Side Necked Turtles and or Snake Necked Turtles are very odd looking, with their super long necks. I was actually kind of surprised by how long they are. I've seen snapping turtles with long necks, but not that long.

Where I am south west of Sydney, NSW, the waterways and ponds are all full of Eastern long-necks.

I wonder if side neck turtles were once normal and evolved to have longer necks or if they split off from early ancestors before the neck retractable ability was finalized. if it's the former I wonder what evolutionary pressure would benefit a longer neck over a complete defense. perhaps the prey got too tricky to catch and needed faster grab speed?

If you're interested, there was an ancient Genus of side-neck turtles called Stupendemys. They were gigantic turtles with fairly long necks.

Awwww! I love turtles, of course! We have some at work in the pond out back. If you stand at the railing, they all gather around and beg for food. I don't stand there bc I feel like that's teasing. Long story short, I wish long necked turtles lived there too. They are pretty cool!

Ah yes I love watching the turtles at the local ponds! It's too bad people feed them, but they're lovely to see!
