There was contamination of the rail head hence why they decided to do this, it is not a regular thing, it was done as a temporary solution to a problem that was still being investigated. It was believed an grease pot was faulty potentially. For those asking, Siemens trains can run on the Burley and Clifton Hill groups just not with passengers as the stations on curves fitted with monitors are not aligned for Siemens trains. Also due to the number of X'Traps easily covering the runs required on those groups, it does not make sense to have to train and maintain drivers qualifications in two different types of train when it can just be the one. There is also an issue with Siemens trains passing each other in the West Richmond Tunnels. This train was driven by a Principal Driver, a senior driver qualified in all lines and all types of trains.

Siemens trains are not allowed at all on the Camberwell/Ringwood lines due to platform strikes as East Camberwell. Also not permitted on Hurstbridge line at all either

That perfectly captures how bad the X-trapolis trains are when it comes to traction, they need a siemens to sand the rails for them! Great video mate!

I’m just curious, why can’t Siemens trains run on the Mernda, hurstbridge, lilydale, Belgrave, Alamein, glen waverley lines? I’m genuinely curious.

Those lines were operated by connex originally as part of the split which sees the platforms too narrow for Siemens clearance. Since yknow, connex ordered the xtraps and not the nexas

The reason is they just don’t want to

@@Un_Altra_Persona interesting. You’d think in today’s world they’d change it and make sure all types of suburban trains run on all lines?

The X'Traps aren't great when it comes to traction, they should just have their own sanders fitted!

Would have been great to catch a Siemens train on the Mernda line. Something you don't see everyday

(This will almost never happen but) Surely when MM2 opens we get regular siemens service running from Werribee to Mernda via Fishermans Bend

having read the comments, these new trains have a serious deficiency. all driving axles need sanders. derrr! its a fundamental. at a local pedestrian crossing next to the nearby station here in perth, i noticed 'exfoliation', which is a name for what happens to the rail surface when the train driving wheels apply a pulling pressure to the track which happens as the train accelerates. the 'plasticity' of the steel rail stresses the very top of the rail and eventually it causes a very thin layer to separate from the rail leaving a rust- filled shallow hole. perth suburban tracks, unlike melbourne's, are very well maintained. no mudholes, no whoopdies and regular visits of the grinding train. yet still this happens. the pressure of acceleration needs to be spread over all the wheels. no lazy axles. they could always ask the train drivers to be gentle and accelerate slowly which would require rewriting of timetables. no thanks. no cheaping out. oh, and another thing, i believe there are penalties to be paid by the service provider for late trains. the service provider in melbourne just makes the trains travel very slowly. wrong attitude. patronage is better if the trains are fast. the b class perth trains do 110k's. the new ones will run at 130k's. cop that melbourne!

Why are Siemens trains not permitted to operate on the Mernda line?
@georgetb9083
@georgetb9083 2 месяца назад
because of the split, so trains ordered for the bayside lines will (almost never) run a service on the hillside group, watch taitsets video on the divison of the rollingstock and why they get different trains

This makes very little sense, the sand is immediately displaced from the rail head by the Siemens! The DOT needs to just fit sanding equipment to the X Traps, they certainly need it.

i agree, it's odd maybe the sand sticks well to the rails but like, from what i understand about sanding this won't even be that helpful, like, sand is applied as close as possible to the driving wheels to aid that traction. getting another train to apply it in advance is not quite what that means right?

@@vsvnrg3263They need to make these runs more common, which is also uneconomical, they need to fit sanders to Xtraps as a permanent fix.

@@levonandonian7613 , yes, one siemens before every xtrap. there must be an easier way. like fitting sanders, lol.
