7D MKII for stills, and it's worked very well for macro and non moving subjects. Its sensor albeit being smaller than Canon's has better dynamic range and color reproduction, and IBIS is a game changer of course. However although G9 body is larger than G7, weather sealed and dust resistant, it is no where near as rugged as the 7D MKII and this becomes an issue when shooting wildlife outdoors, as it is a very expensive camera and I want to avoid any damage. Picture quality of flying birds and wild animals is similar between G9 and 7D MKII, Canon being faster and with a more reliable autofocus. G9 kills Canon in very other feature, particularly editing functions and video (4K)

Really can't tell much difference between each... some people will be able to, but the average joe blow wouldn't... all cameras have great 4K footage... my camera is the TZ80, and I was quite surprised at how it stacks up against the other big name cameras

These tests are awesome thank you! You have these cameras dialled in your nature videos are so nice, crisp footage always! I’ve shot a great deal of my work on the G7, GH4 and G80 and the functionality of Panasonic cameras alone are a huge selling point, but the pricing really sets them apart. I see there’s little need for you to shoot in 1080p for your line of work but given the time you have spent with these cameras can you comment on the quality of the videos from the FZ80 compared to the FZ2000? I need a camera with slow motion and I don’t know if the FZ80 will cut it at 60fps with its low bitrate of 28mbps compared to the FZ2000 with 120fps and high bitrate of 100mbps. FZ2000 obviously a clear winner however nearly 3 times the price of the FZ80! Hope you can offer your advice, the camera will be needed for filming surfers, mostly at the beach at a minimum of 400mm zoom range. Cheers, Joel.

Very interesting as a G9 and 100-400mm Leica zoom owner I observed this - At 4:37 the FZ 2000 (my former camera) shows better detail in the centre 'apple'. At 4:57 the G9+100-400mm shows more detail in the moss(?) on the branch from which hangs the centre apple. Maybe a slight difference in focus there? And what is the "built in (EX) tele convertor in the G9"? Altogether the G9 just edges out the FZ2000 for sharpness? The electronic zoom on the FZ2000/2500 is very useful. Great videos of the dragonfly at the end! Did it fly off before you could get it on the G9 + 100-400mm? I also have the 14-140mm lens and use it all the time - very versatile. From a Norfolk guy in Perth, WA.

Thanks for your comments, and your observations. Yes, the dragonfly flew off when someone walked by, that ended the test! I did notice some inconsistencies in the results, some shots where the G7 looked sharper. I did try and carefully select the same point of focus, but I suspect that on a moving subject like the duck that it may have slightly been different each time. Also the cameras with the smaller sensor will have more depth of field. I was impressed by the Fz2000, I did some separate tests of an image chart, not included in this video, and it was sharp across the whole image. The Fz82 was also very good, the biggest shook was the Leica 12-60, at the longer focal lengths it was really poor and only improved once stopped down to f16. I had no issues with the 14-140, it was sharp wide open. Both the G7 and the G9 have the option to use the built Ex. Tele Convertor. On the G7 it only works in 1080 but on the G9 it also works in 4k. It basically crops the sensor by 1.4. So it should give a similar image to the G7. It effectively increases the focal length of the lens, at the expensive of some detail, but that maybe worth the trade-off.Hopefully the main thing the video shows is how close they are, especially given the cost difference. I know there are sharper cameras on the market, but I like that I pick up any of these Panasonic cameras and use them to take the shots I want because they all have the same features and controls. Keep watching, I will try and publish some of the G9 footage soon.

Why does G9 have so much red (?) tint ? What is more accurate to reality, it or G7 (Well, if you compare it with your eyes) ?
