The dongle is so small I'd just keep it in my repair kit for a road side fix if I needed it. That way I have the side stand sensor in place in case I ever make a mistake.

It happened to a friend of mine on his 2019 690. After a muddy ride we rode into town to a pie shop and after our lunch bike would stop when putting in first gear. So we cleaned the side stand and cable tied the thick foil pie container to the side stand to create the connection needed. This worked and it’s still on my mates bike 6 months later. So I now carry a foil pie container in my tool kit. But I think the by pass dongle is a great idea for the longer term. Cheers

Thanks for sharing, that’s a great trailside fix, especially if it holds up after six months! If you still want a sidestand sensor, you can just put the dongle in your toolbox, it’s that small. Two other viewers commented that they did that so they had the SS as long as possible. Have a great day my friend 🙂

Love your videos and bike. I have a 2017 701 and just rode 7,000 miles on the TAT from New York to Oregon and then 4,000 miles back on the highway. I ride pretty hard and luckily I have never broke my switch yet.. but I do carry the same dongle you have in my toolbox.. for me I like the extra safety of having the switch but but also knowing that I have a backup if it breaks. And it doesn’t take up any room in my tool kit. I’m 42 and did forget a few times on my tat trip to put the stand up before pulling away. So for me I’m glad I had the switch and didn’t bypass it until I need to. But great videos and look forward to riding season again.

Hello Gregory, thanks a lot for sharing your experience! That sounds like a great trip, wow! A clever approach, the dongle is so small so could have just chucked it in my toolbox myself. Thank you for the kind words and thanks a lot for following along 🙂

I been riding my 690 pretty hard too, like most of the ktm and husky owners, I been practicing some jumps lately, and have done some of the Rocky trails in Colorado, and fortunately I haven't had a single problem with it, but having that dongle with the tools it's a great idea, thanks for sharing, I know my memory also likes to take breaks here and there

Good Tip and a good explaine for the need of a SS-Dongle. For commute/daily ride let the original mounted and take the Dongle in your Toolbox (on the 701). So you have the safety in normal use. When shtf you have the right Thing on Board. Best Regards, Alfred (my Cable is always bridged :-) )

That’s a very good approach Alfred, you’ll have the safety switch for daily riding and the donle nearby if anything happens when you’re put and about 🙂

Great stuff as always Johannes. Once I’ve Loctited a new bike, deleting the side stand switch (and on race bikes, the side stand!) is literally the next thing I do. I have always managed to do it with some head scratching, a soldering iron and some heat shrink. After that, I delete the clutch cutout switch. All of these little switches and ‘safety’ measures will eventually fail and leave a rider stranded.I set out to make the bike as analog, vibration resistant, waterproof and dusty proof as I can. And I always have a spare chain joining link clipped onto one of my cables because I know I’ll need it. That, and cable ties!
@JohannesDalen
@JohannesDalen 2 года назад
Thank you Kym 🙂 The clutch cutout switch was deleted on my DRZ when I got it, but I haven’t checked if my 701 has one - I assume it does as I’m sure it’s mandatory for new bikes. I can definitely understand why you want to dustproof your bike down in Australia! 😂

@@JohannesDalen does the 701 have a tip over sensor? Lots of bikes have these nowadays too and they are one more thing to go wrong. They are good in theory - to save the running engine lying sideways and starving for oil when you fall off - but they are a pain in the arse when they fail. I doubt the 701 has one, but worth being sure.
@JohannesDalen
@JohannesDalen 2 года назад
@@kymcopyriot9776 Thanks for the heads up, I’ve never heard about one when I’ve read about the 701. I’ll look it up and see what I can find 🙂 On one side all these electronical gizmos are things that can go wrong, but when they are working they really do work. The TC on this bike in offroad mode is a work of art!

For those who need this and didn’t buy the dongle yet, just glue the magnet to the sensor and hide it up somewhere next to the ecu. This I think will actually be a safer* solution than the dongle cause if you drop the bike on a rut or a stick or smth and it hits the semi-exposed dongle just right, it can break of, while the oem sensor would be hidden somewhere close to the ecu. Another popular mod is the cluch lever switch delete. That can also leave you stranded quite easily :D
@JohannesDalen
@JohannesDalen 2 года назад
That’s a good tip Cristi, thanks for sharing, I didn’t think of that. Personally, for 29$ I’d rather have the dongle, cleans up wires and the dongle is pretty well protected 🙂

Thanks for the video, didn't know about this and am planning on geting a 701. I think I might just buy the bypass dongle and keep it with my tools and fuses, that way I get the best of both! Safety feature works as intended, but if it ever got broken, I could just use the dongle to fix the problem trail side :).

