Trying out the 69 grain Sierra hollow point boat tail "Match King" bullet in a Remington 700 5R .223 rifle. The hand load load was fired for accuracy at 500 yards as well as over the chronograph for velocity readings. The objective was to get a load that shoots well out to 500-600 yards from the 1-9" twist barrel.

I wouldn't give up on the Hornady 68's. I have a Model 70HV that absolutely loves them with IMR 8208XBR. I think with a little experimentation that Remington will love them too.

Excellent shooting. Im shooting win 748 with nosler 69 grain hpbt thru my cz .223 527 mtr. I just started reloading bottleneck. My 25.5gr. group at 100 yards if blown up to 500 yards might exactly match your first group. Great video, from a very good shooter.

The powder charges in these loads was dropped with a Lyman 55 powder measure, a great thing about 748 (and other ball powders) is that it measures so consistently, makes for easy reloading.

Nice shooting! I bought Remington 700 R5 in 223 Rem. (24" fluted barrel) a few years ago, Bud's had them on sale so I grabbed it. My came with in a B&C M40 stock and has a black Cerakote finished action and barrel. I put a Leupold VARI-X III 4.5-14X50MM Scope on it. I don't reload so the best ammo so far has been Federal Gold Metal with 69 gr. Sierra Matchkings. I'm getting about 1" at 100 yards. I've haven't tried anything heavier. I shoot Hornady Superformance Match 75 gr. BTHP's in my Mk12. I'll try them in my R5 to see how they shoot.

Sierra MK 69gr. is all I reload with and I tried everything. Keep my powder loads between 2700 & 2800 fps All I shoot is 200 yds. and I average 1.75" groups all day long.

Very nice groups. You seem to be a fan of the Remington 700 5R. I'm not normally into modern rifles but this seems to be very accurate. What other features do you like about this rifle compared to other modern American bolt actions like Savages 11 and Rugers 77?
@314299
@314299 8 лет назад
I do like the Remington 700 5R rifles, they are quite accurate if fed the proper ammunition, and the 5R profile barrel seems to foul less than other types. The 5R rifles are "good to go" out of the box after you add a scope & mounts. I like the low maintenance of the stainless steel and the rifle comes with an excellent stock made by HS Precision. There is some room for improvement, mostly in the X-Mark Pro trigger which is usable but not ideal as it can not be adjusted down far enough. To compare it to the Savage and Ruger offerings would take more experience with their products than I have.

+314299 Shooting Channel Thank you much. I've been considering buying a more modern rifle with a scope, most likely in .308. I'll have to give some Remington's a closer look.

Try 75 Hornadies, better then the 77 SMK's bc wise. Load would be 24 gn Varget or RL 15. Amazing accuracy w/ those. I gave up on the 69 smk's this year after I tried the Heavier SMK w/ success and the 75 Hornadys w/ even more success. Clays at 600 yards very consistently get hit w/ the Hornady 75's.
@Shooter7point62
@Shooter7point62 8 лет назад
i concur. If the 5R is a true 1x9 twist it should stabilize the 75 hornady which is a fundamemtally better bullet beyond 200 yards.

I have a custom barrel and out of 4 different bullets the Hornady 68gr. performs the worse just like yours and mine is a custom 22" barrel and is .960 in dia. with a tuner/brake on the end so you can't blame it on harmonics. .

@@314299 I shoot Sierra 69 all the time plus the Lepua 69 and they both shoot very well .7 to .6 MOA on average after about 200 rds. each. I will look into Barnes soon. I have friends that love the Hornady but they shoot semi-auto AR-15 style rifles so maybe that's the difference ?

Where did you get the 223 "5R" rifle in Remington 700? Is there any custom work? Have you tried the OCW or the ladder test on your loads
@314299
@314299 7 лет назад
I had a local dealer order the rifle in from the distributor. These rifle are not a custom item but are a "non catalogue" item, Remington makes batches of them every now and then. I have tried the OCW test method but it has been inconclusive, mostly as it is difficult to get a day where the wind is cooperative where one could shoot at a sufficient distance to get usable results.

Try the 75gr Hornady bthp match, they work great in my 5r 223, going to try the 75gr eld match soon and see what they will do, everyone said the 75gr match wouldn't stabilize but they shoot fine in mine out to 1000 yards.

@jamesstewart9970 7 лет назад
314299 Shooting Channel Actually I was just shooting the factory loaded Hornady 75gr match ammo but plan on reloading the 75gr eld into the cases I have. I was getting 2820avg with the factory stuff and wasn't having any problems hitting a 10" steel disc at 1000. The eld should give it the ability to get out to about 1200 or so but I have a feeling they would both remain stable and accurate after they fell subsonic. The eld will be loaded much longer than the standard max oal of 2.250, I plan on stretching them out to probably 2.500" because I installed a ptg bottom metal that works with aics style mags and they will still mag feed at 2.500, this will also provide much more internal capacity for powder so the speeds should be in the 2900+ range with varget without pressure issues.

Would you mind making a very short video showing the barrel markings on your 5r? mine are very different than other previous markings, and I don't get why
@jamesstewart9970
@jamesstewart9970 7 лет назад
L33tmaster15, Remington changed the roll marks on the barrels from the earlier models. If I remember right the early ones didn't even have anything that actually identified them as a 5r milspec on the barrel, the later models have 5r milspec 223, 308, 300 win mag, and now 6.5 creedmoor. The first one I owned was a 308 and it had nothing identifying it aside from the box it came in. A friend of mine purchased the early 223 when they first came out that had no markings identifying what it was and I purchased one myself a while after him that actually states what it is on the barrel. They both shoot great and they both actually have an exact 1:9 twist rate measured with a cleaning rod and patch. Long story short, don't sweat the roll marks, it should shoot just fine even with the 75gr stuff.
@L33tmaster15
@L33tmaster15 7 лет назад
Alright thanks. Still curious because I suppose they changed the font of the barrel markings. When did you get your 5r? I have the .223 5r also. I haven't yet shot it because the scope is on the way. How does yours shoot and what factory ammo have you tried that it likes? Sorry for the questions!

Accuracy with MFS ammo is rather poor in my experience, regardless of the caliber and the rifle it is fired in. The only way to find out what ammo shoots well in your rifle is to try a variety of different brands in it. If you want high precision you generally will not get it from "budget" ammo, high quality projectiles cost more money. Hand-loading is the best way to get good ammo for a decent price.

@314299
@314299 8 лет назад
I have never had a speck of rust on my stainless steel 700's, and polished blue finish 700's are not inclined to rust if given reasonable care. The matte blued 700 rifles appear to have been sandblasted and then hot blued, and they will rust a lot more easily due to the rough nature of the finish. If I had a matte blued 700 and I were concerned with the possibility of corrosion I would be tempted to use one of the gun paints like DuraCoat on it.

Fine, but you need a bullet for varmints too and perhaps coyotes etc. From 500 yards, match bullets may not anchor larger varmints.

I have no plans for shooting coyotes from that far back. Realistically in the terrain where I live I would not get a shot at one past 300.
