In this video I demonstrate how I use the Guerrilla Painter Pochade ThumBox 6x8 with water mixable oils. Painting backlit trees proved to be a challenge, especially because I was in the shade and it was freezing that day! But it was still enjoyable and I look forward to more painting trips to this forest.
At the time of filming, I was still new to oil painting outside, and boy is it a struggle, especially in winter!
Materials:
Guerrilla Painter Pochade ThumBox 6x8
6x8 Guerrilla Cartón Plein Air Panel
Winsor & Newton Water Mixable Oil Colours
Liquin Impasto medium
I also wrote a blog post about plein air painting in Scotland, if you're interested: www.sarahburnss...

The painted highlights and the actual sun rays shining on your painting were playing tricks on my eyes. This is a beautiful painting.

💗💗💗 I think you did wonderfully, Sarah, on this. I don't like being cold... I have to blow my nose constantly... yada yada... plus I'm a bit too old to be out there in 30 something degrees. Anyway, funny how oil painters (some) want to have their paints dry faster, and some Acrylic painters want to slow the drying time down. I'm fine with acrylics the way they are. I just use a minimum of additives to it. Would love to see more acrylics if you have them. Love from USA!

Hi.....I have same box...I have had it for several years and I have found it works best with canvas boards...6x8 canvas boards are easy to find and they are not expensive at all...they are thick enough and heavy enough that they sit still for you when painting....just a suggestion.

Just bought this thumb box in a kit set online. It is so fun to watch your cool forest from Florida. Very nice picture. Loved Scotland when we visited. Enjoy, stay safe. Jeanne

It’s a convenient little box! Nowadays I primarily use it for gouache on short hikes.

@@cametientaucoeur One that I don't own...lol. No seriously, I'm saving up for a STRADA box.

seems like a problem with the box is that it doesn't hold the top of the work steady. you have your left hand occupied the whole time. love watching you paint. i hope to try oils this way soon.

My main problem is that the canvas/panel is recessed into the lid while painting, so it's very difficult to get the brush or palette knife to the edges. It's designed that way so you can carry wet panels but it's super annoying while painting.

I have an old studio box, the typical rectangular box that a lot painters used to use, with the s sectioned areas on the bottom. Mine is old, very well made, from the 1970s. I’d like to get one of these Pochade boxes, though. You use a few different ones. Do you have a recommendation for one that would work for both WC and oils? And with that wood palette in this one, how does it clean up?
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 4 года назад
Depends on how much mixing space you need, and how lightweight you want it to be. My Sienna Pochade box (in another of my videos) is great for everything, but a bit heavy so I would never take it hiking. I only use it when I’m car-camping or driving to a location and staying near my car. My guerrilla box (as you see in this video) is very light and fits in my backpack, but the wooden palette that comes with it is already ruined from dried oil paint, so I have to tape a piece of palette paper there to use it. Not a huge deal. This means again, I can use any medium. But it’s a very small mixing space! Ultimately, I’m looking into getting a STRADA with the glass palette and expandable side trays because it would be the best of both worlds.

Try soaking that bottle lid in some warm water & vinegar, then you can scrub the sticker off :)

what is the hole in the back of the box for? handle? enjoyed very much
@SarahBurnsStudio

Yes for if you want to hold it like a palette instead. It's super light. You can buy a tray for the bottom to cover it, or just make on yourself. However I have never needed to and haven't had any issues.

Beautiful piece Sarah! also that box is very handy looking it's gone on my wishlist! can i ask why you gesso'd with a more neutral tone? it's something I don't remember seeing other people do before (they probably do but I just didn't notice)
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 6 лет назад
the discordant bear Thank you! I prefer a neutral tone to work on - usually grey, blue, or purple. It's just always been my preference. :)

That looks like a pain to have to hold your canvas/board while painting. Is there a clip or something you can add to hold it for you? Great painting though, thanks for posting.
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 6 лет назад
Scott Henderson the reason I have to hold the canvas is because I'm using super thin cardstock oil board. They are loose so I now put cardboard behind them to make it tight which works great. This box is meant to hold two artist panels which are a lot thicker so you normally wouldn't have any issues with it

You use the left side of your brain to talk,.and the right side to do art. When you're in the creative.side, it's hard to hold a conversation and visa versa.

At 10:15, where did you get the GoPro attachment, what is it called, and where did you attach it?

I attached it to the tripod leg. It's a flexible GoPro arm that came in a accessories bundle I bought on Amazon.