Well, my comment was filtered out again, I guess RU-vid algorithm really hates me 😁 Although I have never been stopped in the middle of the trail with side stand sensor failure, I have also installed a dongle to avoid this problem with 701 in the future. I have used the factory dongle. Works as expected 👍

I was able to eliminate the side stand switch on my R1200 GSA by removing the cable but I also had to (it’s been a long time so I forgot) turning off something in the ECU. I also have witnessed other people have this side stand failure on the side of the road and I never wanted it to happen to me, so it had to go. I will also say that there have been a few times that I have forgotten to put the side stand up before I rolled away. Fortunately (so far) I’ve always able to catch it in time before anything serious happened. Having said that, I can’t see myself going back to the switch.

My 701 has the check engine light on right now and it’ll start up in neutral, but as soon as I click it into first it thinks the kick stand is still down even when it’s up. I see I have 2 bolts missing so clearly stuff isn’t lining up right now. Curious if that tripped the bike up and now it’s creating a check engine light error. Will update soon

Keep Throwing Money, like you said most kill switches are an easy fix, then some you have to spend money to fix. 😂😂😂 When it became law to make it impossible to ride off with the side stand down they also had self retracting side stands, so when the weight was taken off the bike the stand would automatically flip back up. There was 2 issues with this system, one was you had to keep pressure on the stand with your foot until the stand was on the ground with the weight of the bike on it, otherwise it would keep on springing back, number 2 was you had to dismount to do this. My 2001 Gas Gas 400 was a right pain because the stand sat so high in the up position, it ran parallel with the sub frame upper tube, almost straight up, so the only way to get it down was to use your hand to push it down into position and when you took the weight off the stand it would flick up so fast, I had to reposition the of the return spring so at least it would stay down. There was stories of Some BMW boxer twins that they fitted this system with that when on the stand and the engine was running that if you blipped the throttle the fly wheel mass was enough to move the bike enough that the stand would flip up and then the bike fall over. I found the switch handy on my DR when parking on a hill, leave the bike in gear and flick the stand down to kill the engine, just remember it is in gear before trying to start it otherwise you go shooting down the hill when you push the start button. The biggest problem with the cut out switches on off road bikes is that when on rough ground the side stand would bounce and the engine would cut out, even on the road when hitting a speed bump at speed the engine would cut out. They are a good idea for safety but also a bad thing for safety, especially when the bike is older and things wear out, the function of the switch becomes a little unpredictable, like many safety features, great when new but a liability when older.
@JohannesDalen
@JohannesDalen 2 года назад
Good day sir, hope all is well! The Husky dirt bikes on the dealer floor I’ve sat on lately has a self returning side stand. It sirs very high and kicks up with a high force. I guess that’s the safety instead of having a sidestand sensor? I’m sure the safety laws will increase in numbers in coming years too. Safety and emission laws getting tighter and tighter each year.

Yesterday I test rode a 2016 model year bike. While warming up the engine, I just wanted to see how well it would go from neutral, to first & back into neutral. The bike died as soon as I clicked the lever down into first gear. I had never even heard of a side stand safety switch. The first thing I thought was, if I buy this bike, that switch is going bye bye. One less thing to get me stranded a hundred miles from anywhere.

Comment translated with Google: You are all so eager to put on resistors instead of the original, and it never occurred to you that if he fails in such Mongolia, he will not be able to handle it in his life ... I immediately measured the resistance and made duplicates in an electronics store . Just in case. Answer: Yes, the dongle can stop working in the middle of Mongolia as well, you are absolutely correct - but the sidestand switch is half a meter lower on the bike exposed to so much more. The dongle is tucked in behind other wires and will not get broken in a tip over. Thanks for commenting 🙂

I have a problem with my 701lr, that I suspect may be from the (broken) side stand switch's wiring. I ordered my bike with a alu "bottom plate", and when I lifted the bike with the foot operated raisable lift, the side stand wasn't down. Which I wanted when I was about to lower the bike, so I forced it down although it was a bit tight due to the raising platform. I now suspect that the wiring is broken, cause the engine shut down when I put in in gear. So I bought a bypass dongle, and was OK for a while. Then a few weird things happened; the engine failure light lit, along with the ABS light and the TC light. The quickshifter stopped working when trying to change gear upwards. Also my trip counter and my aftermarket gear indicator stopped working. My code reader said that "vehicle speed sensor" and "intake air temperature sensor" had faults. After changing to a lithium ion battery (Antigravity batteries) and resetting the fault codes, I drove about 20 km and the same errors reappeared. I suspect there might be a shortage of the wire for the sidestand to the frame, but I'm not sure. Any ideas? baardreil@duck.com
